dog friendly...definitely a great running trail! 3.5 miles roundtrip from parked car

Great hike! Good for beginners as well. The drive to Dude is a bit stressful, probably more stressful than the hike itself. Hike Starts off with board walks. Then breaks into beautiful flower pastures for basically the rest of the hike and beautiful views almost the entire second half of the hike once you break out of the woods a bit! When you get near the top there are some paths that run along extremely steep hills and would be nervous to have a kid with me on these parts. Other than that it’s a beautiful hike, last time I hiked it though the rain and fog rolled in and completely blocked out the view and also made for a very muddy hike but no big deal. I’ll hike it again this summer. Make sure you check the weather before you go because the view is stunning, truly one of a kind!

This one is necessary if you are visiting or live on the island. Hike this at least once, I prefer Dude personally for the scenic views at the top.

A beautiful hike that is very close to Ketchikan, and well worth the effort! The trail takes you through a beautiful forested area amoungst flowing streams, and along the way are several lookouts to the amazing vistas of Alaska. The grandient is steepest at the beginning and end, but cools down in the middle. A very well looked after trail and a very rewarding experience!

It was raining so there was a lot of standing water on the trail. Majority of the steps and wood walkways have non skid so it was not slippery. I enjoyed the lush green of the forest. Highlight of the walk was seeing four bears along the stream eating salmon. We watched them for quite awhile and they were not disturbed by our presence as we were on the bridge.

One of the best views in Ketchikan and you can hike up in an hour to hour and a half!

My family of 5 rode a bike from First Lutheran Church to Saxman and back, We stopped by downtown Ketchikan, Creek Street, and spent some time exploring Saxman Totem Park. About 1/3 of the rides we rode on the sidewalk (slowly), to avoid traffic on south Tongass Highway. It's something fun to do if you cruise into town.

Completed hike on the morning of August 12th. Took approximately 4 hours round trip with a break on the summit. Trail conditions very good. No mud and mostly dry. The first mile and last half mile have the steepest grades and it mellows a bit in the middle after the first overlook. We started at 7:00 am and had the trail mostly to ourselves. On our descent closer to the trailhead late morning there were quite a few groups hiking to the first overlook. Love this hike because you get to enjoy both a dense rainforest hike and eventually some alpine.

Great trail with lots of shade. A little tough (hard) because you’re either going up stairs and rocks or down. Beautiful scenery, views and great picnic spot at the top. It took 4.5 hours round trip including breaks.

I did the traverse from Silvis to deer mountain. It was by far the hardest hike. It was 13 miles, 3000 ft elevation gain, and ropes. I stayed over night. The hike was mostly dry and would recommend trekking poles. The full hike is very difficult!

This was my first hike in Alaska and it was beautiful! My husband and I loved the mossy rainforest and the many waterfalls were all beautiful. We hiked on a misty day and it was muddy but not too bad. We didn’t see much wildlife besides 6 slugs and a few birds. The top of the mountain is pretty slippery on a wet day and it got too foggy to see the next marker by a certain point. We didn’t see a view because of the fog but the views along the way were lovely. It is a large elevation change so I found it to be a challenging hike.

Loved this trail, very easy for a nice stroll. Would be a great place for trail running. Saw some men salmon fishing. Great camping spots too. A few geocache spots too!

Great trail. The terrain changes as you near the top. The first part of the trail is the typical lush foliage for the area and as someone else mentioned lots of berry picking opportunities. Near the top the foliage thins out and tree are much smaller. It’s wetter/muddier up top and with significant rock face is slippery and much slower going. From there you also have a nice view of The Valley and the airport.

Amazing hike! Surprisingly dry given the recent rain. Also has a fair amount of traffic which I find a plus in unfamiliar areas.

Bucket List Hike! It’s difficult both up and down but very rewarding view points and berry patches to catch your breath. We only encountered 2 couples all afternoon and the weather was warm and sunny. Perfect score except for insects at the top! Bring Bug Repellent! And a picnic :)

Great hike. First half Of the way up is easy and some of the most scenic forest I’ve hiked. It felt tropical with ferns and giant Lilly pad-like greens. Beautiful waterfall. The second half is a lot harder. Steep, up and down over large tree root structures with awkward footing and lots of mud. But def worth it. Last 1/4 mile was very swampy. Also, my gps clocked 10 miles instead of the 8.4 shown.

From the moment we were on trail we felt like we had entered a magical woodland paradise. Absolute beauty all around. Lots of vertical gain, but definitely worth the view at the top. It only got buggy near the summit, lots of shade, an absolutely amazing trail.

Loved the changing ecosystems of this trail. Deep old growth forest all the way to ocean shore. Great fun for whole family!
