Convict Lake is a photographer's paradise. The view of the lake, the aspen trees and mountains is phenomenal. The back story on how it got its name is entertaining as well.

It's a short hike to a fantastic small lake area that is surrounded with sand and forest. A great picnic spot.

Stay to the left bordering Lake Mary, my husband and I veared off to the right and got off trail. Its a beautiful view of lake Mary as you ascend and at the top Crystal lake is beautiful.

Easy scenic hike. Upper end of lake nice with Aspen groves and rocky beaches.

Just finished this trail at 5:43pm on 10/12/19. Just starting to get dark. Beautiful trail with a variety of manzanita, rocks, pine trees, aspen, cottonwood and willows. etc. Went to see the fall colors. Beautiful golden aspens around the lake. We will do this again. God created another masterpiece here.

Beautiful trail and the fall colors are coming out. We camped ¾ of the way up and it was all good. There’s a campsite at both valentine and sherwin lakes so it’s pretty easy to find a place to put up for the night. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is cause my watch recorded 10.4mi round trip.

This is one of the most beautiful fall hikes we’ve encountered. This is our second time out and it didn’t disappoint. The beginning of the hike is across a meadow about a mile into the canyon. The trees get even more beautiful once you get inside Canyon. You’ve got to cross the creek which appears to be washed out but it’s not. There are two crossings: one made of trees which is easier to climb out of, and one with a bridge which is difficult to crawl out of but easier to cross back. The next section is beautiful, you’ll pass what looks Like is used to be a lake but now is an amazing display of beaver dams. Finally you’ll reach another creek crossing with easy bridge. This is a good stopping point around 3.5-4 miles. Or, you climb up a steep set of switchbacks another 1-1.5 miles to a beautiful serene mountain lake. I made the trek last year but got altitude sickness and decided not to this year. It’s about 10,000 feet elevation. Well worth it if you’re fit.

Fantastic views and great exercise for something that’s so accessible and short.

Beautiful trail! Easy walk around the lake with spots to fish. We caught some trout on our way along the trail. It’s a flat trail for the most part and awesome views of the falls colors with all the aspen trees.

The trails have some shading, but it gets warm when the sun is out. Beautiful waterfall to reward your hike.

this was an amazing hike! the views are phenomenal but the climb is strenuous if your not used to the elevation.

Breathtaking, but DIFFICULT! if you have a 4x4 drive the first 2.5 miles. It makes all the difference.

Great 2+ mile hike around Convict Lake which is so easy to get to. We were just there last weekend (early Oct) and got to experience great weather and beautiful foliage. It is easy for a family and we also were able to take our 4 month old puppy at well. Lots of people fishing but trails we're not so crowded. This is a great way to introduce yourself to an Alpine lake hike in the Mammoth area. Soo beautiful and will definitely do again.

Beautiful Trail! We hiked this on 10/10/19. The views keep getting better as you go up. Our main destination was Duck Lake but there are several other beautiful lakes along the way as well. The last pass before you get to Duck lake is the most rocky and the steepest. It’s well paved though so you should be fine. Just have good boots and stay hydrated.

Most of the trail is through pine forest, nice for sure, but nothing too extraordinary. Some waterfalls and cascades along the way, which are cool. For me, this trek was all about the destination. Minaret Lake is next level. Seeing the sunrise was a soul shaking and deeply inspirational experience. Would have loved to just spend all day there but had to turn back. The second half of the trail (closer to the lake) is VERY rocky

Nice, well-maintained trail with beautiful views of Lake George and Lake Mary on the way up to Crystal Lake. The mountain views are also beautiful. Not too steep and not too long. Took us about 1 1/2 hours to go up and down and walk around the lake a little bit. We hiked in the afternoon, so it was getting a bit chilly on the way down.

Oct 9, 2019. Aspens, birch, cottonwood are in full color, absolutely beautiful. The trails on AllTrails aren’t in the exact correct spot. One bridge/trail pretty badly washed out. Otherwise a perfect hike. No bugs, very few people too.

Beautiful and easy hike for the entire family. A nice amount of shade along the way and opportunities to stop and enjoy the lake and fall colors.

It is a wonderful trail, but I suggest to walking a little bit more. Lower Rainbow Falls is very interesting and it is just 2 kilometer longer. A lot of squirrels and chipmunks. The nature is perfect.

Ok! So I did this trail (Oct 4 & hiked back out Oct 6) last weekend, here are some pointers: this route is probably the easiest way to reach 1000 Islands, during this time of year it is COVERED in butterflies, the hike in/out is STUNNING with sweeping views of the mountain ranges, there is no shuttle from Mammoth Ski Resort this time of year so you just park at the Agnews Meadows trailhead (after a $10 car fee). Just continue to follow the trail markers for the PCT and 1000 Island Lake. Super dog friendly hike, didn’t have any issues. TOTALLY RECOMMEND! P/s VERY cold at night during this time of year (hit 19 degrees the first night). And yes, permit needed. Got mine from the Ranger Station in Mammoth Welcome Center.

First of all we would rate this closer to hard than moderate. Although only 3 miles to the top it is STEEP almost the entire way. That said it is a wonderful trail and is perfect at this time of year. Amazing views the whole way.

Short hike to get to an amazing lake. Our first hike after a series of health issues, so the the uphill was a little challenging for us, but so worth the effort! Our dog loved playing in the lake.
