Lost GPX file so had to draw it out. Much more strenuous than the 17 miles (GPX file read ~25 miles) and 5000 vertical feet described. First and last 6 miles (on trail up to Lamarck Col and down from Muriel Lake) are fine but everything in between is scrambling, talus, shale, route finding. All class 3, sometimes having to take off packs etc. Still worth it for the views of Darwin Canyon if you don't have time for the 55 mile North Lake to South Lake loop. Doable in 3 days but don't underestimate the route finding/talus/boulder fields.

Finished in 2014 what I started in 2012. A "must do" for any backpackers' bucket list

We went today 12.09.2017, the trail was covered with snow and the lakes were frozen. The trail was nice, it gives you great views and the silence around was amazing.

Such a beautiful area. I would set camp up somewhere sun would hit first in the morning. Lots of camping options on soft ground. It took me a few hours to thaw all my stuff out, but scenery was worth it

I did this stretch in mid June of 15'. We did go further though. The hike from South Lake to where the switchbacks start up to Bishop pass is actually pretty moderate. Follows the lakes and isn't super steep. But the switches up to the pass are. Encountered a few drifts of snow in the upper sections but nothing bad. Over the pass and camped in Dusy Basin the first night. Then down to the bottom of Le Conte Canyon the next day and up river to Big Pete's meadow for the next night. The third day was up to Muir Pass, and it was a slog. Mileage wise it didn't seem like much, but walking wise it did. Just one of those days I suppose. Went down to Wanda Lake to spend our 3rd night. This was to be a loop hike as well but didn't pan out that way. We went as far as McClure meadow, which is absolutely beautiful. Evolution Basin is awesome too. Evolution creek thru McClure meadow is something to see. One of the most scenic stretches of the PCT/JMT.

I recently completed a backpacking trip along the John Muir Trail. The scenery is amazing. If this isn't the most beautiful long-distance trail in the country, it has to be on the short list. I started at the Cottonwood Pass campground and hiked northbound. It took two days to reach the JMT from the Cottonwood Pass area. My entire trip ended up being around 240 miles long.

Videos of each day can be found on my YouTube channel. I also have some videos about the gear I used and food I packed on the trip. A link to the video for day one is posted below. Mt. Whitney is day three if you want to jump to that one. I just posted day 11, which was in the Selden Pass area. This was the most beautiful area on the trail in my opinion. Enjoy!

Very hard. Be prepared.

The trail is nice, with beautiful wild flowers along the trail, most of the lakes were dry, its kind of strenuous trail, dont try if you're not fit, a lot of steep and rocky area, going back is easy its all down. Runners on the trail so lookout for them.. they're fast. Just have fun and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Fell into a life long love of mountains when I first encountered the Rockies, only to have them redefined by the Sierras a year later. I knew I had to come back for this trail and in 2014, I conquered it.

This might be the most beautiful trail in the country and should not be missed. Logistics and challenge together make for the greatest test for reward and beauty. Highly recommended if you need to change your life in any capacity, and we could all change a little.
