Great for running! A lot of people, but spacious enough to not get within 6 feet. You do run by some peoples’ tent homes, so be respectful of their space (no creepy vibes during my run in the daytime).

HikingGreat!

Steep in some parts with amazing views. Lots of loose rock on some of the downhill sections, would strongly recommend boots to help avoid twisting your ankle

HikingGreat!

This trail just goes straight up. It’s like one minute you are in your car and the next you are practically crawling up a wall of dirt on your hands and knees. Beryl and I could only make small talk at first as we gasped for air, but after a mile it was like we gave up on the idea that the land would ever again be horizontal, accepting that this was just what we did now. We would probably die here. So Beryl started talking about how she’d gone on antidepressants during Covid. I told her that Lexapro has fewer sexual side effects than Celexa, just something to consider. We were at about 2 miles when we started talking about our childhoods. The trail levels out here with some rollers as you approach a road. We got all kinds of lost trying to find the right trail at this point but finally got pointed the right direction when Beryl was sharing how she had been convinced at a pre teen that she had been abused as a child, but that the memory just hadn’t surfaced yet, and that she would also turn out to be an abuser. These types of baseless anxieties continued to plague her into young adulthood. I told her that my parents had been so unhappy about having the responsibility of kids that I worried I too would be a terrible parent. At this point a couple of hikers approaching from the other direction asked us what the trail led to. We stared at them blankly. What had we seen? Finally I said, “...a road?” We pushed on. The trail widens as it descends, and if you’re hiking in the morning, this portion is much more shaded. Go left instead of right at the bottom of the steep incline and talk about how hiking is literally the only thing you’ve been doing with friends during Covid. Worry that you will end up hating hiking when this is over. You’ll be walking down a narrow street in the Berkeley Hills until you come to a turnoff than takes you down some stairs. The view is insane. Beryl and I again turned the wrong way passing something called “The Rock” which is sadly not “The Rock,” though there was a guy in front of us hiking with no shirt on and his abs were just unfair. I don’t even remember the last mile, you’d think we’d been hiking for 12 hours without food or water and that I’d blacked out from fatigue the way my memory just completely lapses here. There was hot, shirtless guy, the trail descending down and down, words were said, there were some dogs, and suddenly I was back in my car on a residential street as if nothing had happened, so disorienting. 4 stars.

Just a fire trail that is being maintenanced, so crap every where. Long hill (.5 ml) at the beginning and some pretty views of the SF Bay and Oakland.

people watching: on the way up, only noticed 1 person without a mask. on the way down I counted: 61 people 13 without a mask (or without a mask all the way on) 6 of whom seemed unconcerned 2 of whom were mid photoshoot and may not have noticed me 5 of whom seemed guilty and/it tried to cover or look away note that all but two of the 61 we're headed up the very very steep trail, so it's easy to understand not covering up. plus, this is a very wide trail. still those 6 seemed pretty thoughtless.

Great for a short workout with views. The first half can get some traffic, but once we got passed the paved road to the second half, there was minimal traffic. The views during the ascent were amazing. Chaparral Peak anticlimactic however because the views are blocks by greenery. I recommend extending the hike a little more to go to Grizzly Peak for the rewarding views. That would be a 5 star hike for me.

Nice, easy-ish hike with access to parking right after the intersection of Grizzly Peak Blvd and Golf Course Drive. That said, the hike pathway gets real choppy at the Gillespie picnic area and the Laurel picnic area. We lost the trail right after Laurel and eventually stumbled into the golf course and used the golf cart paths to circle back.
