I went hiking with my boyfriend and our dog today. He is about 28 pounds and this trail was not difficult at all for him, especially being his first time hiking. There are some steep short ledges that can be scary when a biker comers around the corner. Make sure you keep an eye on your pooch as there are many cacti along the trail. Great day!

nice trail for this beautiful weather! had trouble finding some of the markers, but the horse poop lead the way. ;)

There is a lost dog, she is tan colored, about 50 pounds, long haired, possibly a shepherd or husky mix. She was spotted here about an hour ago. If you see her, please call her owner- Jon @ 480-593-5029. She is posted as missing in the Next Door App. Her name is Sierra, she is skiddish and has been missing since Friday. Thank you.

Went hiking with wife, kids, and cousin on our first long distance hike of the season to practice building up distance endurance. Only thing that was really disappointing with this trail is how the desert plants are not kept trimmed back from the trail and it can be tricky (and painful) to maneuver through some areas of the trail. Lots of great wildlife to be found along the way and the view of the lake is worth the trip out here. No horses or rattlesnakes today, but my daughter found a tarantula of decent size which was a pleasant surprise for us.

Amazing hike. A lot of people on a Sunday but everyone very friendly going up and down. The park ranks it a black diamond however I have hike way way harder black diamond trails throughout AZ.

Love the horses in the water staying cool

Very poor markings on trail, got a little lost but all in all beautiful hike, good running/biking trails.

This was a 7.7 mile trail from the trailhead. I would start right and end from the left. I started to the left and it was a very easy start with a hard ending. Tons of rocks on the end of the trail.

I can’t imagine running it in the summer, but in November this was absolutely incredible. Not well marked, but once you look at the map closely and pay attention to where other trails intersect and divert, it’s pretty straightforward. If I would have had more time I would have done it twice. Pretty rocky in multiple spots so it makes running it difficult, but plenty of runable space. Loved this trail!

PLEASE NOTE: If you are hiking, biking or on horseback you DO NOT NEED a permit.
If you are going to DRIVE in Bulldog you MUST have a permit.
Bulldog permits are FREE
Gate codes are changed monthly but the permit comes with gate codes for 6 months.
(If the beginning/end of the month is on a weekend or holiday, the codes may be changed on the next business day, so it's good to renew your permit before the last month)
Permits are available at the Ranger station (Ingram & Higley) or ONLINE at:

IMPORTANT: Anytime you find the gate open or unlocked, CLOSE IT & LOCK IT!
NOTE FOR ALL VEHICLES: There are only 5 legal routes in all of Bulldog. All are MARKED with a route number. If you see a route with no route marking, it is OFF-LIMITS to ALL vehicles. While the Forest Service keeps placing signs designating where NOT to drive, unfortunately we have too many folks who remove/drive over/destroy the signs.

Please take care of OUR public lands, show consideration for others and don't litter. Let's keep the area so it will be enjoyed by our children/grandchildren and all future generations!

Great 7.7 Mile Hike Yesterday! The views were amazing starting Left onto Trail. If you want more of an incline workout I’m told to start Right on to Trail. $7.00 fee/bathrooms at Trailhead. Loved it!!!

Awesome little hike. Great photo opportunities. You can see the fountain in Fountain Hills running from the cave if the timing is right.

Great trail, beautiful view!

Trail is very easy and pretty well marked. Missing a few markers at the half way point which leads to some confusion. Didn’t see horses but was a great walk either way.

Good distance, not much of a challenge elevation/incline wise. The path can get a little confusing at times but is pretty easy to follow if you have your phone.

Great biking trail! Connects to a lot of options and skill level trails.

Relatively easy hike, but beautiful scenery. We arrived at around 8:30 in the morning an there were quite a few people already on the trail. Trail was in most parts easy to follow, but not marked that great, worth the trip, would definitely do it again if we are ever in this neck of the woods again.

It's a favorite go to trail for me! It was relatively quiet today- a late morning Friday with beautiful weather.

I've hiked this with kids, my little dog, friends who never hike, and it's always enjoyable for everyone. It can be challenging for inexperienced hikers but if you bring snacks and take a few breaks along the way, it's doable! 4 stars and not 5 because it can get pretty crowded and there's a fee to get in.

this Trail is marked as moderate. The trail at times a little difficult to follow due to some to rainfall. lots of switchbacks near the top. Very Rocky Trail but very enjoyable

I almost gave this 4 stars for the leg burner on the way up and the 360 degree views at the top including Four Peaks, Red Mountain, Pass Mountain and Salt River.
The trail, however, is not that easy to follow and could use a few more cairns and a bit of trimming in places. It is fairly steep and a good workout, but also has a lot of loose gravel and rocks that subtracts from the experience.

Easy hike with very little elevation gain. Very pretty views of Saguaro Lake and all the coves. We saw a ton of birds and ducks and were a bit startled on the way back when we heard gunshots as apparently it was the start of fowl hunting season (only drawback). We saw a variety of activities on the water from fishing, to boating to paddle boarding but most of the noise and hustle and bustle was limited to the recreation area where you park to access trailhead. I would do this hike again for sure. **Note: Get your $8 parking day pass before-hand so you don’t have to double-back like we did!

It’s a decent sized hill more like, a little short, but decent.

Good hike.

Better than my last visit. Didn’t have a bunch of trash thrown and left behind by people who don’t care.
Water level was very low. Kayakers were having to get out and walk their kayaks over rocks and sand bars.

This trail is a lot of fun! Watched the sun set up top just a few nights ago. What a great way to view the valley!

This is a fun trail. If you start on the bush highway side you climb most the way out with some refreshing inclines along the way and the ride back is really fun! If you start on the Usery side you have the fun first and then climb out. Either way the trail is a lot of fun with nothing too technical. There are a couple of cacti that are really close to the trail and you cross a couple of sandy washes but other than that it’s smooth sailing.

Amazing Sunrise Hike Today with gorgeous views of the lake and landscape! No wild horses spotted today, I would rank as an easy hike, but at times the trail was hard to follow towards the end....use your Navigation! Washrooms on trail site...Get Your $8.00 Park Pass at Gas Station on the way or risk fine.

Trail needs some work. Actually 7.7 miles.

I have done several hikes in the Hawes area, but I think that this was my favorite route so far. Decent workout and the weather was perfect!
