Amazing, one of my favorite hikes, except the portion where you’re walking on the side of a golf course for a short bit. Plenty of wild life, deer everywhere several crossing the trail in front of me. Most of the time you’re walking along a creek bed, very serene and peaceful the half way point is in direct sun so bring plenty of water and sun screen. Definitely an easy hike, just long, didn’t feel like it though. Good, even, well maintained trail great for running but you’ll want to walk through this one its beautiful. FYI this trail is shared by hikers, bikes and horses so be mindful and courteous to all.

Hike was great until that point but there’s very little shade so it’s not ideal for dogs unless you have cooling vests and water for them but incline is great :)

So, for my tips about this trail. Bring about 1-2 liters of water, a hat, sunscreen or get ready for a tan. 3/4s of your time here will be in the sun. There are two shortcuts on this trail. Yes, there 2 shortcuts because they are SHORTER. That is a short cut. The East side shortcut is about a mile less than the trail for those who aren't aware. The West side shortcut is about a half mile shorter. It is also harder than the normal trail but not for long. It's about a mile less than the paved trail but not for the fragile. It is much much steeper and I recommend nobody to take this side DOWN at night. I usually push up the paved trail and run all the way to my car down the paved trail down about 3-4 times a week before or after my gym sessions. I know this trail very well and can say anybody who has the will CAN do this hike with enough time, water and some good hiking partners :)

I do this trail often, its a great workout. There are 2 ways up to the actual top of potato mtn. Several trails extending into Claremont Wilderness! I opt for the steeper less traveled better view side. (People like to say its a shortcut but it isnt maybe a few steps less but a lot steeper forsure If you don't know the trail I'm talking about then you can't comment on it being a shortcut like that guy ^^^ that just left his review commenting on SHORTCUTS he has no clue about! ) I've clocked both trails in distance. Slightly west of the actual trail after the left turn up just past where the bees used to be. (broken down fenced flat area before the final climb up) To the right it's only a few steps shorter. You can see the path up to the top. The ones that call it a short cut are usually old or out of shape or have no clue what they're talking about but still no it alls are out there! No offense to anyone. Wish it was less crowded like it was a few yrs back but nothing lasts forever. Holidays are definitely to be avoided.

I made the mistake of bringing my bike on this trail and I am not a serious mountain biker. I did not intend to take my bike to the top but to leave it at the saddle because I had plans to chase geocaches on the west side of the saddle. Seeing that side was steep too I ditched my bike at the saddle and walked down a couple miles before turning around and coming back to the saddle then made the climb to the summit. After that I descended to get my bike then road slowly and safely down to my car on Baldy Road. This August day started off cool and overcast at 7am. Between 9-10am the overcast burned off and it got hot fast as I was ascending the summit. Good Labor Day exercise!

Good combination of shade in the beginning 1/3 and awesome scenery of the surrounding hills in the second 2/3. It was overcast today so the view wasn’t as spectacular as I’m sure it is on a clear day. It is a good strenuous workout but I wouldn’t put it in the Hard category. Don’t be afraid of it if you’re just starting out. I would recommend a knee brace for the downhill back if your subject to knee issues. Should bring a potato and a sharpie.

Definitely worth it for the view at the top. Not recommended for a beginner unless you like a challenge. It is all inclines so unless you have already been conditioned to withstand miles going up, beginners beware you will tire out.

Loved the trail. Great workout. Lots of inclines. If you like a strenuous hike with great views and wildlife. This is a hike for you!!!!

best trail around really. little bit of everything. couple small rock gardens, easy gradient at first and steepens up further on. creak runs through the trail a couple times and there's some decent berms further up. park at the elementary school lot. mind the horse poop and some sketchy drops. could definitely use a community day of trail maintenance, but still great.

Well maintained fire road. Paved paid parking. couple of porta potty"s , bring water, hat, walking stick, try to do 25 pushups or steps up's at every bench. Makes it a harder for sure. jogging it would be real ruff as well.

I did a little backpack weight training on the trail starting at the biker entrance. It was around a total of 10 miles out and back. There are a lot of different mostly shaded trails/dirt roads you can take depending on what you want to do for the first 5 miles or so.

Once the elevation gain starts, make sure you have water and sun protection because there is no shade like mentioned in previous reviews. However, there is a nice, shaded rest area towards the end of the gain with benches and outhouses. The bathrooms were locked when I was there during the week.

If you hike the part where the elevation gain starts, I would rate this hike more as moderate just because of how exposed to the sun you are.

It was a good work out went with a cousin it’s marked hard but don’t think it is. Over all great views,people,dogs, and bikers. Next time will take a potato with art work and leave it on top like the ones I saw by the way went during the fires witch was the obstacle the heat and air.

It wasn't a good idea to go mid-morning this past Sunday. . .caliente! Reason being, I was waiting on someone. I make it a point to start as early as possible esp. in these excruciatingly hot summer months! It's not difficult for me. Although it's been deemed hard, I like it! The view from the top is spectacular.

For Hikers, google "Marshall Canyon Staging Area" and start from there. Alltrails' map starts off at an elementary school that's so far from the actual trail for hikers.

Looking back at the map now, it would be best to go east on Stephens Ranch Road from the staging area. We ended up going south and then hiked north. It's all down hill and little shade.

Once we arrived at the 3.5 marker (according to Alltrails' map), we went the in a counter clock wise route. This is more difficult than going in a clock wise fashion as the east side of the trail is much steeper than the west/north side. I'll know now to check out the elevation map for better planning in the future.

The east side has little to no shade. The west/north has plenty of shade.

All the creeks were on vacation, we saw zero bodies of water on this hike during this time of the year, July 29. Was hoping to find a nice shaded hike with streams of water during the heat.

Saw a few bunnies, lizards, ants and snake skins on the trail.

Started at 3pm and got back at 7pm. Got real dark at 8-820pm in the area. Gates close at sunset or 8pm.

Looking forward to coming back here in Spring time.

I have entered the trail in La Verne, near Live Oaks—around the trail’s 3.5 mile market—and have gone both directions—towards the trailhead in Claremont and the other way up the mountain. It is easy in the Claremont side, but gets progressively more challenging the other way. Around mile marker 5, the trail starts getting steep and progressively steeper. Not easy for sure. I’d say intermediate is more accurate. Also around there is shade no more! Good workout, but be prepared and know what you are getting into!!

My hips hurt after. Not a great idea for smaller pups

Parked at Oak Mesa Elementary School off Wheeler Ave. Access to the trail through the park over the wash bride takes you to Los Robles right, to Via De Mansion right, to Orangewood St left, trail head half ways down the block on your left. Find the trail head on Google Maps “Marshall Canyon Biking Trail”

Trail has good shade throughout first 4 miles in then it opened up. Not to technical, some loose trails closer to the the top loop. Carful on Roller Coaster Trail coming down.

Located in the Claremont Wilderness. Thompson Creek is a great hike and it runs along a park. From the start of the trail you can decide whiter to make it more difficut by going left up a steep hill or keep it simple by walking, hiking or running along the drainage ditch.
