Great easy trail! Mastadon peak was amazing!

Trash has been cleaned up by FODM and other hiking club members as volunteers. Great 5.2 miles except for the first 1/2 mile. Very interesting topography, see photos. Shade at different times of the day depending on time of year too. Be sure to take two liters of water on hot days . Watch for trail markers , some are easy to miss . Not good for bikes or horses. Slot canyon, 5-6 small dry water falls. Wear bike gloves to prevent hand damage going up or down water falls. Have fun!

not too hard nephews liked the slot canyons and climbing on the rocks. well marked

Beautiful trail! Very sandy. Not too bad of an incline

Great hike.... one marker out and is easy to get off trail.

This was a great hike. It was the perfect challenge. Pretty easy but I did get quite tired something back. It took us about three hours to complete. We came across a Dessert Patch Nose snake, tarantula, wild hares, jackrabbits, ground squirrels, lizards and loads of birds. Make sure you have good sun protection if you're hiking during the day. A lot of the trail is in the sun.

this is a well marked trail and tons of cool rock formations. if we had more light could've went further. Highly recommend this one, I'll be back for sure.

The trail is very well marked except for the very last portion down into the palm oasis. We hiked from Cottonwood Campground and took Mastodon Peak Loop back which added a little mileage, but was well worth it. We also had a great view of the Salton Sea. It was a hot day (high of 95) and there is almost no shade. Took a lunch break in the shade at the oasis. Bring plenty of water!

Great trail even though there was no actual Joshua trees to be seen but there is a variety of plant and animal life to be enjoyed. Started the trail before sunrise and hiked about 6 hours out and back with time to sit eat a snack and enjoy the amazing view. I would definitely suggest adding the Mastadon mine loop into this hike worth the extra mile.

Great trail! A little long but mostly flat until the end when there are a few canyons to climb in/out of. Trail into the Oasis canyon is difficult to follow - NPS warned not to climb into the oasis canyon. The trail out of the canyon was near impossible to follow and we ended up off the trail at parts. The oasis is really cool and worth the trek!

Challeging, interesting and fun hike. Great "wilderness" experience, (except the powerlines), only minutes from a major population center. Highly recommend!

Decided to do this trail during night time. It was a great experience. Overall a pretty easy hike expect for the last part. The little loop at the end was a cool little adventure in itself especially in the dark. Bring a flash light if you decide to go night time.

Solid, relatively easy hike that took roughly three hours. Not many joshua trees but there was nice desert flora and interesting boulder formations. Saw a large desert tortoise as well. Watch the heat/sun and bring plenty of water!

Loved it. Thankfully it wasn’t super hot when we went. J tree is just mesmerizing. This trail is in a part of the park that doesn’t have a lot of the famed Joshua trees but the desert flora in this area is lovely!

The view from the ridge is quite impressive as others have noted; however there were large parts of the hike that were just open sandy road. Not particularly interesting scenery at those points. Some good scrambling required to get up parts of the summit. The whole area felt like you could be on the set of a Star Wars movie. Not a bad hike but not the most dynamic. Definitely bring lots of water and sun screen- little shade for most of the trek.

Definitely mind the heat, due to dried up river beds, the path can get hazy. There are a lot of jackrabbits running around if you take the path to the loop around the trail as well. Again be careful, and if you don’t know where you’re heading, turn back around. Given that, some great views, and you definitely get the desert adventure feel here.

Dangerous in summer. Do not attempt under extreme heat conditions. I mean it. Bring at least 8 bottles of Gatorades etc.

Park in the dirt lot at the intersection of Avenue 42 and Golf Center. Trail was interesting and fun. Keep looking for the trail markers. There was only 1 place where I went along a wash and missed a marker. I jogged this trail early in the morning and there was shade among the rocks. Was cool seeing the rock upslips from earthquake activity!

Pretty cool desert trail good elevation gains and views not much shade unless you go in the morning or later in the day you get shade from the canyons. A little bit of sand it’s well marked a really good option on this side of the valley if you don’t wanna drive all the way over to the bump and grind or cross.

saw lots of local lizards and rabbits on trail. no wildflowers as one reviewer mentioned here. Trail was marked well enough, every time I was concerned I was lost, a clear trail marker showed up

A wonderful trail that showcases the Colorado Desert of the Sonoran very well. Very different biome from the northern part of the park and it is littered with many different plant species. Can’t count how many jack rabbits and lizards I saw. It can be easy to lose the trail and follow a dried creek bed so watch for the signs, of which there are many. The trail itself was a great run through of the nature nearby but the oasis at the end felt like something out of the movies. Definitely like nothing I’ve seen before with these towering palms in this little rock valley. There wasn’t much water in there and I don’t know if there ever is but I imagine it would make it even nicer
