Great trail. Mild up and down slopes. There was a great balance of sun and shade. I can't comment on the views. Far off forest fires had created an incredible amount of smoke.

There are 3 trails from the parking lot on the side of the highway. We intended to hike only 3.5 miles on a different trail with an older dog so turned around at about the halfway point on this trail. Beautiful wildflowers, caterpillars and chrysalis made the hike fun. Moderate hills.

Checked out this trail and did an overnight on 4 July. The trail itself is very good. Well marked and easy to navigate with a few uphill moments that’ll get you sweating. Not many viewpoints, but the trail fully immerses you in Tahoe National Forest and there are three meadows with tons of flowers. My issue was the end state at the lake. The campsite is free and pretty small so it fills up quickly. They also have fire pits and bear canisters so that’s nice. But the campsite is also accessible by car, meaning that over holidays and long weekends it becomes a party. There’s also an off-roading trail that goes through the campsite so expect to see lots of trucks and jeeps kicking up dust. There is also a strange amount of traffic that comes in and out of the site throughout the night. And overall it was a pretty dirty campsite, with cigarette butts and dog crap all over. If that’s your jam, then party on Garth. But if you’re like me and want some solitude after a long day on the trail, check out other lakes like Aloha, Echo, Clyde and Paradise.

Paved the whole way, easy hike assessable for all ages and abilities.

Obstructed views of the lake at several points. Signage could be better along the way.

Paved meandering trail. Great for a quick run when you don't have time for a long approach to the trailhead.

Good hike in snowshoes. Went in April 2017. Lots of snowmobiles around but they stuck to their trails for the most part. Diesel smell wasn't the best... Lots of snow when we went so it was beautiful but it was hard to get a view through the trees. Did this hike due to low avalanche risk compared to nearby hikes.

There was a fee for parking so we didn't do this hike. Back toward the lake, on National, there was another trail the Tall Trees loop, which we explored instead. Easy to find, looks like hikers and mountain bikers use it. Through (wait for it) tall trees. There were lots of side trails though, so not sure we did the whole thing. My rating is for this trail.
