Looking for a place to take our Renegade and found this trail mentioned several times while in Big Bear. Pretty easy trail with places to stop and see some history. Had a lot of fun and would do it again if we return to the area.

Great views and it helped having trees for shade when we needed it. We got up partial way in our car and hiked the rest. Volunteer rangers at the top were really friendly and loved talking about the terrain. I highly recommend this hike.

Super easy trail. Don’t even need 4wd. Just a standard truck with decent ground clearance can make it through if you keep the momentum going on the longer rocky parts.

Fun, simple trail with some pretty cool history behind it. Be sure to grab the Gold Fever pamphlet/map at the discovery center to follow along the trail and read about the trails history.

Awesome trail for beginners! Made it up no problem with stock 4x4 4Runner with all terrain tires. The volunteer at the tower said rains from a couple weeks ago rutted our the trail more than usual. Great viewpoints and so glad we checked it out while in big bear. Trail can get tight and by all the reviews seems it is pretty popular. Luckily we didn’t see one person going either way on a early Friday morning.

Great trail with great views! Also take it slow around the sharp turns since it gets pretty narrow

Excellent hike from the base gate up.
Take the time and talk with the volunteers in the tower. They have a lot of great area information and can point out some great sites to see.

Love this trail.. JKU 3.5” lift with 35’s no lockers

What a trail! Fun, rocky trail with some great inclines and large, sharp rocks that require a little skill to maneuver. Absolutely stunning views of the surrounding area too that you just can't beat. The first half of the trail is certainly the harder part because it's relatively smooth sailing once you get to the clearing. We did this trail in lifted tacomas but stock tires (Goodyear Wrangler). Definitely passable for stock height vehicles but 4wd is definitely a must since there's no possible way to turn around if you get stuck on the trail. Trail is very narrow on the edge of some large cliffs most of the way so be careful and pick good lines. Check out my video for a detailed report.

Just did Butler Peak this morning. Very beautiful hike all the way up to the peak. Nice gradual climb, nothing too crazy. Once you're up, amazing views of Arrowhead, Big bear, Snow valley, and the High desert.

Stock 2017 JKUR HR can do this with a little rock stacking. Trail is mostly flat, 4 or 5 semi challenging obstacles. Couple scratches on the gas tank skid plate.

Not really a fan. A couple of moderately difficult step ups early on but this whole trail is nothing but rock. Not the challenging types of rocks, just rocks. And more rocks. To the extent that we just turned around at about the half way point cause it just wasn’t fun. Relentless rock bumps that just got old fast. As I mentioned, we didn’t do the whole trail so it’s possible that it gets better further up but I don’t think so.

Fun, but not too challenging road that lead to incredible views.

Great trail. Some minor challenges without lockers in a lifted 17’ JKU with 35” tires. Really only would have engaged them once but a little bump and we were up and over.

Amazing views!! road is currently blocked so looking at around a 6-7 mile hike up then back down. Not for the faint hearted but absolutely worth it! incredible views and got it all to ourselves it was perfect.

Honestly this is one of my favorite hikes around Big Bear. Went up yesterday, about 10 miles. Parked at the blocked gate at the end of Rim of the World rd for free. Beautiful views, well maintained fire lookout. Chilly and windy up top but SO worth the view! Still some snow on the trail but won’t last long.

I was hoping Jacoby would be open as its a fun trail, but like someone else said, it's now gated off at the top by the Transfer Station and Doble Mine. Sucks, that was one of my favorite trails too...

Great off road trail with two harder obstacles. Took 3 hours with photo ops taking our time. Moving time was 1.5 hours.

Took the butler peak trail. Trail running. Closed to cars. Amazing. Soft. Lil snowy. Epic views. And the tower. Just an incredible end to 5 miles up. Loved it.

Drove my 4x4 Jeep to the fork then proceeded another 3 miles ahead. Nice trail for off-roading. Recommend 4x4 with lift. We we’re looking for somewhere with snow. Didn’t find much. Will try again next year.

Beautiful intermediate trail, can be done stock Jeep if very careful. I recommend a lift and you’ll need 4x4.

This trail has been closed after the fire in June 2017. It will be closed to all activity for up to 10 years. Closed from Doble Mine (3N16) to Hwy 18.

I conquered this with the help from an off road crew of great guys!
I have a stock JKU 4 door and made it by going slow and easy!
Beautiful trail and the rocks are amazing sounding as you ride over them! It’s surreal!

Beautiful trail and nice technical skills practice. We had a stock JK Sahara (no lift) a nicely tuned FJ Cruiser, a Taco with small lift and body armor and my K5. Taco and JK were the ones who rubbed on the rocks most, but no problem making the trail. My K5 was a little wide for some parts, but made it through fine due to short wheel base at tight locations. I never rubbed any sliders or bumpers (4" lift on 35s) I'll be back to this one and try to enjoy the beautiful view and take some pictures next time.
