Hiking

I thru-hiked the whole trail, except for the first two miles - which I’ll be going back to finish soon - in October of 2020. It’s a beautiful trail, and most of the water crossings have bridges. Be prepared for a lot of rocks on the Oklahoma side. The winding stair campground does NOT have water, and I was told that they had stopped running the water to the campground a long time ago. The bathrooms were locked, due to COVID, but there are trash cans in the main campground area. The state line area was very overgrown, with weeds over my head (I’m 5’5). The section a couple miles before the Turner Gap shelter was just as overgrown, except the addition of thorns and briars made it much worse than the state line area. Overall, the trail was pretty well maintained, and some of the older shelters are being renovated. You really can’t go wrong picking any section for a day hike on any part of this trail. No matter which section I was hiking, there was always something beautiful or interesting to see. It’s definitely not a trail for the out of shape, though. These may not be the Rocky Mountains, but they can be pretty tough just the same!

WalkingGreat!

Great trail! It is a little longer than the description but fairly easy to walk and beautiful views of the woods and some rock formations! Good little workout and doable for everyone! Well marked too!

I like the trail but it was a lot longer than I thought. On here it says 2.3 miles but the full base trail is 3.5 miles. I took my mom out there and she could only do half of it with her bad knees so I had to finish with the dogs and pick her up. Lots of boulders and steeper parts. Won’t be taking my chiweenie there again. But I do like the trail just wasn’t expecting it to be so long.

HikingGreat!

I would say this hike is a easy to medium hike. Limited parking though. Great hike. This hike is actually a bunch of little trails so it can be broke up so families can hike it just fine. When I hiked it today there we kids 4-5 years old on the hike doing just fine.

I totally understand the confusion on following the trails. I’m about a moderate hiker and have done both well marked and none. A map is available at the start. The map it helps to give you the right idea of the trail your on. And can easily tell which is a trail vs and service trail. This app helped a lot to get an idea which direction to go but definitely not able to “follow” and trail like normal. Had cell service the whole time with sprint and few scatter people around. Was not worried about being lost and never finding my way again but not well mark or trail head throughout. It was still a very nice hike and liked it.

HikingGreat!

Excellent trail for kids and family. Plenty of shade, not hard. Fixed small rocks at times, but nothing requiring hiking poles or hiking boots.

Great trail, very easy to follow and the gorge is worth it! Very well maintained. Otherwise, the stretch from hwy 7 to Oak Mountain shelter is uneventful.

We’ve done this trail several times. I like to hike more than climb rocks so we go for the base trail and it provides a nice hike. Trail could be better marked as we took a trail that went down by river by accident.

Love this trail! It was very shady and lots of benches if you need to rest. I brought my 2 dogs which I probably wouldn’t bring my chiweenie again as there are a lot of big rocks I had to carry her over. I think it’s probably better for big dogs, but they still did ok.

Beautiful trail that is very nicely prepared for mountain bikers. Solid running spot with lots of nice elavation changes. Parking lot is very small and can fill up on weekends.

Great trail, the kids who are 7 and 10 loved it..the only problem was that the trails are not marked well, but the map provided at the entreat entrance helped. Will be going back for sure.

Great casual trail. Not a lot of up and down. Really good if you want an easy stroll through the woods.
