Great hike! I did this in mid-April and had no problem with insects and the weather was ideal. Finding the trailhead was a little challenging and I’m glad I had a Jeep...I used 4WD to get to the trailhead. It’s near a giant pile of boulders. The trail itself is very difficult and will take longer than you think to get to the top. The last mile includes some very steep sections in skree so be prepared. The view on top is fantastic and makes the hike worth it. The southern sierras are beautiful. Bring lots of water!

Gotta drive 3miles in to hit the starting point. Once I got there- I saw no signs that I was in the right location. I went off of mapquest and everyone’s recorded trails on this app. There was no shade or trees, plenty of flies even at the top of the hillside. Got sidetracked and ended up on a completely different path. There were hunters and target shooters everywhere. Wear your bright colors and try to stay on path.
Best part about the hike was the small creek I crossed to get to the other side of the road.

So I would probably give this hike a 5 star rating for the view at the top alone. However, the hike up was awful. This is one of the hardest trails I have ever done. First of all the flies (more like swarms of nats) were horrible the whole way up. My boyfriend and I had to constantly swat them away from our face the entire journey and in doing so we missed a few trail markers along the way allowing us to get off trail at least three times. Speaking of trail markers, we saw them everywhere! We got off trail a few times scaling up through brush and steeper hills than the trail itself, but the crazy thing is we saw trail markers out there. So obviously we weren’t the first people to think we were heading in the right direction. However it becomes incredibly confusing because like I said there are trail markers everywhere! It wasn’t until we were descending back down the trail we were able to clearly see where we screwed up multiple times and saw the correct markers in sight. Anyways be prepared for this being an all day event especially if you do get lost because it’s easy to do! Brings lots and lots of water and be prepared to have your ass kicked. This is no easy trek. It’s straight up a damn mountain and you have to be willing to do a lot of rock scrambling as well. The view is incredible though and it makes it worth it. If ya bring bug spray or some kind of bug hat you will probably have a better time than we did.

This is the hardest trail I've done. Steep uphill climb not to be underestimated. Don't over pack! Carry lots of water, a snack and not much more. Plan on it taking all day to get to the peak. We only made it 2 miles up before turning back. Can't wait to try this trail again and conquer Owens peak. There is parking at the trailhead but there is a larger boulder blocking half the road. We made it around it with our jeep but we were on the edge of a drop off. Next time we'll park below that and hike the extra 15 mins to the trailhead.

Tougher than expected, didn't make it all the way to the top, the sun was dropping pretty quick and we didn't want to hike out in the dark. Can't wait to go back and complete the whole hike.
