Busy parking lot. Nice hike. Good views.

Combines one of my favorite trails anywhere, Split Rock Loop, with an adventure out to the miner’s house. To start, take the right-hand trailhead at Split Rock Loop parking lot as shown in the map here, after a quarter mile or so you’ll see an unmarked trail heading off to the right. That’s the start of this Eagle Mine trail that goes to the cabin, with a steep incline enroute.

During your return trip, once you come back to Split Rock Loop junction, I highly recommend taking a right to complete the 1.6mile portion of the loop that you didn’t see on the way in (counterclockwise). Time it so that you’re passing through this final 60+ minute section of the loop during sunset. The various views, colors, and formations properly lit at this time of day are freaking magic, and you’ll probably have the place to yourself. People always leave before the light show (sunset) begins. This is when Joshua Tree really shines!

Amazing day. Brings lots of water and food.

The summit makes you work for it, but the view is worth the effort. Recommend trekking poles for those of you who suffer from weak knees or lungs, like me.

Awesome hike! Moderately difficult on the way up, easy strolling on the way down. Bring a windbreaker if you can!

Done it 3 times. Once in 105 degree weather
It’s a good trail. Not simple, not too hard.

Awesome experience second time around.

Rock stairs!

This was a fantastic hike! Just under 3 miles, completed btwn 12:30pm and 2pm on Saturday, Nov 3rd. Great views during the entire hike with 360 degree views at the top. Listed as ‘Easy’ on AllTrails, the trail is very clean and well kept, but moderately strenuous for the 1.5 miles to the top. Hope to be able to do again in the future as a run.

Nice, short steep hike. 3.5 stars if there was a half star allowed. Views are the similar throughout the trail. Did see some mountain sheep about half way on the trail.

Short but rewarding hike with panoramic views from the summit. Rather steep on the way up, but manageable for anyone in reasonable shape. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a shorter hike, it took approximately 90 minutes at a leisurely pace with time for photos at the top.

good medium length hike with intense elevation, it will have your legs aching. great 360 degree vista at the top and many beautiful rock formations. we saw lots of bighorn, they were badass. have fun get there early, in Oct we had face full of sunshine 80% of the way

Good hike- start earlier as the sun is intense and the hike is very exposed. Super dry climate so drink a lot of water! Lots is stairs and consistent incline all the way up. Good 360 views from the top.

Oct 15: a perfect day to do this trail. Weather was in the low 70s and we were glad it was. We really enjoyed this hike, including the chance to get away from the masses. Only saw one other family after we left the Split Rock loop.

I’d recommend this trail for anyone wanting a bit of adventure and not afraid to focus a bit on trail finding. Once you get to the mountain and start ascending the loose rock switchbacks, it can be tricky to know you’re on the trail. Look for the stacks of rocks that others have left.

Once you make it to the top, you’re in for a treat. Two mines and the semi preserved ruins of an old house. Really cool! And to top it off, we saw two Bighorn sheep on the top of the rocks by the mines.

Hiking was easy and definitely not difficult unless you have never hiked and don’t do any exercise. The views were spectacular.

Beautiful desert trail - saw the sunset on top. Vivid colors of the sky.

Loved this trail! Although I felt it was a little longer than 1.5 miles each way that could be because it consisted of straight uphill incline for most of the hike. Not shaded, so drink lots of water. Took about 2 hours total. Great 360 degree views of the park from the top of the mountain! Overall a solid hike and great workout.

One of our fave JT hikes — we always do it first thing in the morning because it makes 85% of the ascent shaded, which really makes a difference. It’s a lot of natural “stairs,” and pretty strenuous if it’s in the sun or you aren’t used to serious inclines. But the view at the top, and along the way, is amazing. It gets very windy at the top, so watch your hat. Again, recommend starting by 8:30am, not only for the shade but to watch the shadows change on the landscape as you climb... great photo ops.

breathtaking views. started early and saw no one on the way up. Did start seeing the late risers in the way down. Windy at the top the day we went, so be prepared for that.

Did this trail in July, hot but not insufferable. Well maintained- going up is harder cardiovascularly while going down tougher on legs. Views are great at the top. Highly recommended

A short hike that can get tough due to the temperature. Beginning of June, it was already in excess of 110 degrees during the day, so an early start is definitely recommended here. On the plus side, the trail is to a large extent in the shadow if you hike in the morning, and the 360 view from the top is definitely worth the effort. Just make sure that you carry enough water and wear a hat!

Definitely strenuous. Especially in the summer. Lots of folks turned back because they knew they didn’t have enough water. The view is amazing from the top. Not for the faint of heart.

started at night, trail wasn't really a trail, just a blind walk through wilderness! of course we started the trail late at night

This was a challenging hike! I agree with the Park Rangers that it's strenuous. The full sun and elevation climb make it a tough trail but it's a great workout. The lower valley trails are easier and prettier.

Best hike for the view. Its all uphill, so bring water and a hat, as the whole trail is exposed. Its rated as strenuous in the NP guide, but I think thats too keep the tourists at bay. I can see this being a hike people have to be rescued from....

Short hike, but uphill, but once at the top, you get a beautiful 360 degree view of Joshua tree NP and beyond. Some annoying tourists were at the top flying a drone, which was incredibly annoying so please respect the land and your fellow hikers. The constant buzzing and whipping of drones is incredibly distracting and annoying. Sorry I don't care about the dumb youtube video you are going to make or your instagram likes on a selfie of you. STOP IT. (enough ranting :} ).

A nice hike with lots of views. ..and steps. A moderate hike climbing, but easy climb down , and took only about 2.5 hours round trip including many photos and scenic pauses.

Beautiful 360-degree views await you at the summit! It’s not too difficult of a hike if you have proper footwear, sufficient water and sun protection. Go early in the morning and bring some snacks to enjoy at the top.

A challenging but nice trail. It takes you high up the mountain.
