Great if you’re in average or less than average physical condition, but all skill levels should check it out! It is like walking into another world at the end - surprising, beautiful, enchanting. Quick and totally worthwhile hike! Wear shoes for exploring on/over some rocks. We went in early November - sunny and low 60’s, but prob 5-10 degrees cooler at the base of the mountain.

An easy gem of a hike. beautiful from start to finish.

Great trail for an easy trek to see some mountains. Not much to explore once you’re at the end but it’s a very pleasant trail. Shady about half the time. Wonderful sounds of winds and curves.

My wife, son, sister in law and myself took off from the trailhead at 9am. it was already getting hot with not a cloud in the sky. I would suggest starting much earlier for the cooler weather. We got to the top in 2.5 hours. it was sad to see the burn because we had been up there before the burn. We didn't spend a lot of time on top because the bugs were bad at the top for some reason. Then we hiked down. My son and I wanted to get down in 1.5 hours and we did but it required some running. the other two made it down 30 minutes later with no running. We had cold drinks waiting at the bottom which I highly suggest on those hot days. This entire area needs some rain bad! A beautiful and fulfilling hike and definitely not for those looking for an easy hike.

Well maintained trail. Great views as you wind around the mountain, to the watchtower. We particularly enjoyed the low clouds engulfing us on our way down, with a light rain that made the colors of nature pop. Definitely will be back.

Great easy hike with rewarding finish just wish i brought my rock climbing shoes!

Loved the 360 view from the top!

Highlight of our trip! If you love climbing and exploring, this trail is for you! A very easy 3 mi out and back trail that has a huge payoff at the end! Highly recommend climbing up into the rocks and exploring around. So beautiful and you feel like you’re on a different planet.

A very well maintained trail with beautiful views. There were about a million flying ants at the tower which prevented me from exploring not up top. A little over nine miles and I was tired after I returned to the car. Fun hike

Very nice views and trail was easy to follow; even in the rain.

Fabulous! Even in the rain!

Great alternative to Humphreys which was closed at this particular time. Well marked trail. Can do this with sturdy tennis shoes. Very cool manned fire lookout station at the top and helo pad. Great view! Started early. Very sunny on way back down. Great hike!

Tons of hikers as good alternative to Mt Humphreys that was closed due to fire restrictions. Views from top are great in all directions. Fire tower was manned and he gave great info on whole area. Constant up hill for entire hike.

Loved it. Trail is in great shape. Perfect grade to get the heart pumping. Wonderful 360 degree vista from the summit. Plus the nicest people for our fellow hikers. Glad we made the trip from Phoenix.

There aren’t many trails that I would jump on doing twice. This trail is one I would. It was beautiful from walking through the pines, hiking through different views of the nearby mountains, and roaming along the beautiful wild flowers. I really enjoyed this hike and was surprised that it wasn’t harder with the elevation that is gained. This one I mapped at 9.5 miles, taking me 4 hours and 20 minutes. I took 150 pictures in that time. I felt the top was nice but the saddle near the cabin was better. It is a bit windy at the top so make sure to have a proper jacket if the weather is cooler. The dirt road (7 miles) to drive to the trail head was well maintained and I had no issue with my low clearance vehicle. You certainly do not need a 4x4 to get to this one.

Steady climb all the way up. Views from the top are beautiful!

Easy hike, with a great payoff at the end. Take the time to explore around inside the caldera, and see it from different vantage points. Trail is pretty exposed midday, but there are pines at the end - good place to have a snack and cool off.

Good steady climb mostly moderate grade the whole way up, great views from the summit. Perfect day hike or elevation training for humpreys etc. Well maintained trail.

Beautiful hike. Minimally rocky constant uphill to the top. You pass through burned forest areas. Fire lookout on top not manned today. Views on north side simply stunning — all the way to the Grand Canyon.

Love this trail! So easy and beautiful!

Beautiful hike up, just in time for the sunset. Don't plan on coming down in the dark unless you have a good trail dog or a headlamp, as some of the switchbacks are also runoff channels, and you could easily wander wrong. 2 hrs up in the daylight, 2 down in the dark. as of 4/21/18, no snow to speak of on or around the trail. great views of the SF Peaks and the NSF has done a terrific job rebuilding the trail after the big fire.

Fun trail. Very lightly trafficked on a Sunday morning.

This is a short, easy trail that is well maintained and suitable for casual walkers. The trail itself is fairly routine, but prepare to be enchanted as you approach and enter the towering rock doorway into the caldera canyon. It is gorgeous and contains a highly varied backdrop of contrasting rocks, colors and vegetation. It is fairly tale perfect and feels like a secret oasis inside the canyon. All of this gives Red Mt a distinct character that is unlike any other hike in the area, and provides a highly enjoyable and memorable walk.

Walked this trail with my wife as beginners in hiking. The road to the parking "lot" is unpaved and signage for the road is really visable. The trail head is well identified with various signs along the way to verify you are on the right path even though the trail is clearly warn into the earth. There is a little incline walking into the volcano which can slow the pace down but coming out is a breeze. You must climb up a 6' maintained ladder to enter the volcano and do not worry as there are hand rails as well. The views inside are incredible and the views of the San Francisco Peak to the East is really nice on the trail.

Great trail - easy and definitely a great payoff at the end.

beautiful hike

Probably the best scenic hike for the short journey. Easy and beautiful.

The long dirt road leading to the trailhead is an adventure on its own. Once you arrive the trail there is a pit toilet and map to get your bearing. There is a creek crossing which was dry in December. Lovely views throughout and the almost 360 views from the lookout are terrific. 3 hours up and 2 hours down. Definitely a nice trail. A few spots of larger loose rocks which I call ankle twisters and then some loose gravel so take some care there.

Exceeded my expectations! The trail was very easy and well marked. My wife and I were the only ones the trail. There is a lot of exploring around at the end of the trail. Just be on the lookout for loose gravel if you explore the rock faces.

A friend and I rode this trail 10/22/17. This trail has the perfect challenge for beginners with minimal technical skills required to start off in the mountain biking sport. The views from many of the climbs were phenomenal. The trail had slow traffic for the majority of it. I'll definitely try to get to this trail again on my bike in the future.
