Trail down from the fire watch tower is non-existent. Totally burned out and needs re-cut. Take the dirt road up instead.

My wife and I hiked the trail on April 1, 2018, and we found the trail to be moderate to hard. There were a lot of areas damaged by the fire, which made it very hard to follow the trail. We had to climb over fallen trees and washed out areas. In some places, the trail was impossible to locate, and we were only navigating by GPS, but the views ARE stunning.

A relatively short hike on a well maintained trail. Not near as strenuous as it looks from the bottom. Worth the views over the canyon.

Pretty quick up and down. Payoff at the top is fantastic--views of valleys and canyons for miles around. Kids enjoyed the feeling of getting to the top.

Lots of shade at the beginning. Great canopies of oak and juniper trees.

Very nice at sunset. The rock formations are worth the trip. It was a bit crowded however. Morning sun might be s good time to view the rocks.

Only the first 35 yards of this trail exist today. This area was logged during the winter of 2016-17 and most of the trail has been destroyed.

This hike should be rated as moderate/difficult because it is not easy. A few very short stretches of somewhat flat grades are a relief, but mostly it is a thigh-buster if you're going all the way down to Oak Flat which is 4 miles in. Lots of reliable water from the easily accessible -roaring- creek which you cross a handful of times along the way. So if you want to save some water weight in your pack, know that you can take your filter and refill in several areas. This hike takes you through very lush forest with the sound of the creek to accompany you, and a chance to see wildlife due to very light traffic. Very beautiful!

Really short but cool trail. You get to go through a small man-made tunnel, which was a surprise. The view on top is incredible. Awesome view of the monument park in addition to the valley and nearby mountains.

I'd venture to say it's the best trail in the park.

Cool place. Check out Balanced Rock.

Also recommend hiking a ways into the canyon. It's a different experience seeing the rock spires tower above you.

Took the shuttle from the Visitor Center to the top and hiked down the following trails: Ed Riggs, Mushroom Rock, Inspiration Point, Big Balanced Rock, Heart of Rocks Loop, Sarah Deming, and Lower Rhyolite Canyon. This was a beautiful hike up and down across the canyons with some outstanding rock formations and forests along the way. We ended up back at the Visitor Center where our car was parked.
LENGTH: 8.5 miles

Beautiful views for sure. We took our grandchildren up this trail. They really enjoyed it and especially enjoyed the ranger who was at the top. She took a lot of time with them. Awesome views!

Very enjoyable easy hike with 2 rewarding vistas, plump lizards and a plethora of fungi. Great for our three boys (11, 8 + 8).

It's one of those short jaunts to move you from one parking lot to another. If you have kids, there's some information you might like along the trail and it's easy.

Nice hiking trail. unfortunately, the lower part of the trail is littered with downed trees and overgrowth. Dangerous along the rocky slopes.
With that said, it is very good hike with lots of great views.

The Chiricahua mountain range is just beautiful, no matter what trail you are on. This hike is easy as long as you are not affected by the elevation. Make sure to bring lots of water! The views are astounding of some amazing volcanic rock formations that are great to climb around on if you are into Bouldering at all. It is a steady climb that goes around the mountain until you reach the summit which is a ranger station, where they monitor wild fires from, in the summer time. I wouldn't want to get caught in a Monsoon up there, but if you do, there are some dugouts along the trail that could be used for shelter until the storm passes. I didn't see much animal life except for birds riding the wind which was pretty strong when I went, but there was some evidence of animals living up there. Keep your eyes peeled for a Coatimundi!
