Great trail! Mostly a rocky wash, with a few steep outcrops to climb. Great geology to see. Ran the trail in a 4th gen 4Runner with 3-inch lift and 33" AT tires, no issues. I would not recommend in a stock height 4x4, you'll take a beating.

It's an easy trail and a god stat section for a rout you can take all the way to Isabella Lake.

Has some more difficult sections that you don't have to take. A fun day out from LA
Watch out for turtles and give them the road.

Been here twice, the first time from highway 14 and the other from the 395. The route from the 395 was much more intensive than from the 14, but made it up in a stock '03 RWD 4Runner. I would recommend 4x4 or at least a locking rear diff if coming from the 395. Your mom's Camry won't make it either way.

The tunnel itself is pretty bizarre, definitely worth seeing. Bring a flashlight, as it gets pitch dark in there.

Perfect get away. Solitude, peace , open country. Tons of places to shoot and camp. Will most definitely be coming back to jawbone many many times.

Says here that this trail is accessible year round; however, today when we went there there were large rocks on the ground that were blocking the entrance to vehicle traffic.

Lots of technical parts if you follow this route. Went in a raptor and needed a spotter and 4x4. Def easier in an ATV. Once you turn to go to tunnel it is easy going.

Cool off road Terrain better to drive up north and come down south the drive is easy and clear for the most part will need 4x4 , the tunnel and camp are really cool just follow the road numbered 15 and you'll get to the tunnel

Ok so this trail needs a real review as the skill level needed for this if driving a vehicle is seriously lacking. If trying to complete this in a 4x4 you will not make it. Part of it is closed to motorized vehicles from mile marker 6-8. The other issue is the amount of soft sand will be a real issue. Make sure you travel with another vehicle this is not a solo route. I would only recommend an OHV for this trail because on the return the route is very narrow with steep inclines that would challenge even a motorbike.

For the hiker this trail is very nice as it gradually increases in elevation gain. At mile 7 the incline rises very quickly and drops quickly presenting lots of PUDs (pointless ups and downs) until the end.

Lastly start this early or late do not attempt from 11-4 as this is a very hot trail with no shade no water. I even recommend 4 liters of water at a minimum.

I got off the trail early due to an injury.

Beautiful and desolate. Bring a map--it's easy to wander off trail by following the wash or other lost hikers attempting to find the tunnel. Trail branches off into several other trails in a dozen places. There are now fences and signs blocking this trail in some parts. Flat in the beginning, but there's some pretty consistent hills and valleys on the way back. Once we found the way back, trail was clearly marked.

The tunnel was pretty cool--amazing how one person with limited tools accomplished all that. A lot of people rode ATVs or 4WDs to the tunnel, so it got a little crowded there.

Fun tunnel but a bit too short. Hit my head and fell a few times as I'm a tall guy. The view at the end when you exit is truly amazing. Probably best to come here with an ATV or OHV.

I hiked from last chance canyon to the tunnel. Lots of hills. Lots of jeeps. Very exciting. The tunnel was shorter than I thought but still a tremendous feat for one man. Very jeep friendly area next time I will bring one.

This is a good hiking trail also. Damage from vehicles is unnoticable. It's a very nice canyon hike with lots of interesting rock formations. Mostly flat and a lot of soft sand to walk on.

Enjoyable trip today. Up from the Randsburg road, reasonable ground clearance and armor required. Most of the way is gravel creek bed, with a couple of rock gardens. Stock Jeep Wranglers can do it with a little care. Similar vehicles will have no problem. A couple of steep spots, one long one, a couple of twisty drops. No lockers required.
Side trips to Bickel Camp and Burro Schmidt Tunnel were interesting.

Five-mile loop trail in Red Rock Canyon State Park off Hwy. 14 north of Mojave, CA. is a fun, easy hike with rock-climbing or bouldering included. Winter time is optimum season to hike since there is no shade and it can get hot in the summer months. Wonderful rock formations, ravins and geological variations provide great photography opportunities.

Great trip, had a blast. We took a 72 bronco, 08 4 door rubicon, a stock Durango, and my very mild samurai. Went in off of rannsburg road from the south. The Durango made it in about 400 yards before it got too rocky. Had a blast took and we had 4 children under 7 and they all had a great time!! Definitely take a snack out it can be a long day.
