Nice views, totally open, first 1.4 is single track uphill then the rest is a fire road back to the campground.

Carrizo Plain National Monument (Selby Campground Loop Trail) reviews made here were not that useful in completing my hike yesterday. I carried enough water for the 4.6 mile trek. Insects were not a problem like they were in summer. I started out early AM from the parking area, it was cool but not too bad. Biggest problem was the gun fire, which I quickly learned the hills around me were filled with quail hunters. Not great. In some spots on this trail, there were great views of the valley and dry lake bed.
The first mile and a half was all uphill on trail, then at the crest the trail became a road all the way around to the parking area. Not what I am used to.
A Virtual Treadmill video of this hike can be seen on my YouTube Channel, copy and paste link below to watch it. Thanks.

Beautiful, short loop with scenic views of the surrounding canyons. We had a dog with us and it was great for her. It’s mostly single track with some steep downhill exposures. Some points are rocky but for the most part it’s smooth and well maintained. We did it clockwise. Towards the end of the loop, the trail becomes grassy two-track. Bees and butterflies everywhere right now. Watch for snakes, and horse traffic (and poop).

Gorgeous and scenic, this hike is located a few miles inland and starts out relatively moderate temperature-wise, but quickly turns hot as you enter the canyon — bring lots of water. Lots of wild flowers and expansive views, if you’re into photography it’s worthwhile to bring a camera. Enjoy this hike, it’s a beauty and not too strenuous at all.

4-21-18, Another CaCoHP for San Luis Obispo County, at 5,106 feet. Great spring day with flowers, but nowhere near as many in a super Bloom that can happen in the Carrizo Plain. After driving the narrow dirt road up from near Selby campground, I parked at the trailhead. I biked in about 5 miles and stashed the bike and hiked the rest of the way. Great views along the ridge of Carrizo, Soda lake, the San Andreas fault, all lead to a very interesting trip. Summitting was easy, and return trip was just as enjoyable. I was the only one on the trail, granting for reflection of solitude.

Beautiful trail! Still great wildflowers on the 'Loop' side of the trail - so turning right at the beginning of the loop instead of going straight. But the whole loop was gorgeous! Part of the trail was washed out but easy enough to scramble around.

The loop is nice, but do it early morning or afternoon. Do not do this in the summer or mid day - you will regret it since there's little to no shade.

Moderately challenging hike. Great morning or evening prior to high sun. Beautiful! Dog friendly!

Hiking lower elevations on California trails in June is not the optimum time, choose Spring or Fall. The Aliso Creek runs through the canyon but this time it was completely dry. If there was water, there would be several opportunities to cross the stream to continue the hike.

My first hike in the area. Beautiful vistas, spring flowers, and a few challenges. Perfect loop for beginners or those that have a time limit.

Nice sunny day. Easy hike to take young ones one. Not to hard. Then reward them with the water hole that you view at the top of the summit
