Walking

Great cardio workout, around a 1 mile steep incline. I didn’t give it a 5 bc there aren’t many things to look at. A few spots overlook hwy 49, which is loud. If you pass the trail toward the footbridge it adds a tiny bit of mileage but will give you the best views of the day.

First, pay attention to the given map. I went up the wrong trail for a good half mile until I realized I was on another trail. Second, tons of poison ivy. Third, the streams are full of bugs. BRING BUG SPRAY. Lastly, do NOT go in hot weather. The whole way back to the trailhead is uphill. I made the mistake of coming in 100 degree weather. NEVER AGAIN.

It was nicely shaded and parts of the trail were a pretty decent incline. We hit the trail counter-clockwise so we managed to get the incline over at Maine Bar Trail which made the hike worth it.

Lots of people and I arrived at sunrise. Plus, the trails and views are mediocre, especially for this area. Glad to have completed this trail, but couldn’t wait for it to finish.

Trail is beautiful, but it is downhill out, uphill back no matter which direction you take. While it is shaded, it’s also humid, hot, and buggy. Recommend pants and tall socks, as there are a lot of blackberry bushes close to the trail, along with poison oak.

HikingGreat!

The only bad thing about this hike is that it had to end. Can't think of a better way to start your weekend. In fact, I may go up tomorrow to hike up and run the top and descent. I got there at around 8 am on a Saturday morning and it wasn't too crowded and parking was available. By the time I finished at 9:30ish the road in was a gridlock. So, if you go on a weekend, get in and out early.

I did Training Hill twice today. The hill incline is definitely a workout; it is steep and long, which is good if that is what you are looking for. It can be be crowded to find a parking spot close to the trail head, and the trail itself is close to the road at the beginning and towards the end of the trail, so it can be loud as cars fly by. There were several horses on the trail this morning, which are cool to see, but the trail is narrow at times so you have to stop and wait for the horses to pass and there is a lot of poison oak close to the path at times, so be careful where you step. The scenery is ok, but I think there are several other trails around Auburn that offer much more solace and beauty. It is good if you want some steep hill training, and it is a shorter hike so you can easily do multiple loops, but if you want something more scenic and away from the sound of cars, then this may not be your first choice.

Very challenging. But worth it once you complete the hike. Bring plenty of water if it’s hot out, or you plan on running. Pay attention to the posted signs. The incline on training hill starts before you cross the bridge go up the first incline and hang the first left best of luck and happy trails. Stay safe!

Great hike, very beautiful and lots if shade. The shade was a plus since the last 2 miles was uphill. Parking was limited and I recommend stopping in Cool to use the bathroom since there are no bathrooms at or near the trail. It was hot the last couple miles so next time I will start earlier. Overall, I really enjoyed it, very pretty and scenic!

This is THE one if incline is your thing! Been here several times and will always be a fave on my list. Starts out at the gate EASY and slowly inclines midway and gets pretty steep right when you begin the trail and is def an intense hike. If walking simply is hiking for you, this will not be your favorite lol. This trail is extremely easy to find trail with markings and signs with plenty of parking if you come early enough as there are multiple trails that share the same parking vicinity. So come early!! The parking is also FREE so that’s also a plus for me. Bring lots of water, start early and all should be good. This trail LOOPS - just remember to always keep left whenever the trail splits.

We did the full 5 mile loop with our 3 kids 13 10 5. A bit challenging for the 5 year old. But all managed. About half way there is a nice little water fall and place to stop and snack. Some steep narrow elevations spots. We got a great view of the American River. Bring bug spray and lots of water!
