We dropped in from the end of Carlsbad Village Dr. Steep first hundred yards down in (and back out!), but the rest of the trail was moderate/easy. One of the prettier hikes that’s close from north county towns. Great wildflowers after the rains. No shade, so SPF and 2L of water. Hot one for dogs!

I've been to Calavera many times, but never parking on Cannon road and going on the southern loop. The southern trails were generally quiet with little traffic, particularly once getting away from Cannon road. Some of these trails were scenic with flowers blooming and a tree covered creek area. There was also a less interesting portion with gravel and a ~4 foot rattlesnake crossing the trail (near Sage Creek HS). There are many alternative trails, so the AllTrails map is helpful.

Zero signage and several overlapping routes make it easy to get lost.

Just as of note, it’s not dog poop it’s a lot of coyote poop and really looks like dog poop but if you have a dog you’ll notice the difference (seeds, hair, fresh piles) and I saw coyotes everywhere in the middle of the day. Didn’t bother me, they were just watching-like hey. What food you got? The bagged poop however lol can’t speak on that. That’s probs the wolves bc they’re super smart ;) probs bag their own poo and leave it

Great hike when it’s green and full of flowers

Similar to other reviews, I found this trail to be poop infested. It seems that dog owners let their dogs crap directly on the trail and just walk away. I also saw some filled poop bags by the side of the trail. I guess these people think the rest of us will pick up after them. Really disgusting. The trail itself isn’t very inspiring because you don’t ever feel like you are in the woods with the tarred trails, airplane noise, and background motor noise. Sorry, only 1 star for this one.

Fantastic out and back trail...

I love this place. Easy to get to, and easy to forget you are in the middle of Vista.

Great trail. Different trails to try out. Definitely will try again but be aware with parking at the park. It's very limited.

Not really a trail but the pier is quite long and the walk along the strand perpendicular to the pier is quite nice. Downtown Oceanside has cleaned up nicely over the past decade into something quite beautiful, crowded, vibrant, and fun.

More of a beach spot than a hike, didnt do the whole trail! The beach was beautiful so we had to stop! Trail and hill to get to it but a perfect spot to soak up some sun and get the dogs in the water! Would recommend! Need a park pass or pay for parking! Also have bathrooms and charcoal grills and tables to use! Could spend the whole day here

With all the rain some parts of the loop are extremely muddy. Still, a splendid time being outdoors. At least for now, water, water everywhere! Used the trail sides when outright mud-sludge. Despite this, one of the areas best bets.

I only walked about 2.5 miles and turned around but the starting point is not very well marked. It’s super bike friendly but not exactly walking friendly at first. I will try staring from the other end next time.

I love the hike there was many roads to take. The weather was perfect yesterday.

We started in the church parking lot - highly recommended if you’re looking for a more quiet hike. Decently tough in some areas. Depending on which trails you take, it’s easy to make it as difficult or easy as you want. Trails in the app are very accurate. Saw a coyote in the middle of the day, so be sure to keep your dogs close.

Tried this for a trail run - super pretty. I’d give more stars for the park but this trail isn’t the greatest - trails up and down the mountain were hard to follow and the view was the lamest part. Next time I’ll just go my own way!

It was shorter than I had hoped it was really easy or very technical

This is a small trail that is linked the roadways entry’s back of a complex close to Mesa front it’s close to Oceanside Blvd, nothing to crazy to see nice simple trail

hard to find actual entrance, but cool views. the entrance is behind the church. theres a side parking lot at the end of cannon road when one can park.

Be sure to keep the app with you to stay on loop

Trails are well kept and found some very clean bathrooms at the park. Large variety of plants and the streams and ponds were cool. Saw two COYOTES on the trail. They looked scared and went on their way. Will be back!

Dog poop everywhere. What is it about dog owners who think they aren’t responsible for picking up after their pets. Disgusting.

Nicely paved trail for a direct pedestrian/bike route to the harbor, avoiding all automobile traffic until you get to the coast. Great for avoiding oblivious drivers and not having to deal with the nightmare of parking near the beach. Safe environment filled with walkers, runners, cyclists, families, dogs and their humans.

beautiful walk

It’s like on the main trail lacks view of the lake. Paths not well marked.

Views are awesome and what’s best is there aren’t a lot of people. Watch out for the edges as some areas are steep! Perfect place to come if you’re looking for solitude or the perfect selfie.
