took my DRZ out for a first time ever off road ride. This trail (I took 10 and 3554 entirely) was quite a workout! I would put this as an above average start for someone who hasn't been off road but knows the basics of riding and has been on road for a while. the DRZ handled it just fine and the views were spectacular. if anything, I'd do it again just for the view! for now, I may try to find something a bit more beginning friendly for my second ride. pretty sore after this one. great trail though!

This trail is what you would expect. Its fairly easy however there is a small portion on the mountain itself that is slightly difficult, but beginners would still be okay. This is a personal preference but I hated that it was almost a mile to the actual hike, the hike itself, then another 'almost mile' back out. This trail is 3/4 desert walking (very little shade) and 1/4 hike.

Great hike through the desert. Relatively close to the East valley. Well maintained and we'll traveled. Great views at the top.

Has an awesome sandier portion with banked turns on the leg between Usery Pass and Phon D Sutton.

Fun trail occasionally hard to find. Some great views of red Mountain and the salt River. There are many other trails and washes that intersect. This makes it easy to take a quick short cut back to the beginning. We cut about 2 miles off the main trail by doing this. We didn’t want to do the whole 7 miles. We did about five.

Park for free by the bridge just before Granite Reef recreation site or roadside just after. Granite Reef requires a paid pass.

This is a great MTB trail. I was hiking and went off trail most of the time. I did a Little Rock hounding and found some nice quartz.

It’s straight up desert crossing, not featured, maintained hiking trails. I like that.

Decent views - started at 0615 finished at about 0855 as we stopped for lunch - I hike a lot in Arizona in the summer but the last mile was oppressively hot. At 108 my backpack thermometer read 120 in direct sun. I’d recommend not doing this one during July/Aug unless the high is below 105

Decent trail if you don’t want to drive to the park, though you still have to pay. Views of the Superstitions and Pass Mountain.

Nice little hike up to the saddle. Enough exercise for me on a hot June morning.

I think the only parking area is about a mile away from the trail. You have to get a permit at the Walgreens on the way in ($8). I skipped this trail.

Fantastic loops! Make your own distance by adding loops or subtracting...... good elevation not too much, good for trail running and bikes! This is a great easy go to trail system!

A bit too flat, very little shade. Nice blossoms beginning to show.

A flat trail, great for a lazy stroll. luckily the sun was behind clouds. no shade here.

The miles are definitely miscalculated and the trail map available at the ranger's office tells you that it is 7 miles or so. I hiked this trail more than ten times and it's a pleasure every time, not to mention the great views and solitude. It's 10 miles from starting point and back to the trail head. I recommend it!!!

Second time we went there made a lot of stops to enjoy the beautiful view. Go early and take plenty of water and comfortable shoes.

Nice trail, mostly flat but enough elevation to catch a few decent peeks at the Salt River and the Red Mountain.

Great trail for running!

I didn’t realize most of this hike/trail was a wash but it’s a good little hike for little dogs. Lots of mountain bikers and tons of Cholla to watch for!

Nice trail but a bit too flat and generic to get 4 stars from me.

My personal favorite hiking trail. Not tough, but long enough to get a good hike in.

Good trail, not too long. So many cactuses, I haven’t made it through without the pups getting one stuck in their paw, but otherwise good. Also the price went up to $7 to enter the park.

Plenty of free parking, same as EJ Mountain.
The first mile of the trail is fairly unspectacular, but then it climbs and you get a little workout and some views of Four Peaks. Near the end the trail forks a few times and disappears up a mountainside without going to the top. This looked like a fun scramble, and would probably have earned a 4th star...but it will have to be an adventure for next time.
I did EJ Mountain first and this is a good warm up or addition if you want to add a few extra miles.

Decent trail, just stay away from the Signal Wash which runs parallel with the Spillway Trail and is much too sandy.

First time in Tonto National, pleasantly surprised at the beauty. Saguaros were starting to bloom.
The views of the east and west canyon walls were spectacular. Looking forward to taking the run coming from the southend for a different perspective. Some area will need 4W with full size Jeep. Nice half day run.

One of the better “city hikes” - not too many people there on a weekend - some fairly steep inclines. Would do it again

My son and I went walking on this trail in late April 2018. We saw many saguaros blooming, very pretty. We accessed by Crismon, there is a $2.00 self pay charge per person to use the trail, so be sure to bring cash!

By far my favorite loop at the Hawes Trail System. Not as much elevation as doing the full Hawes Trail Loop, but the views are much better and the trail is way more fun. Lots of rolling hills and undulations - the miles just fly by. Trail is easy/moderate when on the Ridge Trail connector, bumps up to moderate on Saddle Trail, and is more difficult/technical on Saguaro Trail and Mine Shaft.

Pros - great views, well maintained trails, good terrain and elevation, not too crowded, most of trail is shaded in the afternoon/evening.

Cons - Trail is pretty poorly marked. Thankfully the AllTrails app on my phone was very accurate and I was able to get back on the trail pretty easily.

More of a mountain bike than a hike trail. For hiking it’s pretty easy and very exposed. Not a tad of shade, so better for the winter months. Be aware of bikers.

Saw my first Saguaro blossoms on this beautiful trail today! The desert was once again gorgeous on this hike. Seemed like everything was purposely planted or placed in its spot. Great views of Superstition Mtns. Can’t wait to have hubby ride his bike thru here this weekend while I walk the dog!
