Great views and it helped having trees for shade when we needed it. We got up partial way in our car and hiked the rest. Volunteer rangers at the top were really friendly and loved talking about the terrain. I highly recommend this hike.

Nice hike. More easy than moderate. Many people seen wearing only very simple shoes. Than it can't be very difficult. Great views but the lake disappointed a little.

I love this....

Great trail, well constructed and maintained. A push for this 71 yr old

Fun hike, great views.

I did a shorter version of this hike (5.7 miles total) that begins at the junction of Polique Canyon Road and the PCT (as described in John Robinson's "San Bernardino Mountain Trails" book and by other reviewers on this page).

In addition to a shorter overall distance, my route from the PCT to the summit was slightly different from what's shown on this page. At around 2.3 miles, I hiked west on an overgrown road (shown as 3N80 on this map) to a use trail that travels south to the summit. This entire section from the PCT to the summit is the hardest part of the hike, as it's very steep and the trail is faint. There are ribbons and cairns that guide you though.

The view from the summit (a pile of rocks) isn't that great, so follow the ribbons south of the summit about 100 yards to a lower outcropping of rocks. The view from there is incredible.

Super easy trail. Don’t even need 4wd. Just a standard truck with decent ground clearance can make it through if you keep the momentum going on the longer rocky parts.

Very easy trail with nice views. 4wd not necessary.

Great little training hike with a steady incline. Very rocky the majority of the time so wear appropriate shoes. A vehicle with nominal clearance can make it to the trailhead or add a mile to your hike and park at the road. The actual summit doesn't have a panoramic view but if you head toward the rocks (toward San Gorgonio) theres some sweet look out points. Added a waypoint to my track for a good lookout fort in the rocks.

This one is a great family hike. Very kid friendly. Incline is not bad at all and trail is well traveled.

Awesome trail for beginners! Made it up no problem with stock 4x4 4Runner with all terrain tires. The volunteer at the tower said rains from a couple weeks ago rutted our the trail more than usual. Great viewpoints and so glad we checked it out while in big bear. Trail can get tight and by all the reviews seems it is pretty popular. Luckily we didn’t see one person going either way on a early Friday morning.

Great trail with great views! Also take it slow around the sharp turns since it gets pretty narrow

Great Hike!!! Not to steep. Terrain was a little rocky.

good hike with great views from the peak. very steep near the top. my dog also liked it.

Was a great little hike. Remarkable beautiful views. Love this place.

Nice but more of a road than a trail for the majority of the distance. Not terribly well marked and easy to get off on an alternate route. The last 1/4 to 1/2 mike is very steep.

Great hike with great scenery. Perfect thing to do while camping at Serrano campground. Approximately .7 miles from the campground to the trailhead. Need an adventure pass to park there if you are driving.

Did Sugarloaf this morning and it was a hell of a hike. got to the top in 2hr 45min with a lot of breaks in between. great views on the way to the top and lots of shade too, which is good considering it's been a hot summer up here. definitely bring lots of water with you on this hike. it's always good to be safe.

Excellent hike from the base gate up.
Take the time and talk with the volunteers in the tower. They have a lot of great area information and can point out some great sites to see.

Definitely a “moderate”, not an “easy”. Dirt road to access was fine in our regular car as we took it slow, a lot of potholes but they weren’t too deep. Parked on a small pull out just before PCT. Really nice trail but a lot of steep climbing on a dirt road (especially near the top). The PCT options made it much nicer lower down. 4miles rt.

Love this trail.. JKU 3.5” lift with 35’s no lockers

My college friend took me and another friend who were both visiting from out of state on this hike. Was a great morning hike to experience the area and see the lake from above. We did see a rattlesnake (second time my friend has on this trail), so keep your eyes peeled near the rocky spots and your dogs close!

What a trail! Fun, rocky trail with some great inclines and large, sharp rocks that require a little skill to maneuver. Absolutely stunning views of the surrounding area too that you just can't beat. The first half of the trail is certainly the harder part because it's relatively smooth sailing once you get to the clearing. We did this trail in lifted tacomas but stock tires (Goodyear Wrangler). Definitely passable for stock height vehicles but 4wd is definitely a must since there's no possible way to turn around if you get stuck on the trail. Trail is very narrow on the edge of some large cliffs most of the way so be careful and pick good lines. Check out my video for a detailed report.

This was a great hike. It took us about hours to the top. The is a little rocky at times, but was hardly any trouble. The first mile has a lot of gnats and flies due to the streams, but you quickly gain 1000' and they are no longer a problem after that. We saw some bear prints but no luck in seeing an actual bear. We sat at peak for some time and were amazed at the numerous butterflies floating about, even saw a blue bird. It's a tough trek, but so worth it!

Use this trail to go on Pacific coast trail

Just did Butler Peak this morning. Very beautiful hike all the way up to the peak. Nice gradual climb, nothing too crazy. Once you're up, amazing views of Arrowhead, Big bear, Snow valley, and the High desert.

Fun trail, some of which becomes hard to follow the higher you go up. Thankfully, it's easy to stay on course because of the blazes in the trees. I did encounter a black bear on Wildhorse Meadow Road just after exiting the Sugarloaf trail on my way down. It ended peacefully (the wonderful creature wandered off after a few minutes), but it may be helpful brush up on what you should do when you come face to face with bears in the area.

I did Bertha Peak about week or so ago for the first time, and it was a good hike up until you get to the climb for Bertha itself and then it becomes challenging. definitely a good workout and climb, and the view of the lake once you're up there is pretty badass. definitely recommended.
