HikingGreat!

In spite of being a weekend, there were very few hikers on the trail. This hike is for the most part, open, so not suitable on a hot day. The Calaveras Ridge trail starts off as wide path that doubles as a fire road and continues on its upward journey almost for a mile and you are never away from the new Dublin Hill community houses during this initial stretch. It is only when you make the sharp turn on to the Donlon loop trail that you get any sense of remoteness. As it slopes down you get the feeling you are at the bottom of a large bowl with the surrounding hills making up its walls. It is an upward climb again as it meets the Martin Canyon Creek trail where you make a right and go on a ridge. Here you are treated to some grand sights of the hills to your left. You meander down a sloping hill following zigzag paths to reach a thickly wooded area. Continuing down you suddenly reach a set of town houses. This is McBride lane. A short trudge along this will take you back to the trails. The directions to get back on the trail are well marked. Heading up the path, you pass through a gate to the open skies. You follow this to loop back. On your right is thick vegetation on the slopes with the mature tree branches kissing the sloping grounds. You reach the point where you head back the path that is close to the ‘bowl’ mentioned earlier. On your way back on the Calaveras Ridge trail don’t miss Donlon Point. A very nice overlook where you can look down on Hwy 580 as also the BART track. If there is a train moving on the tracks so much the better. Soak in the sights before starting on the final lap. A nice 4 miles. Would do it again sometime.

Such an amazing kid friendly easy trail! Make sure you bring lots of water since there is no shade. Recommend trail really early in the morning or later afternoon.

Short hike with 360 degree views of Dublin. The end bit is steep before it loops back so definitely need good hiking boots. You get to traverse a couple of ups and downs of the rolling hills. Recommended for beginners.

Hiking

I did the Donlan Loop Trail and combined it with the Calaveras Ridge Trail. The Donlan Loop Trail is short and sweet with minimal elevation gain. You have views of the Tri-Valley, I-580, and you can see as far as Livermore/Altamont Pass. Other than that, there are no distinct features of this trail, but it's still a nice loop hike.

It was a beautiful experience to hike here. You definitely feel like you are Zeus looking over Dublin and surrounding neighborhoods. I had a wonderful time, I did not come across any snakes.

Hiking

The first .75 miles of this trail have really great views. After that, the amount of people you see tapers off a lot and the views are pretty similar to what you get in the beginning. The trail is wide, easy to follow, and there's only a few minor uphills. The end of this trail is at the base of a powerline. It is fairly remote. A satisfyingly simple 5 mile there-and-back with plenty of East Bay flora (hills and wildflowers) and fauna (cows).

Very easy hike...not many people on the trail. Cold and foggy in the morning but clears up once the sun is out.

HikingNo shade

You need to hike this trail early or in the late afternoon... not a lot of shade. Parking was open when I arrive 7:30am on a Sunday which is good. It’s an easy to moderate trail depending on your capability... view of 580 & 680 was amazing on the Donlon Point an extra 0.34 mile hike but worth it.
