Amazing hike, lake view is a gem
We spent 2h to the trail end (do not stop at the lake, make it till the end, the view is fascinating)
And a bit more than an 1h to the way down as we didn’t have enough time and had to rush
I would say It is a 3 part hike, forest, open space (bring hat), elevation, the last one for sure is the difficult one, but is very manageable
4h of good pace would be the time to get to the lake, chill and enjoy, and get back

A beautiful hike. The mid section was in full sun & it got a bit hot, especially for our dog but it was 100% worth it when you got to the lake. Absolutely stunning!
We hiked on a holiday weekend so I was worried the trail would be packed but once you got past the hustle at Mono Village the trail was relatively people free. (The people we did meet were extremely friendly.)

Good trail for the family. If going out & back in the same day, go early as the pastures have very little shade and it’s gets hot in the afternoon.

Fairly easy, pretty hike.

Beautiful views!

Beautiful hike even with the Smokey skies. Passed maybe 20 people - but had the Lake to ourselves when we arrived. Great hike with my 12yr old son in 4.5 hours at a nice, steady pace.

Moderate hike with a beautiful view of the lake!! Don’t forget your camera!!

Loved Bodie! Awesome ghost town with lots to see!

Easy to follow trail set in a beautiful valley leading up to Barney Lake. The remaining snow on the peaks right now makes for a fantastic view.

I have been on this trail numerous times and it never gets old. So much to see!!

This trail is by far one of my favorite places. Taking advantage of the unusually warm weather, I took my three boys up there yesterday. Just a few patches of snow on the trail, and yes, Barney is frozen over. It was a beautiful day. Ran into a few cross-country skiers wondering where the snow was. We need that snow for sure! I highly recommend continuing up the trail (tough climb) into Peeler Lake - a great place to camp.

Small amounts of snow on trail- some areas a little slick- 3 tiny stream crossings (nothing a little hop skip can't get you over). Great for being FEBRUARY!

Had a beautiful day with weather around 55 in the end of December! Small patches of snow and ice, but no problem to walk through. Lake was frozen and beautiful!!! Great hike:)

Hiked this on the 9th of November 2017. There is no snow on the trail until almost 9000 ft and even then the snow is minimal. There are plenty of places to hike on the way up crown but I recommend pushing all the way to crown. The lake is gorgeous and worth the trip. We were the only people on the lake due to the time of year which made it even better. It got cold at night but not unbearable. This was by far one of the best backpacking experiences I've had in the Sierras. The trail is easy to follow and not too strenuous.

The aspens are in peak right now and this is an exceptional year for color. Don't let the distance stop you. This hike is relatively flat except the last mile which is gradual switchback.

Great backpacking sites at Crown lake. This trail is very underrated in comparison to trails in Yosemite. Wonderful hike and backpacking trip

The view at Barney Lake is well worth the trip. Beautiful hike along the trail too

Spent 1 night at Peeler Lake, and the next on the ridge above Snow Lake. Incredibly beautiful area, fantastic trail, lots of mosquitos, would definitely return.

Amazing off road drive at 9200' elevation. Just drive out of Bodie through the back exit. The dirt road starts to climb immediately but it’s no problem for any average four wheel drive vehicle. No one around but you and your friends and family. We did not see a single soul for 2 hours. Beautiful untouched scenery. It's an easy 4x4 drive. Only a couple small creeks that were not very deep to cross. No snow on the trail but there was some up a little higher in elevation. Totally worth the drive!!!

Hi Jimmy / Stephanie, I am thinking of backpacking this weekend into Barney Lake and then onwards to Peeler Lake, if you can share the trail condition, that'll be much appreciated, is it covered in snow, wet, or ?

Thanks in advance.

Hiked this trail every summer for 20 years! Ever since before I was born my family has been camping at Annett's Mono Village! My favorite spot in the world and this trail is always a great family day hike!

Stumbled upon this beauty while fishing the Upper and Lower Twins for the first time in my float tube. Wow, I followed the switchbacks for one or two turns and then followed what I hear being called a water fall, but right now it is a raging torrent down the side of the mountain (Sorry US Forest Service). I got back on the trail and made it to the meadow at the top, which reminded me a lot of day hiking in Tuolumne Meadows. Pretty steep grade going up, but relatively easy enough for most. Beautiful wildflowers, didn't see another soul, human or animal big enough to be concerned with. Did see some trout up high where the water was moving much slower. Still time to see the snow melt. I would take people there to show them God's work. Amen

Great trail. Lots of snow about the last half mile from the lake. Still very cold at night.

Great Hike. Lots of streams to navigate due to snow melt. The meadow portions of the trail were very soggy, and good amount of snow at the end of the trail... Any tennis shoe wearers had wet feet. Slight incline the majority of the way, then lots of switchbacks through large hillside thicket all the way up to the lake. Barney was still half frozen on Memorial Day Weekend 2017. Not a large shore area since the lake is so full, but we were able to find some fallen trees to relax on and enjoy the view.

This is a great trail! Nice gradual climb, not too strenuous and beautiful scenery. A good portion of the hike was very wet so I recommend some waterproof shoes. I forgot my gortex hiking shoes and was fine doing it in Nike Frees but my feet were soaked for most of the hike.

So unique and awesome! No service and a long drive on a dirt road getting in, but really cool. Restrooms, water and small gift shop at site. Gotta check it out!!!
