I was quite pleased with this difficult and steep trail so close to home. Sunday may 31st 2020 and only saw three other families the whole time. Nice breeze near the top. It was still a bit hot for my Dog so it took us 2 hours.

The only good thing about whatever this trail is, is the peak looking out to several cities. Eveything else is infested with dog poop, and flies. It's probably due to all the ugly houses surrounding the area.

Trail is enjoyable...we ran into a beehive by the creek on the backside. There is also private property and no trespassing signs on this trail that have to be ignored. Great view at the top and we did not run into mountain bikers until midway through. Also, nice that we were able to still heat the water running.

Pretty area, better with a couple people than alone. Keep an eye out for snakes, almost stepped in a big rattler!

I enjoyed the waterfall and creek section. There were also some nice viewpoints towards the top, with views of both the lagoon to the west and rolling hills to the east. I only rated the trail 3 stars because the bulk of the miles were less impressive. I particularly disliked rocky hills on the west side of the loop. If I did the hike again, I would choose an alternative, less rocky route down the hill. The Rancho La Costa Habitat area seems to have as many mountain bikers as hikers. There is a tire pump station at the peak. Some of the trails are narrow, which can make both passing bikers and social distancing awkward. We saw a California Kingsnake on the North section, not far from San Elijo Road.

Was open as of yesterday. A lot of people there 5-6pm, around 50% without masks FYI if that matters to you. Love this place.

Just checking... is this trail still open and if so when does the park open/close for hiking?

Fire road for part of it, and I’m not a huge fan of that, but otherwise it’s mainly single track trail slightly over grown but pretty. Takes you to the peak and down to the waterfall and back around. trail is nice and has lots of flowers rn. Enjoy!

We didn’t even do Mule trail, the other trails were just so beautiful! The whole area is a break taking oasis from suburbia.

Be sure to follow the trail map - no signage & lots of different trail off-shoots. At the very top of the loop, in the flat area saw a 4’ rattle snake - dog almost stepped on him & he was pissed. Beautiful views & great exercise - we had a great adventure. Be sure to brings lots of water, especially on warm days.

Quite a workout! Make sure you bring water, even though it’s short, there are some very steep parts.

Great trail! Did this trail on Sunday with my kids ages 6-12. Great little work out and did about 4 miles worth of hiking.

this is a HARD hike! not moderate! crazy hills, both directions of the loop! that sounds like an old grandpa.. "back in my day, we walked uphill to school, both ways"... well, its true! I see that now. the lake & creek were pretty, but it was a brutal hike for any non-expert hikers. I wouldn't recommend for a 'nice day hike'.

Great trail for a low-moderate intensity workout. Trail is in the middle of a residential area however far enough to feel like your “one with nature.” Lots of steep inclines for a great leg workout. Trail is mostly paved so you can also run or ride your bike. Great views; lots of trees and bushes along the trail.

Nice fun trail with kids. There is a homeless guy living on it though and he was like right in the middle of a small trail sitting there. Also if you bring your dogs be responsible and pick up your dogs poop and don’t leave the bags in the trail. That’s lazy being there is garbage cans along the trail.
