Rio Verde, Arizona Map

Did the hike today from the South by 87 near Sunflower going mostly north for about 4.6 miles. Pretty much a hike thru the backs of all the ranches down that direction. Was not very interesting compared to the other hike options in the area. Will try getting to the upper part of the trail to Morman Grove sometime as I suspect that will be more elevated and much prettier. Will not do this part again.

I would take Tina’s advice and try to start a bit further up, as the beginning of he trail is by the highway and not too interesting except for a few pretty areas. I suspect the trail is much better further up. Still, I enjoyed it!

Great trail! Did it with my friend, we both drive built 100 series land cruisers. Both of us used our rock slides twice. Come prepared and so long as an experienced driver drives all will be fine. Minimum of 2 vehicles and carry proper recovery gear!

I haven't done the entire trail as listed here. But I have bypassed half of it by going in on Cross F trail off of the Old Highway 87 just before it dead ends.

The trail follows a drainage and has 2 reliable perennial springs that always have water in them. Lots of trees until you get closer to Mormon Grove, where it is a lot more exposed. Prime javelina country - my dog and I encountered the biggest one I have ever seen and lived to tell the tale.

One of my favorite trails due to almost guaranteed solitude and reliable water!

Took the Jeep out, had a great time! Trail gets very narrow, don't expect to come out unscathed. Recommend having a good driver, dicey obstacles for about 5 miles of the loop- challenging!

Really great trail! Beautiful views and interesting abandoned mines and equipment. The trail has gotten harder over the past few months though. It's still fairly easy to get to the main mine area, but to do the whole loop has gotten very difficult. I have a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon with a 2.5" lift and 35" tires and It was harder than anything I would do again. I made it out with minimal damage, but it wasn't easy. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone that doesn't have a serious off-road vehicle.

Great trail! Fairly difficult in areas with beautiful views in between. The mine area is a great place to get out and have lunch. Trail took us about 6 hrs to complete with an hour of that being a lunch stop. The trail is narrow in many places that would make it difficult for a full size 4x4. All in all a great experience.

This trail is not at all clearly defined... it has no marked trail head. The first 2 miles is really a flood wash and is extremely overgrown in many places. Definitely not dog or horse friendly. I would recommend paying close attention to your landmarks, since there are many flood washes that run parallel. Won't be doing this hike again

This trail has been closed to vehicles on both ends for quite some time now!

You can still hike it if you want though.
