I highly recommend this dog-friendly dirt trail with great views of the small beautiful lake. My yellow lab and I have ran this trail at least 10 times. My lab loves to swim so this trail is perfect for him to jump in and out along the way and I love the dirt trail because I have bad knees and always looking for a good dirt trail to jog on!

I just loved this hike today. Lived here for 25 years and have never seen it only herd about it. Great place for a hike with my dog and a sack lunch spot once I was done. Ran into fishermen, horse riders and people just there for a picnic. As you get deeper into the forest area the nats got bad but it cleared up once you were in the sun. Some muddy areas not bad at all. Wear your hiking boots there are a couple of steep inclines that are no more than 20’ or so. No biggy. The 2.5 mile hike is a must.

The scenery is beautiful and that's about it (no swimming allowed). Every 'horn' section of this Lake was a mosquito infested nightmare. Wet, rotting wood and stagnant water in each section has created a breeding ground of epic proportions, that can only be safely navigated if your clothes are made of citronella candles. When the light hit the water just right you could see bugs covering the surface of the lake like a blanket. An easy trail should be accessible to people who cannot climb. This trail requires figuring out how to cross muddy banks using fallen trees and/or rocks and climbing a washed-out embankment using tree roots to climb up to the other side, all the while trying to keep your body out of all the poison oak. Nice easy hike. Great for dogs! Trail is a little washed out, so it gets muddy in some areas. Lots of shade, except for one small part. Light traffic, at times I had the lake to myself. Must use bug spray!

Perfect kid-friendly day hike! The lake is pretty (although you can’t swim), and the trail is flat and easy. The trail winds around the lake, through grass and woods, with plenty of shade. The lake is far enough off the beaten path that it’s not crowded.

I recommend this trail. It's a pretty easy walk all the way around. One spot can be a bit difficult in the gully but totally fine for kids. We didn't see much wildlife but did get to see a Black Headed Grosbeak which was gorgeous. Would do this hike again for sure!

End of May. Mosquitos and ticks everywhere!

Over grown weeds near river. Had a about 30 ticks that I had to pick of pants. Other than that good hike!

not as many sit spots as id like but beautiful trail and not too too far from sac. i would be careful if not a somewhat usual hiker due to their were very steep parts and one part that led to a gorge ypu had to go into to get to the other side of the trail.

Enjoyed the shaded trail with lots of history. The info kiosk has excellent murals and explanations of what the wheels are for.

Is rather a nice spot, lots of trees, picnic tables and a dog park. Never heard of this place till yesterday, and after seeing the wheels pop up in a news feed it sparked my curiosity. The park was not very busy when I had arrived, but I do recommend a buddy system as the individuals I encounter on my visit were not sending out a very welcoming vibe. In fact it was rather odd and I cut my trip short to only the one side of the park where wheel #4 is. If you do not mind the lady in the bottom lot digging through her personal belonging in the trunk of "her car" for a lighter, paying no minds to the "clean air" signs and following you to the three odd men at the top by all means go alone if you're cool with that. Be cautious of your surroundings and who is around you.

Easy hike! Great for beginners! The trail was flooded about a mile and a half in, so we had to turn around and go back the way we came. Definitely coming back later in the season to finish what we started.

Others have noted that you need a permit. I feel like that note should be at the top of the description and not at the bottom. Middle Bar Road is pretty terrible for a paved road. I was in my Jeep when I drove down it, but I can't imagine taking it in a sedan. I live in Sacramento and drove up to the area in an attempt to try something other than the trails near Auburn. I honestly wouldn't recommend this trail to anyone not living in the area just because the drive down to the trail head is long, the road is bad, and you need to purchase a permit beforehand. I feel like there are better places to go hiking in the greater area.

Was an amazing hike with a beautiful scenery.

Not sure if I would like this trail during the summer months. Nice February hike! There was multiple spots of ash where fires were burned previously (some spots were still warm) along the trail turning the corner and heading back (Eastern Terminous area). Weird!
