Hike was very snowy at this time of year making it harder to find of course, but there are markers and signs. It leads to a frozen lake which I walked across, so it’s fine to walk on.

Hiked / snowshoed on 2/9/20 up to Castle Peak, out to Peter Grubb hut, and out and around Andesite to get back. The trail to Peter Grubb is actually so thoroughly tracked that it's easier to just hike it--no shoeshoes / skis needed.

Easy to follow snowmobile path and snow was packed enough we didn't need our snowshoes. Made it to just below the peak because we didn't want to scramble up in the softer snow and didn't know the best route to the top. Still beautiful views and nice winter hike.

We attempted a Summit of Castle Peak but with only snowshoes we deemed it not safe to continue. Crampons, Ice Axe and Helmet are necessary for winter hiking.

Views were amazing, lots of flat to get through before the ascending starts though.

Ski toured up to the saddle of castle peak. Snow conditions were great, thanks to the storm 2 days ago. Conditions called for wind slab on north type facing slopes and storm slab everywhere but southeast to southwest. We stuck mostly to south facing slopes and had great skiing conditions. Snow was a bit heavy on the south facing slopes and lighter on the north slopes. We didn’t see any evidence of avalanches and our basic tests showed good stability. We kept it to slopes less than 33 degrees. It was pretty warm today and the hike up wasn’t terrible - long sleeve shirt and all vents open.

Not much parking at the trailhead. Water crossing at about the one mile mark was pretty sketchy in snowy conditions

Use Crampons and not snowshoes for this trail in the winter. Lots of people considering the conditions. The hut is awesome ! Moderate with snow shoes. The climb is easy but with snowshoed made it worst than it was. Good for beginners

Beautiful easy trail with moderate traffic - skiers to hikers, some to castle peak and some to the hut. Microspike a must, snowshoes recommended. Husband and I did it with just the spikes while rest of our group used snowshoes. Parking - start early to avoid the crowd, parking is just right after boreal inn, don’t forget to obtain sno permit

Scenic trail! Snowshoes or micro spikes are a must, it gets pretty steep and icy. We made the mistake of parking at the rest area across the freeway by Boreal and crossed the freeway via the PCT tunnel. It was a surprising experience but was a long detour. Wanted to continue up the peak via the castle peak trail but we were running out of daylight. Will definitely do this again.

Was a little worried about the snow conditions today, thanks to the rain storm on Jan 1. We had skied at Alpine Meadows yesterday and snow conditions were icy and slick until the sun heated up the snow in the afternoon. Our worry about icy conditions was unfounded - today’s warm temperatures got the snow soft quickly. Even by 10am the snow was soft, even in the shady parts. We hiked up to castle peak saddle and skied a south-southwest face. Snow was sticky - maybe even too sticky for my preferences. It was a slow hike out through the meadow. Blue skies with a bit of clouds made it a gorgeous day.
