This is one of the prettiest summer hikes in the area! The wild flowers were amazing! It was moderate but still felt longer than I anticipated. Lots of traffic on this trail.

From the Woodchuck trailhead it’s a steady up hill climb to the top and the views are spectacular. From the top of the ridge to Wheeler Lake it’s a tough downhill at the top starting with switch backs on loose stones than a semi steep grade for maybe 200 yards through the forest. Then it mellows out still downhill with a box canyon on the right. The trail eventually comes to some boulders and roots to climb down than it an easy hike to the lake. You’ll hear the bells ringing which are the range cows, I’ve never had any problems with them but someone told me they chased him one time.

I've done this hike many times and never tire of it. I did it with my sons yesterday. We started at 10:50 am., and by that time the main parking lot was full, so I recommend getting there early if you can.

The wildflower display is fantastic right now. It probably will be great through the end of July and will start to fade after that. I've done this hike many times from June through October; it's always a good hike but it's extra special when you go during peak wildflower season.

Winnemucca Lake is a nice lunch spot because it's a beautiful lake with a spectacular mountain background. If you are up for more of a hike, going the extra mile to Round Top Lake is worth it. We pushed on to Round Top Peak, which affords great views all around, but it's a great hike even if you skip the mountain peak.

Just got back from a great hike to Winnemucca. The wildflowers are out of control, between the flowers, the views, the lake, it was absolutely beautiful! We got there around 7:45 and found parking easily, took about an hour to get to the lake, hung out for a while and it was practically desolate, just a few people around the lake fishing. When we hiked back we encountered lots of folks, so I highly recommend getting an early start if you don’t want too much “traffic”. Loved this hike!

Wildflowers are beautiful right now. I just posted the video I took from my hike if you are interested in seeing trail conditions. https://youtu.be/nfQ-1Xb2GzI

Oh...I recommend starting your hike EARLY! There were hordes of people heading up on my way back. The trail was packed!

7월초, 8,000피트 이상의 산길에 올라서면 꽃향기에 취해 걸을 수 있어 좋다^^
Deadwood peak, 그 위에 올라서면 Round top, 4th of July lake, Blue lake etc the area of south lake Tahoe의 아름다움과 산세의 웅장함을 모두 느낄 수 있으리라.
It's one of the best hiking!

One of my favorite hikes for variety, wildflowers and vista. Moderate difficulty and a gorgeous lake at the end.

Breathtaking. Words can't describe just how beautiful it is. The vistas and the wildflowers were absolutely spectacular. I went on July 4th and there was a fair amount of trail traffic out to the lake. I decided to go on up to Round Top and made a loop of it, coming down Pack Trail to the Woods Lake campgrounds, and then took the access road back to Rte 88 and the trail head. Hike ended up being about 10 miles and after Round Top, there was much less trail traffic. The dogs and I both loved it, and there were pretty much non-stop photo opportunities. I get it why people can get so addicted to the high country!

Great Route with all the climbing up front. A bit windy up top and lots of smoke from Northern California fires. Lost the trail a few times on the way up and definitely lost it on the way down as it ended at a rocky area, Just needed to climb down the rocks to see the trail start up again. Saw one Marmot on the way down and only 3 humans near the Pass parking lot.

The most beautiful flowers variety I have seen.

Cute cows chilling near duck lake. Thank you! to the astute hikers who blazed the trail with stacked rocks for the latter part of duck lake as the trail was a bit tricky to discern at times. Also appreciated the logs to cross the creek from the meadow back into the woods.

Beautiful trail and it is a great time to hike this trail (6/30) as spring flowers are in full bloom. Trail is almost clear of snow to Fourth of July Lake, only a couple of patches to cross. Great trail, can get hot so bring lots of water or a filter.

Trail report: very little snow. Avoidable. Small patches of mud. Basically Perfect right now. Go get it

Spectacular hike. Among my favorites in the area. We added Round Top Lake and a walk around Frog Lake. Trail is currently clear of snow. Plenty of wildflowers. Just beautiful.

Awesome hike. View is breathtaking, depending on the time there is most likely snow on the trail and multiple lakes.

Great hike, look for rock formations if you’re questioning the route.

The 4x4 road to Meadow Lake was closed off so we didn’t get to try it out. The other trail has big boulders in the path. Definitely need a lift for proper clearance. Beautiful area though! Lots of families fishing and swimming. Looks like tons of fun for that!

Awesome hike, be prepared though...its pretty difficult at times, very steap and rocky. Gorgeous scenery with several lakes.

Made to 10,000 feet. So proud.

Beautiful hike out to Wheeler Lake this weekend. The trail gets lost under a snow at the ridge, but after that it's pretty clear and navigable down to Wheeler Lake, though streams run down it pretty frequently as the snow melts. I lost the trail on my way out thinking I had to stay on the ridge longer, but you really just crest it, wrap around the Mokelumne-side of a small hill, and descend. Lake was beautiful and quiet, and the pup loved the hike too. Plenty of water from streams the whole trek.

Us and our 2 teens walked in easily finding the trails to the gorgeous lake in 2 hours. I back packed here 20 years ago several times and it was amazing on the east/south shore. Beware of losing the trail as you cross streams and never go on a holiday; 20+ years ago on a Memorial Day or 4th of July weekend we found 30+ campers all around the lake blasting stereos and almost no room !!!!!

Beautiful hike! 10 miles in about 4 hours plus lunch at the lake.

This was a great hike. There was about 3 miles of icey snow. This added huge difficulty to the trail. It also added almost 2 hours to the hike. Other than this it was a great day.

2.3 miles to the summit - pretty steep at the end, take your time. Stunning views, perfect place for lunch at the summit in the little rock circle. Tons of snow fields on the way up - thought we were done with that, but tons of snow after as well, except not flat and a bit treacherous. Thankfully others had gone before us and left footprints. We got pretty severely off trail due to the amount of snow - would’ve ranked it a 5 if it weren’t for the snow and ice and we’d been able to stay on trail. Seriously beautiful though, not one to miss!

Did this hike yesterday (5/28). There is still a LOT of snow so be prepared. We made it to Frog Lake following some stick arrows, rock piles, and footsteps in the snow. We made it to Winnemucca Lake following snow foot prints. We attempted to make it to Round Top Lake but ended up at Woods Lake on accident (we saw a lake in the distance and headed for it). I highly recommend snow shoes or gaiters for your hiking boots. It is a tough trek with the snow but SO BEAUTIFUL. We look forward to coming back in the fall when the snow is gone and actually completing the hike.

9 long miles uphill from where we parked. Gorgeous views the whole way. Very tough ascent right at the end. Gets pretty cold there at night with a light wind. Some ice on the ground mid summer. Come for the incredible views and few people.

There were three streams for pumping water, so we did not need to pump the lake. Two streams early in the trail, and one close to the base of the lake.

There is one section of the trail that felt a little dicey - quite narrow with a steep dropoff, with some looser soil than I would have preferred.

This is beautiful with wild flower meadows. Raymond lake is stunning. Is a great hike with dogs, and depending on the year there is no shortage of water along the trail.

beautiful hike. can have ice chutes on several parts of the trail into early summer.

Enjoyed a great snowshoe hike to Lake Winnemucca today. Trail well packed and lake covered in snow, it was beautiful!

Great snowshoe to Winnemucca today.

Important Note—You need to purchase a Sno-Park pass AT A STORE if you are hiking this trail in the winter. There is no option to purchase the $5 pass at the trailhead in the winter!

Also, when you reach a trail junction with an option to head to Woods Lake go this way!

We definitely needed our snowshoes today!
