This trail is really fun. The first part is easy cruising DOWN the PCT on sand and is completely exposed. This is hot so plan ahead on temp and water. You will be hiking back UP the trail on the way back so plan accordingly. The actual butte is up a steep climb then requires open trail reading vs an established path. You must look for and follow the piles of rocks to guide you to the summit. If you do this it should be no problem. The views are amazing and it’s nice and cool up top.

Nobo 2014. Perfect trail and great people. Can I go back in time?

Late review - but hiked this end of May/early June and it was gorgeous and the weather was perfect. The trail was slightly overgrown and the flies were awful, but the view was worth it. Wear long sleeves and long pants for bugs and brush.

I picked a bad day to do this hike, it ended up being high 90s and by the time I got to the last 4.5 miles which appears to have a lot of elevation gain and no shade, I was down to half a liter of water so I had to take hauser creek road to a pickup spot. Pretty sure I would have suffered heat exhaustion if I had continued, so I played it safe.

Couldn’t start at the border because the whole area around there is restricted access/under construction. I started a few miles north instead, and am camping along the trail. Going to finish up the rest of the journey to lake morena tomorrow! :)

Love this trail, probably my favorite around SD. Can get pretty crowded on the weekends.

Started at the Southern Terminus and ended at where the trail crosses the 94. Approximately a little over 2 miles. Took 52 minutes with 4 adults and 3 kids ages 11-13. It was hot but manageable at 9am, however, earlier is better. Trail is mostly all exposed. Look for the trailer markers and a single track when the trail crosses the dirt road. There are construction roads for the border wall that partially obscure the trail markers. We were dropped off and picked up. There is no true parking lot at either locations. This was a 40th birthday celebration and bucket list cross off for the birthday girl.

It’s is super overgrown, pants and long sleevess is a must. Hauser Creek Rd has a gate that is locked, so no dropping off water for the whole 20 miles. Other than that is was an awesome trip with beautiful views even though I did it during a heat wave at 103 Fahrenheit. Bring LOTS OF WATER !!!

Good trail. Some shade but mostly exposed. Not sure I wouldn’t consider this ‘hard’ but more of a ‘moderate’ trail. Beautiful views on a clear day.

We got to the trailhead around 7:15 and were done at 11:15, so it took us almost exactly 4 hours with a nice break at the top. If we had started any later it would have been too hot and exposed - as it was the way down was pretty scorching (probably around 90), and we each ended up drinking around 3 liters of water. Great views at the top and we didn’t have any bugs!

Great challenging hike in early July. It was warm, but we expected that. There was a swarm of flying ants (?) at the top of Morena Butte. The creek on the backside had water and we filtered and filled up. 11 mile loop. I’d do it again in the Spring or Fall.

One of the best hikes in San Diego County. Start early- we started 0620. Bouldered up to what looked like the highest point with spectacular views, although peak not obvious. Couldn’t find coffee can with register. We actually didn’t notice the rock cairns on way up but from the ‘peak’ we saw rock cairns below on other side of the boulder conglomerate, so scrambled down and followed them to what we thought was another viewpoint. It turned out it was our path down. LOL. There were several groups of rock climbers. Their cars were parked at the T-junction. I suppose they had driven up Espinoza Trail and then the fire road. On return, the gnat flies were horrible last mile.

Great views at the top. Cairns saved out buts at the top on the slabs as we were off path a couple times As did the all trails app. We went down the part with the wire ropes as we started just outside the county park at that trailhead. and all I can say is Very Scary Perry !

It’s a pretty but tough trail that involves rock scrambling. The trail can be difficult to find so don’t go without a map and good navigation skills. Don’t rely on AllTrails mark up. Hot during summer, no shade, bring lots of water!
