Beautiful. Got there at 715am on a Saturday and snagged the last parking spot, although you can also park on the road. Stay near the creek instead of taking the main trail just as other reviewers said, and it is so much better. We only hiked the 4 miles to the spring and back.

Nice little hike! Very easy to do! Follow the directions on the app and you won’t have any problems finding the creek! It’s all downhill, worst part is coming back up and getting slightly winded but if you cooled off in the creek beforehand it’s not too bad. Seriously tho, the directions to find the trail are super easy, when you first take the trail at the second fence there’s another path that diverts to the right and down, don’t take that path, you’ll have to backtrack if you do.

Terrible Trail for kids!! I took my 5 year old and 10 year old yesterday midday and it was a boring trail because the topology and foliage is the same the entire trail. There is no “peak” or lake or anything exciting. It is really fine gravel that is uneven, so they both fell multiple times. The real reason I would NEVER mark this as a good hiking trail is there are tons of unmarked trails for UTV/ATV’s, so not only did we get off our trail for a bit but I had to scream at the top of my lungs for a UTV to “STOP” so they didn’t hit my children! It was terrifying! And this was midday on a Tuesday, I would NEVER go on a hike here after work hours or on a weekend. Way too dangerous!

The trailhead is to the left of the Shoefly Village Ruins sign behind the debris pile. It’s more of a road than a trail all the way to the cow pond. I came back over the mountain the trail moves around, lots of game trails you can follow. I would not do this one again.

Great trail, the water was very cold and it was a bit more packed than we expected. But the hike was nice & the weather was beautiful.

Great trail. Needs a few signs so people don’t take wrong turns. If you choose to continue after the spring (4 mile mark) it is mega steep. 33% grades or more. Be prepared. Great side trails to see many waterfalls on the creek. Butterflies everywhere!

Loved this loop. Recommend doing it counter clockwise so you get the creek at the end. Not a hard hike at all.

very quiet and peaceful trail. not the best scenery, but still lots of fun.

I would consider this an easy hike. It’s a nice trail that has clear paths. Hiking a long the water is awesome and there are many shaded spots along the path.

This was a delightful trail. It was easy to get to from Payson and easy to find the parking lot. Pay attention to the start of the trail from the parking lot. It is not super obvious. The trail actually starts from the campground on the other side of the road. Or you can following the brown hiking guy sign in the parking lot (closest to the road) down to the creek which actually pops you back onto the road and across the street. A man who started right ahead of us and turned around 2 miles in because he saw a bear on trail. We saw several possible piles of bear poo on the trail as well. The many butterfly’s hanging out on the clusters of flowers along the trail was one of my favorite things. The creek was lovely as well but the waterfall weren’t as big as expected. We started the ascent to the rim, took in some views about a half mile from the end of the trail and turned around. I have a feeling I wasn’t missing much. The way down we got of trail which was a bit scary, steep and slippery . There were alot of cairns so not sure how. There weren’t may people on trail today. There were a few hours we didn’t see anyone at all.

Really enjoyed this one, though towards the end there the trail picks up in elevation gain and it’s on the verge of what I’d call a moderate to hard moderate trail. We all made it up and back within about 4-5 hours though, even though none of us are very experienced hikers. Would recommend!

A little more than moderate.

This was a very easy trail. A little difficult to find but followed the directions and it went very well. It was busy when we went but not overly crowded and uncomfortable for a Saturday. We took our dogs and it was very dog friendly area. Water was still cold but loved the views and would do it again!

Solid trail, it has a steady incline the entire way though All trails has it wrong. Strava has the elevation gain at about 1400ft vs 2400 it says on the app but it’s a true 8 miler to the top and back. It’s pretty steady and one you can bring the family too. It’s not too much of a spring but the water is so refreshing this time of year. Great if you like having the Creek with you and jumping in from time to time. You’ll be disappointed if you go expecting views of the surrounding areas. Definitely worth doing

This hike was beautiful in so many ways. Green, cool early in the morning, birds, butterflies and a creek. Trail is rocky, steep at times but not too difficult, went down to the creek and followed that back and that was more difficult terrain. I grew up in the mountains of Boulder Colorado and this was a really nice surprise.

Great trail for kids and dogs!

Weather was perfect and trail had good flow of people. After you pass the first gate, stay on the trail to the right for more shade and hiking closer to the creek. This path meets up to main trail multiple times. Lots of camping spots on both sides of creek and plenty of kid friendly side pools. Nice, cozy and well tucked back campsite at the end if you're staying the night. cross little wood beam bridge and go left.

Just got done backpacking, camped overnight. The hike in can be a bit hot so I recommend starting early. walk the path along the creek as much as you can. much better canopy. tons of places to camp for the night. depending on time all ages can do this hike.

Great little trail. The only reason I am Giving it 4 out of 5 is primarily due to sporadic trail markings and many fallen trees on path. Thankfully a ton of cairns along the way. Got a little turned around when crossing a dry river bed and ended up adding a mile or so to this but no biggie. (Thanks to some well mannered hikers that pointed me back in the right direction!). Outside of that, beautiful meandering paths through woods, meadows and canyons. Highly recommend hiking with poles as some areas are steep and counterbalance is good on descent.

Some of the photos posted here are of water wheel and not Ellison Creek- Ellison Creek we had pretty much to ourselves for most of the time. Water was freezing but it was beautiful! Not marked well- so follow all trails directions.

This was a lovely trail going along the creek. I went clockwise and think I may have liked it better counterclockwise. I was initially just going to do the out and back Horton Creek Trail map. I started with that path. When I came to the really steep part of the trail where you can go up and look out, I realized I would also have to come back down and didn’t feel I’d be all that safe since I was alone. I decided to turn around. When I got to where the trail splits and you could do the loop, I took it. And ended up on this path. The loop part of the trail was less shaded and not quite as pretty as walking along the creek. I’m glad I did it but I think keeping it to out and back would have been more enjoyable overall. My Garmin clocked the mileage right at 10 miles even though this says 10.4.

Easy wide trail for the first 4 miles, last 1 mile up is very steep, dusty, and overgrown. The views are nice, but not worth the hike up. Exhausting to go up and tricky to navigate down. Beautiful areas to stop and dip in the cold creek water. Dogs loved the creek! Hiked on a Thursday - started at 7:30 am and the parking lot already had ~5 cars. Saw 3-4 groups for the majority of the hike, then several more during the last 2 miles out around 1pm. Parking lot was full when we left. Would do again on a weekday, and skip the last steep killer mile.

A nice trail if you’re looking for a quiet path by the river.

After you turn right its dirt road roughly for 1 1/2 miles. Don't need 4 wheel drive, there are a few rough areas. Great out and back hike! At the beginning you'll cross the creek a few times. Gradual incline at first then sections of steep inclines. Just before mile 2 start watching for cairns, they will guide you in the right direction. Some areas are overgrown but not to the point you have to turn around. Once you get to the road you made it to the end.

Simple trail with rocky waterslide at the end. Water was cold which was nice on a warm day! It was busy but wouldn’t expect anything less on a Sunday. Will do it again!

Went there about 3 week ago around 9 am and once we got there there weren’t many people. But when we started exploring downstream a lot of people started going to the fall, oh boy! It got packed. The hike wasn’t bad at all. The water was extremely cold. I only got in once and that was it for me. It’s pretty with less people.
