Hiking

Summer isn’t the best time of year for this trail. The hillsides are brown and parched and there is a little shade throughout., with only a few lovely oak groves providing welcome shade. There were still a few shrubs that had flowers and berries that also provided some interest. Otherwise this was a hot hike mostly on a fire road. The Doc Larsen trail through the canyon is about 1.7 miles of the entire hike.

Awesome trail. Excellent workout. No shade, so start early and bring plenty of hydration. Views are awesome and loved all the flowers.

As folks has said, it is a paved fire road the whole way, but with plenty of dirt in places - not a clean blacktop if that's what you are thinking. Being a fire road, it is plenty wide the whole way, can easily maintain your distance with other people. I found after the first big overlook (about 1.5mi up) there were a lot fewer people. Four stars for phenomenal views out over the San Fernando basin most of the way, and attractive road cuts around deep, steep canyons as the road wends its way westward across the face of the San Gabriels. There is little to no shade tho, and the road is very exposed, so not great for a hot day.

First I do the dirt path then I take the black top to the bench and come back down through the black top. 5.7 miles 2 hrs 25 min.

in all fairness i’m a totally beginner when it comes to hiking but this trail was super overgrown and i kept getting whacked by plants and whatnot. Definitely don’t do this trail if you don’t have experience because the first mile and a half are super elevated but after doing the hard part it was fairly fun.

Starts off a little sketchy but gets pretty as you get further!! Got cat called by some random creepy dude sitting alone in the shade right when we started the trail, I was glad I wasn’t alone. Not a lot of shade and only saw 2 other people, so wouldn’t recommend taking a dog or going by yourself if you’re a young female

Nice steady incline but not too bad, can keep going past 2 miles if you want. Saw a snake today, be careful

We had a great time. The weather cool, yet bright. The wildflowers were abundant. The insects were out doing their thing. Our first time out on this trail last weekend and totally worth it. We sat by the spring/brook and had lunch among the wildlife. We saw few hikers at the time we started. It seems that many began their hike a bit earlier than us. Folks were cheery and polite. We made it back to the fire road, then decided to head back for lunch. We'll be back.
