This trail is really fun. The first part is easy cruising DOWN the PCT on sand and is completely exposed. This is hot so plan ahead on temp and water. You will be hiking back UP the trail on the way back so plan accordingly. The actual butte is up a steep climb then requires open trail reading vs an established path. You must look for and follow the piles of rocks to guide you to the summit. If you do this it should be no problem. The views are amazing and it’s nice and cool up top.

Late review - but hiked this end of May/early June and it was gorgeous and the weather was perfect. The trail was slightly overgrown and the flies were awful, but the view was worth it. Wear long sleeves and long pants for bugs and brush.

I picked a bad day to do this hike, it ended up being high 90s and by the time I got to the last 4.5 miles which appears to have a lot of elevation gain and no shade, I was down to half a liter of water so I had to take hauser creek road to a pickup spot. Pretty sure I would have suffered heat exhaustion if I had continued, so I played it safe.

Couldn’t start at the border because the whole area around there is restricted access/under construction. I started a few miles north instead, and am camping along the trail. Going to finish up the rest of the journey to lake morena tomorrow! :)

HikingGreat!

Love this trail, probably my favorite around SD. Can get pretty crowded on the weekends.

this trail starts at the Pacific crest trail Lake Morena trailhead. it was very well maintained and marked as far as where the trail was but it didn't say Marina butte trail, it just said Pacific Crest Trail on the sign. we hiked out and back for 2 1/2 hours. not sure how many miles we did or what trail we were on but we started at the PCT Lake Morena trailhead. followed the directions and it took us here. we are camped at Lake Morena so really easy to get to.

Started at the Southern Terminus and ended at where the trail crosses the 94. Approximately a little over 2 miles. Took 52 minutes with 4 adults and 3 kids ages 11-13. It was hot but manageable at 9am, however, earlier is better. Trail is mostly all exposed. Look for the trailer markers and a single track when the trail crosses the dirt road. There are construction roads for the border wall that partially obscure the trail markers. We were dropped off and picked up. There is no true parking lot at either locations. This was a 40th birthday celebration and bucket list cross off for the birthday girl.

It’s is super overgrown, pants and long sleevess is a must. Hauser Creek Rd has a gate that is locked, so no dropping off water for the whole 20 miles. Other than that is was an awesome trip with beautiful views even though I did it during a heat wave at 103 Fahrenheit. Bring LOTS OF WATER !!!

Good trail. Some shade but mostly exposed. Not sure I wouldn’t consider this ‘hard’ but more of a ‘moderate’ trail. Beautiful views on a clear day.

We got to the trailhead around 7:15 and were done at 11:15, so it took us almost exactly 4 hours with a nice break at the top. If we had started any later it would have been too hot and exposed - as it was the way down was pretty scorching (probably around 90), and we each ended up drinking around 3 liters of water. Great views at the top and we didn’t have any bugs!

HikingOff trailRocky

This was a great trail I recommend I brought 2 liters of water and ran out 3/4 of the way so I recommend 3-4 liters of water. I also made the mistake of wearing shorts, don’t do that, wear pants... Overgrown but only in a few select places overall the PCT is clear and easy to follow with markings with rocks cleverly placed all the way to the butte. Unfortunately, I got lost at the top and couldn’t figure out the way to the summit and with my water almost gone decided to turn back and go the way I came. If you decide to follow the trail with the PCT as your return path back, a good amount of shade as the sun sets behind the mountain.

Super fun trail with a nice campground when the driving is over. Went off the main trail it can get a little tricky did a riverbed needed 4L and front and rear lockers but was super fun and beautiful! Had a great day!

Of all the places I've been so far, this is absolutely my favorite! However, if you were to just follow the mapped out trail on here, you would be in for a disappointing 30 minute drive. We took the outer loop trail which is about moderate. You can stay in 4 high the entire time no problem. There are lots of offshoot trails for various sized vehicles. The main offshoot for 4 wheeled vehicles is very tight from overgrowth. But the main loop is a lot of fun, pretty views, not too difficult in a 4runner with K/O 2s and a stock suspension.
