Rewarding views around every turn! I started on the southern loop on day 2 but it was an exhausting series of switchbacks so I went back and explored the northern section again. Has everything! Towering bluffs, gurgling creek, plenty of camping spots, 200’ cliff/waterfall (if running). Even a creepy old cabin. Lots of hikers and horses on the northern section but it didn’t feel crowded. Peaceful, serene. I’d go every weekend if I could. Trail was poorly marked in several crucial areas. Expect to cross the river several times.

Awesome kayaking trip. Two nights prior, I camped out in a cave on Big Bluff, whose views were spectacular. You could see it from the river on the way to Kyle’s Landing. Big Bluff is around 500 ft up, I believe.

Good float for our experienced Boy Scouts (in Spring! )

Did Ponca to Kyles Landing on the upper Buffalo, 10.6 miles. Great stretch of water, very scenic, many bluffs, winding river, very remote. Some nice white water, up to a class 3 when we were there, normally up to class 2. This stretch has to be floated in the spring. Your lucky to be able to float this after the first of June. Came back on a second trip and did from Pruit to Hastings, another 7 miles. This route also take you past the tallest waterfall in the state. You can beach the kayaks and hike to the falls from the river.

This was a very nice loop. It was our first time backpacking and it was a good trail for that. Pretty well mart except for coming out of Kyle‘s landing was a little bit confusing as The GPS did not follow the trail.
Overall I would definitely do this again.
