Definitely lives up to its name! My boyfriend and I did this trail to train for a backpacking trip we will be going on. There are six, very steep summits to the top. It was quite the workout! We will definitely be back here very soon.

Feel the burn in the first mile then beautiful trails and streams for loop back. Do it twice cause it's so nice.

Great trail!! Lives up to its name and kicks some butt (in the beginning). Definitely worth the trek as once you make it to the "top" it opens up into a beautiful expanse. There are several other trails to follow that are pretty flat and easy to maneuver. The trail is clean and clear of brush. Saw one dead snake on my run today, but otherwise nothing other than some birds. The grass and trees are all still so green and quite lovely!! Gonna go back again next week!

great hike! perfect balance for a good workout and not too long as well. after the first mile, its easy. Depending on fitness, would rate it as moderate to high.

What a lovely nature hike this trail was! The trail is easy to lose, and my husband and I found ourselves turned around here and there, but it was in those moments that we stumbled on a lizard, a garter snake, a turtle poking its head out of a lake, a gorgeous lakeside trail, puddles full of tadpoles, and the sweetest duck couple paddling through what looked to be a small man made canal. There’s little ponds and streams everywhere and two big, gorgeous lakes, all teeming with various creatures. I don’t think I’ve ever seen this much life on a hike actually. And the hills are rolling with greenery and wildflowers. Really enjoyed this hike!

Great trail! I love the challenge going up Training Hill and then the Loop is easy! In the Spring there are nice little waterfalls along the way!

One of my group’s go-to trails for incline training. We always do it counterclockwise (steep hill first) and the easy decline after you reach the top never gets old. The trail is easy to follow. Watch out for poison oak!

Decent short hike for a workout! Climb up the steep hill and then easy hike back. Weather is good today for a hike. The trail is green with wildflower and butterflies!

good challenging hike for the first half mile or so, and then it levels out and starts to descend towards the end of the trail. there are 4 waterfalls on the trail you can't miss them. best time to go would be in March when it is raining.

great trail! If you chose to hike counterclockwise the first mile or so is definitely a straight up hike with very little level ground to recover on. Once you do reach the top of the hill it is smooth sailing from there. Today was my second time hiking it and it was a beautiful time of the year to explore up there, not too many people and I did encounter snake.

It's a pretty nice trail! Did the full loop this morning. Took me 4 hours to hike the whole thing. It was pretty muddy. The trail seemed like a small creek at some parts! Be prepared to bring some good hiking shoes for this! The trail is marked out fairly well. A few of the mile markers are scratched off though. There was maybe two times thy I had to take a minute to figure out where I was going but it was fairly easy to figure out. Views are decent, nothing too crazy. But overall, a solid hike! Just wish it wasn't so muddy.

Great hill for a workout. Very steep starting out, then rolling hills afterwards.

The best workout/training trail. I will usually take it to the top of the hill and turn around and do the descent on Pig Farm (easier on the knees). Get to the trailhead either early on the weekends or late in the afternoon (parking is a bitch but worth it).

Different from most trails I've hiked, but I enjoyed it. Did the entire trail and loved the views.

I think that the reviews that consider this easy maybe run this thing backwards lol.

It gets really steep at some spots. Can’t wait until it dries up a bit so it isn’t as hard to run down.

Beautiful! Did this hike in February when it hadn’t rained in a while, great trail conditions with only a few muddy places here and there. There’s a few cutoffs also if you want to make the loop shorter. Can’t wait to go do this loop again!

We started at the bridge that crosses the American River and headed towards Cool. A little drizzly today with some fog but it made it kind of spooky cool. The trees that cover the trail kept us from getting more rained on. Got up to the parking area in Cool and took a little break and headed back down. Great trail!

Pretty trail but definitely more for bikers! They were all polite and gave us heads up when there us when there were more bikers behind them. There was one guy running the trail but other then that we were the only ones hiking.
Even though it’s mid January there were lots of ticks ready to latch on, luckily we noticed them on my dog right away before they attached. That being said, don’t stray off the path at all into the grass

Came on a January afternoon several days after a rain. Some sections of the trail were muddy but passable. Good thing we brought a change of shoes and socks. Some of the creeks were also swollen. Crossing them was a challenge. Bring $10 for the Iron Ranger if you don't have a park pass. Saw several horses on the trail. Watch out for their droppings. Lots of trail options. Not many people on the trail. They were all in the canyon chasing waterfalls. I used the AllTrails app to find our way since many of the signs are worn. Ultimately we started south on Olmstead Loop and then used some of the interior trails create a 3 mile loop. Two port-a-potties in hiking parking area and 2 vault toilets in the horse staging area. We'll be back to do more exploring. Must be beautiful in the Spring.

Great trail in the heart of the Auburn SRA for a good workout. Came early like the reviews advised and found plenty of parking at the trailhead. It was a steep grade but the fog and the water runoff made the trail muddy and wet. Had to turn off at Pig Farm to shorten the trek due to uncanny weather conditions higher up the hill. Will definitely start using this trail in the warmer months!

I wouldn’t consider hard.... maybe moderate. Good views!
