Nice easy trail to a beautiful waterfall.

pretty trail goes between following the creek and beautiful meadows. the description for the trail as being "difficult"I would argue is not applicable. The bridges and eroded parts of the trail have been restored. The trail is longer than originally posted on this app. From the gun range (where you park) to the end of the road maybe .3 of a mile. About 2 miles of wide (atv width) along the river. About 6.5 miles single track trail after that. it is not clear where Montana Creek Trail ends and Winfall Lake trail starts no signage of any kind. Definitely check out Winfall Lake it's pretty awesome. There's also cabin that is open to the public which is awesome to check out. I did half an hour of canoeing (the cabin had a canoe) and went on to Herbert glacier and back. I did a 20+ mile day. again the difficult rating no longer applys since the trail been restored. It's very flat compared to most trails around. it can get slippery so I would recommend going on a sunny day.

Not a difficult trail at all.. good day hike.

Beautiful trail - for a mountain summit it is not ridiculously strenuous. The view is stunning and so worth the climb. Hot on a clear day because the last half is mostly exposed. Loved it!

Great hike! Done it a few times. Caves aren’t always there though, so a little disappointing if you do the whole hike and don’t get that reward.

the trail itself is definitely not difficult. the whole time basically from the cutoff of Sprawling Meadows Trail you are confined to "board walking" the whole Trail is covered in marshes and muskegs. the trail has a slight incline throughout but nothing difficult. The cabin is beautiful has a great lookout to the water on a clear day. didn't see any wildlife but lots of markings. I only gave it to stars because you're walking on boards the whole time.

Beautiful views bring sandals your feel will get wet. There is no "your done here" clear end. You will hit medow, forest, medow, forest and eventually end up in a beautiful medow on the top. You lose the trail in the medow but can follow the pink and orange flags in tree branches then finally lose them . it's breathtaking at the top(if its clear) and worth the wet muddy feet.

My wife and I did this trail last June while on a Disney Alaskan Cruise. The trail is moderate and the views are absolutely stunning!!! Looking out over the valley and glacier everyone in our group was completely silent, just taking it all in.

Went up on a beautiful day in late August. Great views of the channel, downtown Juneau, and various peaks and valleys. Might be a good idea to take the tram up/ down to skip what would be the muddiest part of the trail if it has rained recently. Lots of marmots and ptarmigans. Also saw a northern harrier chasing a raven. Legs were a little sore the next day, but worth it!

Great trail and easy for kids

This is an awesome Trail. It doesn't get too close to the glacier, but you do have some nice glacier views. It does go through some very pretty temperate rainforest. We saw some spawning Sockeye salmon in the creek, and also a family of 4 bears right off the trail.

Easy trail to get right to Nugget Falls with great views of Mendenhall Glacier and the mountains!

Great trail, well used. Wide, flat, smooth.

Was on my way to disc golf when I decided to do this trail instead. Only had running shoes with me haha, def bring boots as it tends to get pretty muddy at parts. Loved this trail, I was the only one out there today and it was so peaceful. If you don’t plan on camping at near the top I’d recommend starting earlier than later. I started about 2pm and by the time I’d gotten back to following the creek it was rather evident the bears were out as there were multiple fresh piles on the trail haha, also the road to the trailhead closes at 9pm so def be down before then or your car will get booted apparently. First 2 miles are simple and flat, very beautiful along the creek. The rest of the way is up and I mean up. Felt like there was about 2500 hundred feet of gain in around the next 2 miles. Views are worth it and there are some great soft spots to just lay around up near the top :)

views can't be beat

16 Aug 2018 - Flat and well maintained trail. Perfect trail for walking the pups, great scenery, lots of pollen flying from the fireweed, smooth trail to run, and pretty awesome to watch the planes depart/arrive! Saw a couple people on bikes as well, it’s a pretty wide trail to easily share.

Epic. The hike was perfect, brought my dog... she’s pretty worn out from it but she loved every minute of it out there. Being on the Glacier was something else. I highly recommend this hike.

Fantastic hike to the ice caves and on the glacier. We had a professional guide for our group age 7 to 69, guide was critical to being on the glacier safely

We came in on a cruise. You can take the city bus and get off at the stop after the visitors center. Than walk a mile down the road past the camp ground to the trail head. The hike is amazing. Climbing down the the rock face at the end was a little daunting. But wow getting to set foot on the glacier with no one around was an unbelievable experience. You need to be very confident in your scrambling skills to do the final climb.

nice and easy very well trafficked and definitely not hard, a nice trail for a rainy day (as long as you're wearing waterproof shoes)

nice trail. not to difficult. I was a little bummed out when we reached the creek/river (that is the start of nugget falls) and that there was no access to view the falls. We really didn't get to see the glacier till the very end of the loop (started opposite of the visitor center). AJ falls was stunning! The stairs were kinda neat. the forest was amazing. Vistas were few. I give this trail a 5 out of 10.

This trail is not for the weak minded or anyone not ready for miles of steep climbing on 1-2 feet width of trail that on one side is a cliff and the other is a drop right into trees. Definitely plan this trail out when there is no rain in the forecast since most of the trail is made up of loose rocks. I would plan other hikes to get warmed up and used to heights before attempting this. We planned this after four days of hiking other trails and I am glad we didn’t do this one first. We are very active couple and we completed this in 4.5 hours. We took plenty of water and a meal to get us through this. Also bring mole skin just in case your feet blister and definitely wear bug spray if it’s a hot and clear day. The flies were horrible for most of the climb and it became almost unbearable at the end. Also bring some sunblock for the second part of the trail which is completely open. The view at the top is worth it so bring a blanket and enjoy a well deserved break.

Thought this would be easy at first since .5 miles is smooth gravel with wide paths but then it slowly got more difficult after the trail split. Took the “View Point” trail which turned the man made path into nature made. The path took you up and over tree limbs, steep rock hills and then eventually into climbing up cliffs until you see the glacier. We decided to keep going until we climbed onto the glacier and got a sample of it’s water. I would highly recommend taking a bottle or cup with you to try the water and make sure to wear really good boots or you can easier slip while climbing and hiking this trail. This trail gives you a great view of Nugget Falls, glacier caves and surrounding mountains. Bring warm clothes to change into once you get to the glacier and bring a snack to get you back home.

Moderate due to elevation but was very well maintained and didn’t have a lot of traffic on it. Great views from the top and was able to see downtown Juneau easily. Would recommend if you don’t mind heights.

Beautiful trail with plenty of great views for photos. Trail is mostly all 2x4 boards that are put together to create steps. Make sure you are ready for tons of stairs. Going done is rough due to the boards but the cabin and view from the top is worth it. Went during dry spell and 74 degrees outside but could tell that the trail would be slippery if it wasn’t for the boards. Reached cabin in 1hr 15mins which was perfect.

One of my favorite hikes, I try to head up at least 5 times a summer. once at top it's one of the most beautiful views.

Started at Basin and got all the way to Gastineau Peak. It is a very well maintained and highly populated trail considering you will run into many tourists. If you stop at the tram, great job! But you’re really missing out if you don’t at least get up on the ridge line! It gets pretty rocky after you pass the cross toward the ridge, but there were many tourists walking in running shoes and even Converse who still made it close. As always, I recommend going on a clear day so you can see the views from up top! Next time I’ll head another mile or so past Gastineau to Mt. Roberts Peak!
