I guess it’s easy, there’s nothing “tricky” but it’s mostly a steep grade down and then all uphill to come back. My daughters are 5 & 7 and we did the trail 38 minutes heading down and 45 minutes coming back up, in flip flops (we didn’t plan to hike). The river is stunning and a great place to hang out for awhile. The hike is completely worth the travels. We LOVE it. I just wouldn’t classify it as “easy.”

Nice little up and down loop.

went to the parking lot that said Red Shack Trailhead. went up the trail, there was a homeless person living just about 2 minutes into the path. continued a little bit further and the path ended, went back started again at what seemed could be a trail only to have it stop after just a very short bit...gave up!

Two of us hiked this trail. Leave extra time to explore the visitor center, the monument, and the grave sites. We lost the trail where all the paths converge in the picnic area near the monument. Trails are not well marked. But they are well maintained. There was little poison oak or berry brambles to deal with. We encountered two trail runners on our Monday hike. Good toilet facilities too. I'd like to go back.

Nice short trail. Went in August, waterfall dried up. Over-grown at beginning of trail with star-thistle.

Some great views. fair amount of shade on the trail. bring water.
You can make a second loop, that is mainly a hill, for additional cardio, it starts out as a two lane road at the north end of Monroe Trail.
We will be back.

Did this trail in the clockwise direction. This would be a good one to do both ways, and the fact that it is a full loop opens up that option. The trail has some sections with old wood fences as well as a few short stretches where you are walking on very well built and solid wooden stairs with railings. Overall this area is very well maintained. A little exposed as you stroll through the brush in some areas, and some decent elevation gain, so I wouldn't do this hike in the middle of a hot day over 85 but that's just my preference. No major vista at the top but there is an area with a picnic table and some shade near the top point with views of the surrounding Coloma area hills through the trees. Interesting history down in the park too, definitely worth a visit. One of the better hikes in this area for god workout.

This was a nice hike. However it’s straight down and straight up. Was very difficult for my young ones, not a great idea for young beginners. Mind you my kids are 3 and 5. Hope this was helpful

There are “no parking” signs near the trailhead. There’s a small turnout a few hundred feet passed the trailhead on the right that can fit 2 or 3 cars. Allow room for others to park if you’re the first there. Great, short, hike with kids (3, 4, 7). Trail was a little overgrown towards the beginning in the grass area. The water falls were pretty, but small and there’s a nice little swimming hole in the middle section of the falls. Noticed when we were leaving the falls section the the trail keeps going passed the falls, but my kids were done, so we didn’t explore further.

UPDATE
Apparently we didn’t make it all the way to the main falls, which are larger.

This was a overall nice hike down to the river. However this is not an easy hike. Hiking in is ALL downhilll and obviously back is ALL up hill and is decently steep. Brings lots of water and take breaks!

Nice and easy trail. Recommend for families and children.

EASY!!!!! Hahaha I guess if climbing Mount Shasta is easy this is. Super steep and rocky so its hard on the ankles. It pretty but it is far from easy.

It was perfect weather, and the perfect distance especially it being our first hike! Lots of shade and hills, made for a nice little workout as well:).. Me and my husband gave it four stars, and can’t wait to explore more trails :)

Naw, not easy. Steep up and down. Beautiful wildflowers and a well groomed trail.

This is a pretty steep trail. It’s not too long though. Great view of the river. Really nice to lay on the rocks next to the water.

I love this trail! I try to see how quickly I can get to the river and back. Usually it's about 45 min although I made it in 38 min one time.

UPPER Red Shack Trail is to the left from the parking lot as you approach the main trailhead. It looks like an old road and appears to ascend... if you head up this you will be on a 1.8 mile out and back trail that mostly runs along a ridgeline before a gentle 200ft descent to an overlook that provides a view of where the LOWER Red Shack Trail ends... Oh... AND there's an old abandoned gold mine shaft. For aesthetics only! Please do NOT enter!!!

Very beautiful waterfalls, it is worth the hike up the hill.

Really cool trail, a great workout coming back up from the river! Good way to get in shape for hiking if you make this a regular habit.

Very clean, quiet beautiful walk.

I really like this trail. Good views and much of it is shaded.

Went on a beautiful Tuesday morning. Used it as a Photography hike. Beautiful views of the American River. Left at 9am. Didn’t see a soul until the school buses headed in to Coloma about 11am. Great views for an easy hike

A lot more people than expected. Also more road noise. Still, an enjoyable hike and we could bring the dog.

decent for a beginner, such as myself. I will probably return in the spring the scenery will probably be better then.

Quiet and nice view along the way, very straight forward trail. Visited some of the museums in Mashall Gold park.

Shaded most of the way. Sloping ascent for 30 or so mins at slow pace.

More uphill than I expected but a really nice trail that is well-maintained. Lots of shade and some pretty amazing views. Be very careful of the poison oak.
