Attempted to go to Frog Lake Overlook via Castle Peak as shown in the AllTrails app. The terrain going up to Castle Peak is very steep with loose rock and slippery footing. Once we got pass Castle Peak there were two cliffs with jagged rocks that needed scaling before reaching the trail you can clearly see on the other side. A group of four attempted it just before us and ended up scrambling to the bottom of the mountain without trail into unknown terrain. The end of my track goes in circles looking for a safe way to cross. We decided to opt out so we could live to hike another day. THE MESSAGE IS: Be aware of all logged routes on AllTrails. They may not be what you think. Do not attempt situations that are beyond your skill. Do your homework and know when to turn around so you can hike another day!
I would have rated this a 5 due to the views but I am rating it a 1 for following this AllTrails route. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy exploring AllTrails, just be aware it might not be what you think and be ready for the unknown!
I am a avid hiker and I would rate this as Hard due to the steep loose rock ups and downs.

Beautiful hike! Went with my small dog in mid August, but wish we would have gone a month or two earlier so that we could have seen more wildflowers. It was still one of the best hikes we have ever done. Plenty of gorgeous trees, granite rocks, lakes and wildflowers to look at. Loved how the first part of the hike was part of the PCT and then went under Highway 80 and the second part of the hike was totally different. The lake at the end is perfect! Highly recommended.

Fun hike! Kind of exposed in some parts but overall very enjoyable.

Nice, well maintained, not too steep, and lots of shade. The lake is great for a cooling dip and there's water in streams along the way.

The lake is beautiful... the hike is not. The last half mile and the walk around the lake is pretty. Hiking on a gravel road is not nice. The bikes have made the trail a mess in places. Lots of road noise

This is a well-shaded hike for much of the way. We took a 5, 7, and 15 year olds, all "experienced" hikers and this took us about 5.5 hours. The part where you loop back around at the top is tough to find the trail. Pay attention to the map. The lake side of the loop isn't very populated, probably because it's so hard to find. Good luck.

This trail was great. Signage was lacking in some spots, so have a reliable GPS on hand (Gaia GPS). Beautiful views and sawmill lake was a great spot to camp. This was my first backpacking trip (day one of three was on this trail) and moderate is accurate in my opinion as someone who cycles/runs/hikes 5/6 days per week. We were on this trail on a Weds and didn’t see a soul. It was amazing!

Beautiful and clear views! The lake was perfect for swimming. Not too many mosquitoes and only one other overnight group.

One of the most beautiful trails I’ve ever been on! We had a little trouble finding the trailhead as well. You have to go down the PCT for a bit and then the trail will take a sharp left and there is a sign.

Great hike with amazing views.

Things to know: Take bug spray. You’ll be happy to have it in the first mile or so, before you get into fast elevation grades. Obviously, you need
water, glasses, and suntan lotion. I don’t like poles, but I’d think most people do.

The hike is 3.0-3.1 miles to the top. After the first 1.5 miles it gets much steeper with incline grades of 30-60 percent. Those don’t relent for almost the entire way to the top. At the top you have to do some very minor rock climbing to get to the top. Amazing views and feeling of accomplishment.

For those who are in very good shape it’s probably not that big of a deal. For the weekend warrior it’s a great workout but it’s not going to be easy, but you can do it!

Also, anyone who takes a 4 year old on this trail is irresponsible in my opinion. It’s way too steep to think taking a small child on the last mile
of this trial is a good idea.

Amazing hike! Starts off fairly mundane...but then steps it up and is very challenging but worth the pay off at the end!

July 8th 2018. 9:00am start. Moderate. This trail had every type of nature person and dog on it. We crossed paths with fishermen, mountain bikers, families, seasoned hikers and first timers.
A portion of the trail is actually a gravel road. It got a bit dusty.
All in all the trail was beautiful. Worth the hike to Lola Lake. I’d absolutely come back with a fishing pole or a bike.

Lovely, moderate to easy hike. We started about 8:30 am and had the trail to ourselves. Wild flowers in bloom. A few mountain bikers and hikers on our way back around 10:30. Beautiful lake is the reward after your 3 miles in. Mosquitoes so make sure to bring your repellent!

Trail starts at Boreal trail head. Signs explain a few features (e.g.erratics). I recommend the left hand turn, clockwise loop so that you circle past the three lakes on the return leg. The crossover trail to Angela lake—I did not find it. At the granite cave shelter at the top of the ridge, that is where you turn right, rather than taking the trail that leads down to Donner pass road. Just head in the direction of Lake Angela. Very pretty wildflowers all over. Lakes are each pretty and good for swimming.

Great hike as advertised. Lots of wild flowers and spectacular views.

I hiked this on 6/30/2018. The trail was great! There weren't many people there when we got to the lake around 1030a, but it did get busy as it got closer to noon. We tried to go to the upper lake but couldn't follow the trail. Fun hike! definitely recommend it.

Easy trail to the base of the mountain, but a bit of a scramble to the summit. Worth it for the views

This hike was awesome. Easy enough for a beginner but with some climbing and challenges. The view 3/4 way up is totally worth it, and right now in June there are wild flowers in bloom and green meadows all over! So beautiful. a fair warning, this trail head was hard for me to find as it's not clearly marked; head towards the PCT; then when you are close to the freeway, just before you reach a sudden meadow of beautiful light green brush on the left, instead of continuing onto the trail as it feels like you're meant to, turn left and hop over the little creek that's there, and you'll see the trail that will take you north under the freeway. It took me three passes to even notice it--albeit I'm a noob, I ended up pretty far south on the PCT before realizing I was walking away from summit lake! Doesn't matter as it's all so beautiful, made a lovely and unexpected 8 mile hike instead! Would love to add the glacier meadow loop next time. Also, if hiking after 4 pm, if you are prone to mosquitos take precautions!! *scritch scritch*

Started at Lindsey Lakes trail, down past Penner and Island Lakes, then back up the Grouse Ridge trail. Mostly downhill the way we went. Nice forest views, rock formations, and wildflowers. Not much water on the trail so make sure you have enough with you. Shotgun Lake was marshy,
filled with lily pads, and smelled like poo. The sign at the connector between Grouse Ridge and Lindsey Lakes trail is wrong. It’s says 1/2 mile, but it’s likely 1 1/2.

Great quick getaway with nice lake and easy access.

Fun and challenging hike! The trailhead is located right off of I-80. Plenty of street parking. I would recommend trekking poles as the downhill descent is steep with loose rocks. Lots of interesting rock formations with spectacular views. Dog friendly!

Lovely trail with our nature lover dog. Wildflowers were in abundance. We had a nice swim as did the dog, with few people around. You can hear a slight bit of highway traffic noise. But considering the proximity, it’s a wonderful spot to hike to. Obviously, lots of options to diverge from this loop.

Fun trail, with gradual incline. Fun to run but in certain parts be careful of rocks / snow. Great views at Castle Rock Peak.

This was a super fun and easy trail! We went early in the morning and it was very chilly at the top, so definitely prepare for that. At the top, you can see two ridge lines; make sure you descent to the correct ridge line it’s easy to get them mixed up! There was a little bit of snow but it was mostly melted.

There was a nice view at the top and there were lots of cool rocks and things to see all the way up. I definitely would recommend this hike! It’s a great trail for if you don’t want to drive all the way to Tahoe but want to do some good hiking!

Hiked 6/20/18 with my 9 & 4 year old. At the bottom mosquitos were out, but disappeared after leaving the road and starting on the trail. Wish I had brought bug spray though. Poles would definitely have helped toward the top! Windy at summit but great views. Took us 4 hours with the kids but without them could have been much faster!

Beautiful hike. There is a little bit of snow left and the wildflowers are still in bloom as you aapproach the summit. Poles may be helpful as you get to the top due to the loose gravel. Super windy at the top of the peak in the mornings; however, the views are amazing!

Climbed on 6/9/18. Trail has decent amount of water running down from the last bit of snow melt. At the second parking area ~1mi in, there’s packed snow on the trail for 1/3-1/2 mi. Pretty much clear to the summit after that.

6/16/18 Got to the trailhead around 8 and there were only a few other cars on a Saturday morning. More by the time we left but not crowded. Still patches of snow on the ground in some parts but nothing major. About 3 hours round trip with a stop at the summit to make coffee and eat a snack. Beautiful hike.
