Returned to Chiricahuas after visiting years ago, and it's still magical. Parked at the visitor center and hiked up Rhyolite Canyon to heart of the rocks. Shaded almost the entire way and very quite. Heart of the Rocks is so awesome! The Duck!

Lunch at Inspiration Point. Saw only one pair of hikers the entire day. 11 miles total by my GPS. Great day! And the Duck!

Lots of shade at the beginning. Great canopies of oak and juniper trees.

Very nice at sunset. The rock formations are worth the trip. It was a bit crowded however. Morning sun might be s good time to view the rocks.

We hiked this trail this past June, and it is definitely the shortest route to the top of Chiricahua Peak. However, it may not be the fastest. There is so much trail maintenance needed on this trail, it's a shame it's not been done. Since the wildfire that went thru here years ago, the area is pretty devastated. Tons of downed trees and leaning trees, & dead trees everywhere. A couple of days with a few chainsaws and this trail could be seriously revitalized. Very slow going when you have to crawl under, and over all the fallen trees. A little disconcerting too. It's not super difficult in terms of steepness, nor length. There is one stretch of this, once you climb out of the canyon and traverse along the first big switchback, that is back into old forest like you expect from Southern Arizona's island ranges. Then it moves back into a burn area as you make your last climb to the top. The views are really good now of course, as all the tress that were there, are gone. Interestingly enough, the peak does have a little shade as some of the trees were spared right on top. Forest fires are weird for sure. Not highly recommended due to the obvious, but with some improvement, it could be brought back to a well used trail.

Cool place. Check out Balanced Rock.

Also recommend hiking a ways into the canyon. It's a different experience seeing the rock spires tower above you.

Took the shuttle from the Visitor Center to the top and hiked down the following trails: Ed Riggs, Mushroom Rock, Inspiration Point, Big Balanced Rock, Heart of Rocks Loop, Sarah Deming, and Lower Rhyolite Canyon. This was a beautiful hike up and down across the canyons with some outstanding rock formations and forests along the way. We ended up back at the Visitor Center where our car was parked.
LENGTH: 8.5 miles

It's one of those short jaunts to move you from one parking lot to another. If you have kids, there's some information you might like along the trail and it's easy.
