Very pleasant trail. Nothing too exciting about this trail but I enjoyed the view of the lake that surrounds the Butte. There were lots of people in the lake but no one on the trail. It was kind of confusing where I was supposed to go. You have to walk along the dam road that is paved and then turn right down the hill and then turn on the trail that goes left and cross the riverbed to the other side of the hill that takes you south to the summit.

Trail from overlook to intersection with coyote trail is great. Nice easy little loop if you stay close to the dam. Coyote trail transitioned from open gravel road to heavily overgrown twotrack. Stickers from the tall dead grass were annoying as they filled my socks and shoes and the star thistle growing all over the road was brutal on bare legs. Wish they could have run a mower down this trail. Trail down to the lakeshore was invisible, never did find it. Nice area, great solitude but felt more like a cross country wander after my first couple of miles when the trails disappeared into the tall dense vegetation.

This is mostly a hike around the barren, arid reservoir. We missed the green grass by a week or two, so got the beautiful, but unexpected golden grass. It's going to be scorching hot very soon for this easy hike. It's close to Chico, so hot it will be! Lots of happy birds including osprey, but a this is not an exciting hike. Glad to do it once, but not again. I'd say it would be a fun, easy, short single track on a mountain bike. Bikes allowed. This region would be a great place to cycle with all the rolling golden hills and quite roads.

It was just okay I wouldn’t do it again although the lake is pretty but still not the funnest hike

Had a fun hike up Black Butte today. A little chilly, but it warmed up just enough. Black Butte Lake was shimmering and the view from the top overlooking the lake and nearby mountains was worth it! There’s a map at the beginning of the trail, I’d take a photo. I used mine as a reference a few time since the trail at times can be elusive. I hiked from the observation point, across the paved overlook, down a gravel road and over onto the osprey trail which goes to the top of Black Butte. Most of the trail is over grassy/rocky hills so look for the paths in the grass that have been trodden down. I also used the AllTrails map as reference too making sure my gps matched the recorded trail. The cows in the neighboring field provided some company as you could hear them mooing from a distance. I will definitely be coming back and exploring more of the trail. It’s a nice hidden gem.

Don't do this in the summer. Too hot. Wait until early spring or later in the fall. The view from the top of Eagle Pass at the right time of year is beautiful.

We ride the trails there since years. Easy access from the staging area on the south west side. There are many trails from easy to some steep inclines. Perfect for conditioning of your horse. Stay on the trails, many squirrel holes and rattle snakes!!!
