love this hike because if you want hard take 1 way or if you want easy take another way. My husband likes to do mountain biking so he can do that while the dogs, kids & I hike the hills. Bring your hiking shoes as it does get slippery on some hills especially the Volcano. BEWARE rattlesnakes & they are huge! we saw them by the cave.

Great flat trail which brings exercise and tranquility into a nice mix. Lots of plants and water foul and a great nature center that also has a free book exchange library.

I love taking my 2yr old here. Its always shaded by the huge trees and always so peaceful. It's fairly easy until the steep incline/decline.

There are a few places to park along the trail. Its great if you're looking for something flat. there's lots of shade so its great as a trail to walk/jog on a hot or humid day. very dog friendly and relatively wide paths. only downside is that it's close to highway 5 freeway and there's some noise from that as you get closer west.

A good hike - we’ll marked and maintained. No shade!! Some steep elevation changes - would probably characterize as moderate.

Bike riding. Easy with a few steep hills. Friendly people on the trail

I’ve always found this to be a rather enjoyable hike. One unlike many in the area, it has bountiful trees and logs along the path to sit and enjoy the area. Dog friendly which I’ve never run into issues with. And if you’re lucky you’ll come across a few swings people put up. Try them out!! Always such a fun time.

This is the second time I've hiked this area and I find the signage lacking, especially when you get away from the lake. So many criss-crossing trails, can be confusing. I made the mistake of going high instead of low on the east side and found myself on a harrowing climb to the peak. I couldn't turn around and go down unless I scooted down on my heinie.
Suggest hiking to the peak from the west side, unless you're up for a challenging, dangerous at times, trail.

nice scenery.

Pleasant mellow walk along the lagoon. There use to be motorcycle tracks back in the day where the turn around point and visitor center are located today. Times change

Very fun loop, some areas are a bit technical but nothing anyone can’t do. Lots of people all over the trail too.

So many trails intersecting and poor signage (IMHO). Also, many full doggie-doo bags on the sides of the trails. C'mon folks....are they biodegradable? Even if, they are gross and a health hazard.

This is my 'go to' hike as it is close to my home. I find it challenging due to the incline and the rocky trail...tests my balance. Lovely view and a place to sit and enjoy it at the top. I saw evidence of pigs (of the human persuasion) on the switchback trail today. Candy wrappers and cigarette butts! (That brush is like kindling!) They were just dropped on the trail, like Hansel & Gretel's breadcrumbs. I know anyone reading this would never be so thoughtless. Please, if you see people littering the trails, let them know that these pieces of trash pose a hazard to the wildlife. Perhaps they think there is someone who sweeps the trail behind them? I get incensed when people disrespect our earth. Thank you for your help to keep our city and wildlife safe.

love this trail for a good cardio workout. Spotted a roadrunner on last hike. Why do the dog owners put the poop in plastic bags and leave them on the trail? The poop would be better than the littering.

It was a good trek. It’s a mix of Uphill, Downhill and flat land. But watch out, there are a lot of rattle snacks (they did not harm anyone). We spotted 3 and I was going to step on 1 while I was walking. Just be more careful

My wife and I really enjoyed this hike. Plenty of shade and benches.

Nice trek. A bit slippery on the hillside and on the gravel parts. Easy to walk past trail up to Volcano.
Lots of Coyote scat and Dog poop on the trail.

It’s a nice trail. I’m not fond of the freeway noise, but the last time I ran here, a blue heron was struggling to eat a sting ray, so for that reason alone, it gets 4 stars.

Great local (for me) hike. Short but a good workout. You could easily stretch his hike to 5,6 or more miles. Trails everywhere. Amazing 360 views at the top.

LOVED IT ALL!

Around lagoon. Flatter place to run, but not excessively easy on ankles (dirt path). Mtb trails. Not for altitude or picturesque hike. Dogs allowed.

Was amazing climbing up the Volcano so much fun when you get to the top!! Loved it.

The trailhead at College/CVD has very steep ingress/egress and is full of dog poo (unlike most of the trails at Calavera).

This hike & map is purely a flat path for Dogs and Bikes, not for hiking. Luckily there are other trails there that are a better option, so it wasn’t a complete waste.

Nice, quick walk

Easy to moderate hike. Trails are hard to follow due to not enough trail signs. If going to the top of Mount Calavera it’s best to use walking sticks.

Such a pretty trail. Lots of birds. Try the trail to the right along the freeway.

This easy, quickie trail is one of my husband and my favorites since we live right down the street. There is a picnic table at the top of the hill which is a nice spot to rest. You can see the ocean from the top of the hills.
