Long trail, take snacks and plenty of water. A very diverse trail with many different views and plant life and rocks.

The 1st 2 miles in are a shit show, trash everywhere, zero hiking etiquette and again fucking trash everywhere. Got there around 630am regular parking lot was full so just parked in a Designated area! (holy cow people just parked wherever they want). The hike itself isn't that challenging it's finding the correct path once you split from the bridge to nowhere trail. lots of river crossing so bring extra socks or water shoes. My group of 5 got there around 930am with no one insight! the fall itself is beautiful and cold . We took some pictures, snacked, and then left overall maybe 45mins spent there. I didn't see to much trash at the fall mainly just orange peels, people did carve into the trees in front of the falls which angers me greatly. when leaving we did see 2 other groups heading towards the fall, idk they actually found it tho. My advice, get there early early early early!

Overall I really enjoyed this trail! Parked at about 7:30a on a Sat, and the lot outside the trailhead was almost full!! The views were amazing, and the trail was busy and full of the kindest people. The only thing I underestimated was how over grown the last 1.5 mi of the trail really was. There was barely room to walk in some parts as the bushes completely took over the trail. The bushes were full of bees and other buzzing bugs, so i would recommend bug spray. Not much shade on the trail, and a bit rocky along windy gap. It's easy to miss the trail from Islip to Windy so keep your eyes peeled. Note: the trail to crystal lake from the bottom of windy takes you along a fire road for a short while. Keep your eyes peeled once again, because it is extremely !! Easy to miss the trail head for crystal lake. I had to double back twice because i missed it.

The western half of this loop deserves 5 stars, but the eastern half struggles to get 3. The western half is a well maintained trail with constant views and frequent wildflowers this time of year. On the eastern side, the Lost Ridge Trail is overgrown with low-hanging thorny bushes and was buggy while I was there. It also features stretches on dirt and paved roads. This hike could be done as an overnight trip by extending the trail a mile to the Little Jimmy Campground. I would do the loop in a counter-clockwise direction if backpacking so you don't have all of the elevation gain on one day. Despite the so-so trail on the eastern half, the views are great and the route easy to follow.

Please people, pick up your garbage, it is very sad to see these beautiful places full of garbage, please be more aware, let's keep these beautiful places clean !!

Good trail but the bugs were really hard to deal with.

We completed the hike on Saturday 5/23/20. The difficulty of this hike is not overstated. As for the hike distance, I tracked the hike on my Gamin GPS and it showed 14.5 miles round trip from the parking lot, not 12.6! The last 3-miles going up is basically straight up with loose soil/rocks which is what makes this hike difficult. I was able to walk the entire trail without using my hands but the others in my group crawled up and down some sections. The steep sections are slow going up and down. We also saw 2 rattle snakes sunning on the trail and had to run them off with rocks. The advise below to carry 5-liters of water is accurate and start early (sunrise) to avoid the heat in warmer periods. I definitely recommend this hike for anyone looking for a challenge but don't make this your first 14+ mile all day hike otherwise you may also need a headlamp to find your way back.

Gorgeous trail great views from the top! From the desert to the ocean. The last part of the loop after the campground was a little overgrown so we took the road back to the windy gap trail which added 1.5 miles.

This was our first time out to this trail. It has the potential to be great—beautiful scenery, shady trail, river to cool off in—unfortunately, it was insanely crowded and trashed. Not sure if it was Covid fever or the holiday weekend but people, tents and food covered the riverbanks. Not a lot of mask wearing or social distancing. Tons of cars, people drinking. If you’re looking for a party then it’s perfect.

Arrived about 7a on a Friday and got the last parking spots in the lot. Lots of space to hike but so much trash. I could not believe the disrespect people have for our outdoor spaces. Pack out what you pack in- if not don’t go! There was trash all over the roads, the trail, and bathrooms. The trail was great. Took our time and relaxed at the falls. Unfortunately, it got packed on our way out of the falls. By the time we finished and headed out the lot was full and parking was piled down the side of the road for about 2 miles.
