Encountered a rattlesnake on the edge of the trail, but was able to go around it safely. Compared to other “moderate” hikes, I would classify this as a long easy trail with some elevation gain. Nice views. Saw remains from a recent wildfire, which added to the scenery. $7 fee to get into the park.

Bring bug spray! Easy hike for kids. We had a two, tree and one year old. They loved the water. Took us two and a half hours with the little ones. Not much traffic until you hit the water. We will go again!

Our group of three adults really enjoyed this trail ending at a lovely waterfall in mid-May. The scenery in this area of Carefree is just gorgeous anyway and the hike in is fairly easy. It is steep down at first and then levels out to a long portion of flat ground on gravel for a while, until you come to the wash where it is a bit overgrown but still manageable to walk along the edge until you get to the waterfall. We followed the advice of another review here and always kept left when there were trail breaks and never lost our way. It was definitely buggy in some places, but mostly just moths and bees. The waterfall is just lovely and the water was clean and shallow - super fun for both kids and adults to play in and just wander around or sit and enjoy. Of course, the hike back out includes that hill you came down in the beginning, so you'll get your heart pumping a bit there, but just take breaks on the way up if it gets too rough and you'll make it just fine. Enjoy!

This was great. I loved the waterfall at the end. Just wished you could do the incline of the trail to start versus the end.

Lovely trail. Nice workout going up Tortuga

Went out to Cave Creek yesterday, and hiked along Spur Cross, meeting Metate and Towhee. Didn't go into the forest. It was more like just a walk through the desert. Plenty to see anyway, as there always is off of Spur Cross. Even a rattlesnake!

Short but steep with an amazing view at the top.

Amazing trail with great elevation range. Saw two deer and you saguaros were so diverse and in bloom. Spectacular!

This trail is primarily flat which makes it easy to walk through and find your way. But once you get past the waterfall, the trail is covered with foliage you have to duck through or climb over. The path is still very visible though. We were trying to get to the pooling area to swim and didn’t make it. A lot of people kept turning back after the waterfall area which left us with questions of how much further. The waterfall was nice. The stream dries up and the day goes on though. Around noon, water was flowing a little heavier on the way to the falls, and one the way back around 2, it had dried up after a certain point. There are a lot of bugs but they’re harmless unless provoked. Unfortunately, my partner had a nice, sweet oatmeal Cliff bar in her shorts’ pocket - opened. And a bee tried to go after it and stung her during the swatting. :( Luckily I had some Bentonite clay in the car and some Benadryl! Lots of pretty butterflies and little moths fluttering around too.

Great hike, we had to take an alternate trail because Dragon Fly was closed, the creek was pretty much dry. Even still, it was absolutely beautiful.

Great, trail! Not very well marked!!!! Hard to find if you’ve never been! Otherwise worth going! If your at parking lot go downhill at end go downhill, make a left, go straight up hill, at wash make a right, make left at creek and stay left you will run into waterfall.

My third time doing Skull Mesa, but first time in eight years. I had forgotten how strenuous this trail can be. Plenty of wildlife today (May 22, 2020); rattler, bobcat, toads. The views are really whimsical and dynamic along the way up (you’ll notice the foliage start to change), but the real treat is the view from the top. Unfortunately my camera coughed out its last shutter on the way up, and the sensor went kaput. Regardless, beautiful trail, relatively easy way finding, and again— challenging. I consumed two gallons of water on the hike, and it was only 91° and breezy— so please go prepared.

Great trail to get some “comfortable “ miles in. Very well marked and super easy to follow. Even got to see a coyote, epic afternoon.

I would call this trail easy. There were small kids walking with their parents with no problem. Once you hit the waterfall, the boulders can be slippery if you don’t have good traction. But it was LOVELY! The cold water felt very refreshing and the view is to die for.

Nice trail. Not too rocky. Could not complete loop because Dragonfly Trail is closed; but turned around and still did 5 miles Next time we will do Spur/Metate/Tortuga— but probably not til the fall
