Great hike - pretty easy the first 3/4 mile, then gains quickly until the top. My watch read 2.75 miles at the top. Did the round trip in 3hrs with 1.5L water. Is a bit rocky at the top, and easy to lose the trail in some parts. Pretty windy the whole way, which made it nice since I went midday. Definitely recommend. The views from the top are amazing!

The fissures are super cool. As noted there is NO MARKED TRAIL so either download the AllTrails or locate the fissures in a satellite map and use an offline GPS to get to them. Bring insect repellent as there are gnats and other insects up there. Oh and there was a random wasp trying to attack me for part of the way but I had full pants and a face net on so it didn't succeed. Bring a stick so you can whack at bushes before walking through in case of snakes (I didn't see one, but it's worth being cautious since there isn't a trail). It's only 3 km out and back but don't underestimate the amount of water you'll need walking up all that volcanic ash. I'd recommend at least 2 L per person *minimum* during the summer.

Nice trail if you want to avoid the heat of lower elevation trails during the summer. Nice areas of good tree shade as well. While it’s little elevation gain, you pretty much go straight up until you hit the alpine lakes so take it easy. The way back down is a breeze though.

Spectacular views at the top. It’s not a long trail, but gains elevation quickly.

Hiked out last week to camp on the shore of Summit Lake with my brother and dog. No snow on trail when we went and conditions were perfect! About 6 miles from Virginia lakes trailhead to Summit Lake and Hoover Lakes. Must have bear can and wilderness permits to camp as its on the edge of Yosemite Wilderness. So beautiful!

Simple and satisfying trail. Can get crowded during mid-day and some parts of the trail are a little overgrown. We hiked with our dog and it was manageable. The Tufas are so cool looking and you can get pretty close. We didn't notice any smell. Fellow hikers were generally mindful of social distancing and wearing masks when approaching each other.

Pretty hike. Elevation starts at 12K feet, so you will hike slower than normal. Worth the effort though.

Add it to your bucket list. start early and pack plenty of water and you camera/phone. Definitely a moderate hike. Absolutely gorgeous scenery. trail was clean.I always bring a garbage bag and pick up trash on my feet down but there literally was not one piece of trash to pick up, I am very happy to say. On this particular day in July we had zero bugs but I am told that sometimes there are bugs. There are periods of deep shade, tree roots, small streams to cross, rocks to scramble over, and open sections on the scree field with no shade at all. There is an old miner's cabin near the top. basically, this trail has it all! We would have loved to have kept going but definitely would have needed to pack more food and a lot more water. It was a fantastic work out!

If you are an experienced hiker this trail is moderate. For the average hike every now and then it can be difficult. Very much worth the effort. So many lakes and ponds around every corner. So beautiful. I think my GF said wow at least 15 times. Pack a lunch, take it slow and easy and enjoy the views. BUG SPRAY AND SUNSCREEN ARE A MUST!!!

One of the best summit experience! Not for the fainter heart and folks who don’t like venture out using route-finding instinct.
