Shady! Surprising green belt trail near urban areas. Sadly, too much trash.

Very bad/confusing directions. The map (and presumably the distance) has the route taking a shortcut using Newt Pond trail but the text directions don’t. We got turned around where Newt, Shady Canyon and Chabot-to-Garmin converged. All in all our “4.9” mile hike turned into 8 miles.

I did like the trail, a good workout. It’s shady and good for dogs, not lots of traffic. However the there are really no trail signs except at the trail heads. There are lots of areas with multiple side trails and it’s pretty confusing if you haven’t done it before, even if following the map on your phone.

High Ridge Trail part is hilly and open to the sun. Dry Creek Trail part is in a forested canyon, so narrow trail mostly in the shade. Nice combo. But there are a lot of forks/off shoots and not enough signs so you can go through a run around, even with this app. Had issues finding where Dry Creek Trail hooks up to Meyers Ranch Trail coming out of the forest. Scraped my ankle on a rogue barbed wire that was hiding in some brush. Precarious outing for what was supposed to be a ‘walk in the park’.

Great hike with my teenage boys. Mostly shaded all the way. A few spots a bit steep but not a difficult hike at all. We saw a deer and lots of lizards.

Cattle gate locked just under 3 miles in. Had to cut through Five Canyons neighborhood to continue loop

Was a great family hike with the kids. Lots of shade, rocks, water, and things to explore for the little ones. Only negative was we had a hard time staying on this loop so we went a bit more than 2.2 miles. Also while there is not much in line throughout, about halfway it’ll hit a little hard with the stairs and uphill. Totally fun hike though, 4 year old loved it!

Would recommend this trail for a run or a short hike with some elevation. The views weren't that great but had an overall great time running this trail. Some parts were pretty rocky so I had to slow down on some parts to make sure I wouldn't slip

Easy trail along a creek. Fairly pretty scenery. Buggy on the way in, not bad through the second half.

There was no trail on the north side of the pond to connect but otherwise great hike. Dog loved it and not to many people

I would call this hard not moderate. Took me 3 hours to complete. Not well marked easy to take a wrong turn. I ended up walking down the road a bit as I took a wrong turn and the connected back to it about .75 miles up.

I love this trail but have never managed to complete it (starting at 5 canyons water tower) when I make my way towards garin, I make it usually to the shaded area before you begin the climb towards the radio tower and out of the shaded canyon before I am stopped by usually 20-30 cattle on the trail. I have tried many times to just casually walk through them making sure not to get close to babys. I have been charged at by a bull more than once and am really hesitant to complete this trail. I don’t have problems like this with cattle in other areas. Does anyone have any tips on how to deal with this?

Some parts of the trails could use some maintenance. Overall an interesting hike with a variety of wilderness (has both shaded and unshaded parts) and civilization (crosses light traffic and residential areas).

The regional park this trail leads into was closed today, at least the route I took. I ended up doubling back and walking on the paved golf course, which was at the fork. Great views of the San Francisco Bay and San Francisco in the distance. Easy walk. Notas much shade as I was hoping for. I liked that the trail wasn’t filled with people, as other people mentioned, and the view, other than that, I’m going to have to try it one more time when the trail is actually open or go on another path to really have a sense if I like it or not.

I have mixed feelings about this trail. Even following the map, and I’m pretty savvy, I still ended up off course. The switch from trail to suburbia sidewalk was not for me and the signage was lacking...which attributes to my wrong turn. I chose to take a steep, non-trail jaunt, under the road/bridge, to try and get back on course and in the process fell a few times and cracked my phone. My own fault as I tried to look at the map and my phone to get back on trail. I do like that the App warned me that I was going the wrong way! I like that dogs can be off leash. There are some really wonderful tree lined areas and there are shady spots to relax and cool down, so the no shade callout is not the case. Now, maybe the section that I missed is no shade but near the lake you do have shaded spots.

Perfect combination of shaded and exposed areas. There is a nice challenging incline. Nice short hike to squeeze into a busy day.
