Day hiked July 14th to Lois Lake, did not make it to Scmidell due to time constraints. Nice trail with nice mix of forested, open granite areas, wild flowers, lakes and mountains. Trail is easy to lose in granite area, just need to head towards pass and take note of surroundings for hike back. Lots of open area which made it hot, bring lots of water or bring a filter. Plenty of lakes along the way so take advantage of them to cool off. Switch backs up pass is nicely graded.

This was my first time going off road in my new TRD Pro 4Runner. It was a beautiful drive, a littlr dusty. I ended up taking a side trail that was pretty difficult but the 4Runner took everything like a champ. When I got off this side trail I got lost and I couldnt make it back on without a spotter. I just drove around for hours and finally found pavement. I will be coming back soon.

This trail / rough road was fun to explore. We kept finding ouselves on other roads because we did not have the map zoomed in enough. There are lots of roads and trails to explore connected to this trail. We did not find anything that a stock 4x4 could not handle. Make sure to download the map because there is no cell service.

one of first big Jeeping experience. great trail but be wary.. if you don't have a true off roading vehicle this can be an almost impossible trek. a few boulders did have us getting stuck. overcame with a lil keeper help .... definitely for those able to manuver boulders , thin sides and come prepared in case you stuck.
also saw off-road motorcycle on trail and pull to allow passing.
one of our Favs on Camping spot found.

Trail is not closed, we did it today... Was amazing, a tiny bit of snow, but trail was in good condition. Cant wait for summer... They made it easier, there is no more crap that will smash your truck :)

Is this trail open in winter?

I drove this trail with a stock 2017 Chevrolet Colorado 4X4 (non-Z71) V6 and it was easy and fun and had no problems. The view is amazing too. I also drove other trails nearby in Darlington California which were also pretty simple with some trails being more bumpy in tougher. This was my first offroad adventure and wont be my last. I will eventually lift this truck to go through the tougher routes. If you are new to offroading or want a simple offroading experience then this a great trail.

Beautiful trail. Went mid/late June and it was still covered in snow. Trail is also not well marked. Bring a map and compass. Trail is mostly marked with cairns. Didn't make it to our final destination due to heavy snow- neither did 2 other groups. Bright side- not crowded.

Nice trail if you are in the area. If you go late spring or early summer start at the top, as you may get blocked by snow, even if it looks clear from the bottom! Be prepared to move or go over fallen trees, as clean-up of this trail is not anyone's #1 priority. There are a few good views of the Crystal range, but mostly you see trees and dust. Any high clearance vehicle would be fine, 4WD would be nice on a few spots, but not required.
This would be a great trail for a first time 4WD trip for anyone looking to get into 4 wheeling, just go mid to late summer, so the path will be clear.

I love this trail! Traveling from North to South gives us a great payoff at the end. Strawberry Pass, and views of Caples Lake, Kirkwood Ski Resort, Kit Carson Pass and so much more. In late July spring color starts to show and makes for spectacular photos. In 2009 it snowed on us in late July at Caples Lake, but for the past two years its been outstanding, Camping at the pass is great also. Watch the sun go down after a long day on the trail, and wake up early to camp coffee and the High Sierra sunrise.
The trail is steep and has some great rocks. Traffic travels in both directions and can be fun when traveling through narrow and steep corridors. For us, this trail is the first leg of a three highway tour. Strawberry Pass to Deer Valley, Deer Valley to SlickRock, SlickRock to SPFR 52 (Dorrington to Beardsley). Great trip!!!

We started from Hwy 88 at the Caples Lake maintenance station near Carson Pass and it ends at Strawberry, Hwy 50. Some parts were difficult and a come along maybe a helpful tool to have. More water crossings in the spring not anything to deep. Scenic and a fun day!
