Spectacular stand of old growth redwoods, one which was completely hollowed out, standing on stilts, still living.

This is the quintessential Northern California trail. It should be required hiking for all new residents. Massive trees, well-groomed and marked trails, tons of yellow-foot mushrooms and ferns. I recommend going in the winter, when it’s lush and verdant, and all the colors are deep and rich. It’s quiet, too. This is a trail I sometimes do with a couple hours of evening time and a full moon. It’s navigable with a good headlamp and maybe a small LED lantern.

beautiful trail

This trail is so interesting! The greenery is stunning and the trail is so fun to walk. Not much of a hike and can be very busy at times, but is well worth it.

Hands down one of the most magical short hikes I’ve been on. The ferns are unreal. I would advise having an all road vehicle due to some water holes on the way in, but we were fine in our Subaru & it was wicked fun. Also, wear water shoes with good traction- your feet will be soaked, but it’s worth it! This hike would be great for small children too!

Beautiful trail, and we didn't see too many other people. There were some trees down across the trail. We turned this into a loop by returning on the foothill trail.

We loved this trail! This trail is on the easy side of moderate, and we really didn't feel the elevation gain. It took us all day, because we hiked slow to enjoy the scenery. The footbridge in Fern Canyon has been removed, but we were able to walk down the canyon in good hiking boots without getting our feet wet. We couldn't walk to the beach however, because the trail were flooded. We saw some elk in Elk Meadow, when we returned to our car.

Absolutely stunning views! If you don’t want too steep of a hike, I’d recommend going to the right at the split and doing the ocean side first and coming back on the forest side. Hidden beach is not too far past the directional loop sign and TOTALLY worth it. Did the loop and spent some time on the beach in about 2 hours.

Beautiful walk among the redwoods. The fern canyon is amazing but you need either waterproof shoes and be very convenient with walking on man made bridges over creeks :) they are not deep but deep enough to get you wet for sure.

Bring waterproof shoes if you plan on hiking through the canyon. The walls were indeed covered in ferns, nothing quite like it!

Beautiful hike through the old growth forest.

This trail is seasonal meaning there is no bridge to pass the creek. We did pass the creek it is not too bad but be mindful of it. Other than that beautiful fall walk.

Had so much fun hiking here. Be prepared to hike for at least 6 hours. Fern Canyon is stunning, worth exploring. Deer everywhere. Saw many type of mushrooms. Beautiful rainforest with the ground feeling so cushiony
