I started hiking South Mountain in June and have loved every minute of it. From the steep climbs to flat ground, I definitely get a good workout. The views are incredible in the early morning hours.

It actually goes much further north

Nice challenge for a beginner level. The Classic Trail rocky terrain made it cool. I hiked today, while cloudy and windy.

I will definitely hike this again.

not much of a challenge.. had to jog it or venture off and go up mountain side without paths just to feel my heart rate increase. Over all pretty though.

Great hike, and beautiful scenery. We were able to enjoy a rare rainy day in June. I can't understand why people will not clean up after their dogs, the trail had alot of dog crap on it.

A good little trl. Pretty exposed.

It is a nice walk but half the trail is closed off at the moment due to construction =( The park is beautiful and there is fishing on the lake.

Loved this it was easy and fun

..this time i took my kids and their bikes in the evening to see how well they'll do on the paved trail..&& they actually did great..they enjoyed the mountain views and was happy they didn't ave to actually climb anything tonight..sn: they were knocked out sleep..being active has some great perks for parents..lol

Great park!! Fun place to explore, hike, and enjoy! Loved climbing the rocks for great views 360 degrees. Very busy on the weekends but park is big enough doesn’t matter.

It’s fun to rock climb the mountains

Pretty straight forward most part ... I really like this place it's beautiful!

Nice trails, but some construction going on, so part of the Big Loop is closed. No big deal... just walked a slightly shorter path.

I enjoyed my hike immensely. Not only was I surrounded by the beauty of the desert, I was able to challenge myself physically. I scrambled, jumped, ran, and climbed with a grin. It’s an active trail with lots of bikers so it’s best to keep your wits about you. Most people I passed were polite and the bikers were appreciative when I let them pass.

A nice confidence builder for people thinking of doing harder hikes in the area or just want to get outside. A nice compliment to visiting the botanical garden.

Challenging right from the start but got easier when you reached the ridge.

My limited experience with all trails in south mountain there are many mountain bikers. All have been friendly and courteous. Recommend leaving the headphones behind in order to hear bikers on trails.

Very nice walking path. Easy hike

Great hiking outing... I liked that you could very much personalize the difficulty that you want to accomplish. The official trail is super easy, almost flat, with great views around the bottom of the buttes. Now, I don’t know if it’s officially sanctioned to be able to go off the trail and climb up the buttes, but several hikers were and there were no signs saying not to. There are a myriad of unofficial-looking trails and ways to get up various parts of the buttes that provide a much more difficult (and fun) workout!

A great fitness hiking trail. Lots of people and dogs, sometimes coyotes. I love this trail, quick and easy access on days where there isn’t a lot of time to hike. My kiddo and dog love it too.

Great trail. Little bit of trash from other people.

I can’t see how this is rated “moderate” difficulty - it is a very straightforward granite path with minimal elevation changes. For what it is, it’s great, but it is more an in-town walking or jogging trail than a hike. You can hear and see cars (and often smell exhaust) and buildings around the entire thing.

The best cycling path in Pheonix/metro in my opinion. Slower pacing around the lake due to it's popularity but as soon as you get north of the lake you can open up on the peddles. The path skirts along three long and skinny golf courses and several parks for something interesting to look at for the duration of the ride.

90% of the trail opts to go under the roads rather than making you use the cross-walk so better flow to it, less stopping than the canal rides.

Connects to "Grand Canal" and "Arizona Canal".

great for running

Easy going trail...nice park to relax in after your work out..

I recommend this park as a quick getaway within the city of Tempe. It offers a short paved walk around the lake which is perfect for walks, jogs, low speed bicycle rides and is family friendly. It is fishing friendly.

Not fond of Papago. Just not a pleasant experience, decent trails but very dirty. There is even sections where groups of homeless live. Would do it if close. Y but not worth the trip there

BOLO coyotes

My poor rating is a direct result of all of the in different people that bring their dogs and do not clean up after them. Certain times of the year it smells terrible. for some reason on this trail people just don't care. As for the trail take The mountain on the south side of the Pima wash trail and walk along the Ridgeline last dog poop there plus it's a good workout. The trail is actually very well-maintained due to the higher amount of traffic it gets. You need to make ensure to bring enough water for the entire hike. The trail is a pretty easy walk the entire way but the desert will sneak up on you. I have found this is also an excellent trail for night hiking on the mountain. Starting at 6pm on a full moon it is an absolutely breathtaking view of the city the trail is somewhat well lit I had light would be required but what a wonderful trail
