Been to Laurel Lake 44 times! Always 4x4! (mine is a Jeep TJ standard) Talk to a Forest Ranger in Mammoth Lakes--Sometimes they have new updates on trail. Arrive at trail beginning "early" say sunrise up to 11:00 a.m. Then enjoy the drive and peninsula on lake. Peninsula is highest place to legally have a campfire! Wonderful fly fishing here! 7 wonderful hikes around & above lake. When driving back down never, ever leave till 2:00 p.m. ! ! WHY? Road is narrow...just a bit winder than your vehicle! No head on meeting! Very difficult to dive backwards with steep drop offs. Only 2 areas to pass each other and far apart. My Activity: 4x4, fishing, photography, hiking, walking.
Best months to go up: no snow. Saturday can be to crowded---new visitors unaware of narrow road!

I picked up the trail at the welcome center and went through the vacant campground - the trail is not marked well at all. I turned around and went back.
Eh.

the first mile is pretty much uphill on soft drift/sand. it starts of at low elevation and as you climb you get higher and higher. I only made it 1.53 miles in and had to turn around to meet a friend in town. but the last half mile made the first mile worth it!! some ice and snow on the ground. so watch your step.

Did this trail on a 2005 KTM EXC 450 and had my brother in law with his built up Jeep LJ. For carbed bikes, I highly recomment adjusting your jet. I went down to a 168 but I feel i should have gone down to a 160 since i had the fuel screw turned in heavily. She was definitely gasping for air. For vehicles, I recommend pressuring down and having an air compressor ready. Make sure your tires have a good side wall, the rocks were pretty sharp and plentiful. Didn't catch anything here, but the lake was gorgeous with some snow in the distance.

Amazing time and breath taking views. Some tough moments with the jeep, especially the last turn. I saw a ton of razrs up there crushing it. Overall the end results is awesome. Water was sub zero.

A really wonderful hike with great selection of different scenery. I took a small side ridge to get a view of the flowers in bloom. Definitely worthwhile. Left early to avoid crowds .. and allowed to take my dog off leash

stock 2015 Toyota 4Runner Trail: take it slow and you'll be fine. Great camping

Beautiful views. We could see the smoke in the valley.

A dull hike with spectacular vistas on both side of the ridge...the trail is above tree line and in the sun.

Beautiful view throughout and perfect for all ages!

Water level is high and lake is beautiful. A little snow remains. This was so much fun to mountain bike I did the loop twice.

Good first hike when arriving at this elevation. I did not do the return portion of the round trip. Instead I walked into town on Sherwin Creek Road so I missed the up-hill portion of the hike. As a result, it was an easy hike.

Simple hike.
Not a hike if you want to be away from people and enjoy the peacefulness of the mountains.

Lots of xc runners and mountain bikers present. Can't really blame them as this is better suited for trail running and biking. Enjoyable trail, relatively mellow with some nice views of the valley and ski area. Feel like it should be rated as "easy" though. The gain is only noticeable on your return assuming a start at old mammoth road. Saw a good sized buck near Sherwin Creek Road.

Beautiful hike around the lake - as of today, parts of the trail are still covered in snow! Nice and level trail with creek crossings. One of my favorites - you can ride the lakes trolley up to it to make it totally relaxing.

Anyone know whether or not a Polaris Ranger would make it up this road? Wondering if the "High Clearance" would be a problem for a ranger.

Thanks-

Took the kids here yesterday and the trail was covered in snow in most spots! Made it a bit challenging at times but we were able to make our way. I'd love to visit again when the snow has completely melted.

Snow stopped us half way up. Nice rocky trail, a couple technical areas with deep ruts & boulders.
But a stock Suburban made it to the camp ground half way up.

We were able to hike most of the way through the meadow and sagebrush and forest, but did stop at a big pile of snow blocking the path before we could see Mammoth Rock. However, it didn't matter to us because it was a beautiful trail. The best part though was all the deer! We were walking at around 4pm and saw at least 14 deer happily munching their dinner and watching us walk past. We had a great afternoon.

Pretty straight forward climb around the golf course and past the Snowcreek properties to bring you right up to Mammoth Rock. Pretty sandy at the beginning of the trail. This time of year there are still patches of snow with some being pretty significant. Some you can walk right over, others are too difficult and you'll need to walk around the snow to get past. Then right before the bend in the trail that sets you up for a straight shot at the Rock, there's steep, icy snow blocking the entire path and no routes around it exists (as of today). I had to stop at that point as I was ill prepared. If anyone is planning on doing this trail in the next week or two it might be a wise idea to bring some crampons and maybe even an ice ax to help lean on.

There are some beautiful wildflowers along the trail (especially at the beginning) and tons of opportunities to photograph wildlife. Came up on quite a number of deer during 5 or so encounters with them. Was never able to get a stable picture of them so I decided to go slow and quite. That's when I came across a blonde colored bear roughly 100ft. ahead climbing up towards the trail. So I backtracked a bit, "got loud", and started heading back in his direction. Pretty amazing sight.

There are TONS of deer out here right now due to the massive migration that just happened.

Used as a cut through to the main road as we were leaving Mammoth and wanted to stop and take the Inyo Craters trail - scenic drive through some pine forest, dry sandy soil, views of the Sierras and some neat geothermal features.

We went on Dualsport motorcycles, pretty easy most of the way. Beautiful clear skies that day. It's not listed here, but check out the trail to McGee Mountain, Mt Morrison Rd off 395. That was hairy, steep, lots of switchbacks on the way up. Beautiful view of the valley from the top. I'd rather been on 4 wheels than 2 that day. You Jeep people would love it !

Great spot. Awesome camping at the end, and midway along the creek. I'm not sure how good of a hike it would be, lots of loose shale rock along the path. Fishing was poor which I was bummed about.

So beautiful the whole way! Lots of waterfalls and beaver dams. Took my 63 year old parents who are not avid hikers and they did great (with rests of course).

Trail is mostly on pavement around lake. But we ended up following the lake. Easy hike. Great views of the mountain.
