Absolutely gorgeous walk around the lake. The rock formations in the mountains are out of this world. We recommend going a sunset. The water in the lake is aqua colored and worth the drive.

Breathtaking

It’s full of snow now!!! So beautiful!

Today was a great day for a quiet morning hike around the lake, so I hopped on the first shuttle at 7:30 am to conveniently gain access at the trailhead. This trail ascends up and over sturdy rock formations at the beginning before flattening out as it hugs the bank of the lake the rest of the way. Also, about halfway along you may hear running water, so look for a a plank/bridge to escort you over a stream to a wonderful waterfall. The remainder of the trail will have full vegetation surrounding it with occasional cleartings providing excellent views of the lake. I heard some hikers across the lake as I went along and there was also a fishing boat later, but otherwise very peaceful. All in all, a beautiful leisurely hike.

Beautiful hike with a steep incline and great views of the lakes! The train descends to crystal lake where you can hang out and enjoy the water. It’s unique because I think you can only access that lake through a hike, therefore the area is relaxing and quiet! We did this hike after driving up from LA and it was perfect because of the short amount of time needed and the great scenic rewards!

I loved following the river canyon for so many miles! Very scenic and a must if you can manage long distances.

It was a fun trail. First time doing some off-roading like this in a stock af jeep. The hairpin turn was easy, just pull in head first on the turn out and back into the mountain and you’re all set.

Beautiful, one of my favourite lakes in the basin. Steep climb up but fantastic views

Just amazing.

Amazing hike with great views.

Great short hike we did with the family. Easy hike with a stream flowing from the lake a long the hike. We did this in Mid November with the lake and stream party frozen.

The train can be a little tedious but the destination totally justifies the work to get there. Take your time and you’ll be fine. Very calm and peaceful. Surreal and picturesque!!

Beautiful Hike! The climb back up from Pika lake is a bit rough on tired legs. Went 11/14 and had a lot of fun playing on the frozen lakes

Beautiful view!

Soo beautiful view for such a small and easy hike!

Steep hike all the way up to the lake, great views along the way but the lake was very small and hardly any water left in it this time of year. So, if you're doing this hike, do it for the views rather than the lake. I was the only hiker all the way up and back.

Very beautiful lake, great shorter hike, easy to do! First stopped off at Barrett Lake and then went on to TJ Lake. Trail was easy to follow, had no trouble following it

I am a seasoned hiker for sure, having hiked much longer and harder trails than this one, down into the Grand Canyon, up to Wheeler Peak, as well as Grinnell Glacier and other tough hikes, so this hike wasn't very hard on me as far as switchbacks were concerned. But what got me was that the trail wasn't in good of shape as I would have liked it to be, up towards the 3/4 mile point. The trail is very narrow there and right by a very steep drop off. If you weren't careful and made a wrong move or slipped on the loose sandy terrain, you could potentially fall to your death right there. Way too narrow for my taste. Not for people afraid of heights.

Beautiful short hike, the lake is stunning with its emerald color and I had the hike and lake all to myself when I went on 30 October 2018. I definitely recommend doing this hike if you're in the Mammoth Lakes area. One of the most beautiful lakes I have seen.

Fantastic!

This is a rough hike up from Reds Meadow. Most of it hikes through burn area that has little to no shade, so bring water and take your time.

We planned to hike up to Crystal Lake but saw a sign up to the crest so we had to do it. It was well worth it. You can see many lakes in the area from the top. When you get toward the top you will see a trail to the left and onward to the top. A couple told us to keep going up to the crest and it loops at the top. You can see the back of half dome at the top. Beautiful hike!

Awesome hike to a beautiful lake. A must do hike- we continued up to the crest overlooking so many lakes.

My wife and I hiked down this easy trail as a warm-up for more difficult tails. It’s a great first hike of a season. The views are very nice and the trail passes through three different kinds of terrain. Note that while we were on the trail at least 80 cross country runners ran by and we were constantly having to step off the trail to allow the runners to pass; there were also a number of trail bike riders as well. This is a seasonal issue as I have done this trail many times before and rarely seen anyone on the trail.

Doing the Mammoth Pass Trail without diverting to McLoed Lake would be a big mistake. It requires very little additional effort and the lake is beautiful. The view of the valley is usually fantastic but today it was hidden in smoke from the fire in Yosemite. I hike this trail every year and it never disappoints. Seeing the forest come back from the 1992 fire is amazing. I only hike one way, from Horseshoe Lake to Reds Meadow, and take the shuttle back to Mammoth. I like to hike in early morning and then have breakfast at the little cafe in Reds Meadow before getting on the shuttle which has a stop directly outside of the cafe. This year I had the added treat of having my wife join me on the hike.

Great hike with panoramic views and fall colors.
