Explore the most popular paved trails near Oakland with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

Flat route with steady incline leading up to Treasure Island, and a slight decline coming back. Too close to highway and cars for me.

if you like car exhaust and noise, sandy wind on face and pavement, this is for you.

Some parts of the trail are better kept than others , also some areas don’t have any benches to rest on . In general pleasant trail to walk on , mostly flat .

An easy paved trail through a canyon in the middle of Piedmont. There is a beautiful stream with a half dozen little waterfalls through it. It is also an off-leash area for dogs. It's especially nice for that since there's not much poison oak in this park (which is common to this area). Strollers and bikes aren't a good choice with all the steep stairs. The park above is beautiful and manicured, but the canyon trail is left more natural and is entirely covered from direct light by huge trees. Great for a quick scenic walk.

Some of the most beautiful views of the city of Oakland and beyond to even Berkeley and San Francisco are to be had on this unconventional series of winding paths through Mountain View Cemetery. Situated on a series of moderately steep hills, there are beautiful oak trees set among the tombstones. Far from being mundane though, this cemetery has remarkable marble statues and obelisks and immense tombs. It is breathtaking and an easy place to revisit. In fact, it is a fairly popular picnic area for locals. Dogs are kindly allowed in this public cemetery, but only on good behavior which includes NOT urinating on the headstones. Obviously. They ask that you keep to the sometimes broken and winding paths rather that tread on the actual grave sites. Once again, obviously. The roadways offer an easy alternative since cars are not too regular and the speed limit is very low.

Great urban/nature walk.

Iconic mandatory walk or run while in Oakland. Just watch your step here and there for geese poop.

Not a lot of people is a +!
Lots of trash is a - !
View and birding is pretty good.
Hard to get past the smells of trash and dog waste.

Walking the dog here. Not planning on coming again.

great place to see local native water birds, a lot of geese, and members of the community coming together. Great for a jog, scenic stroll, or watching a drum circle form.

Almost perfectly designed for runners 5k. Flat with very low rolling sidewalks. Beautiful especially when the grass is green, the water is high, around sunset. Safe, community space, active but generally not crowded, well lit 2/3 of the path at night. Urban.

NOT SAFE - I WAS ROBBED AT GUNPOINT AND ASSAULTED HERE IN 2018. This is not a joke - I went on a 1hr walk/hike here based on the reviews on AllTrails because I was looking for a new place to walk by the water. I was robbed at gunpoint and sexually assaulted, during the daytime, in the parking lot where other cars were present. If it could happen to me, it could happen to anyone here. The east bay regional park police have been wonderful and are investigating my case very seriously. In talking to a police officer after the incident, they told me that this park is not safe and criminal activity here is common. I am lucky I was not shot. Please be very careful and choose a different place to walk. Also, be careful in the Oakland City parks area in general - when possible choose parks outside of Oakland city.

There should be a ‘jogging’ category ‘cause that’s what this trail is. There are lots of migratory birds on the lake. Great slice of life view of Oakland.

A local running and walking site great for first dates and casual coffee dates with friends. There is a bird sanctuary, a rowing club, outdoor amphitheatre overlooking the lake, bathrooms, water fountains, a restaurant, and more. Great people watching!
