Explore the most popular forest trails in Alaska with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

The falls are beautiful. You can also access the falls with a shorter distance if taken from a trail head off of Slaughter Ridge Rd.

This is a wonderful place to bike or walk. We use these trails just about everyday!

Awesome trail!.....with a multitude of botanical wonders!

Switchback, switchback, oh wait another switchback.... this is beautiful if you have the stamina to go the whole way. Got rained on but overall it’s as perfect as everyone says it is.

Did this 38 mile trail in 2 1/2 days. Well marked with plenty of water resources, campsites and bear boxes. Beautiful views and easy elevation gain/drops.

Starts off flat and descends. Prepare to get eaten alive by huge mosquitoes. Well they help keep you at a good pace I suppose. Then around 1.5 miles you start ascending. Around 2.5 miles you start going up the hill but the trail never leads to the top. It takes you back down to a lake. Very anticlimactic. Two stars for the nice view on the way to the top of the hill that you will never reach. Only wildlife we saw was a wild chicken. It is the state bird of Alaska.

Short, nature walk. Views are okay for a short walk. Not something you would do twice. Trail does not get up close to falls for a good picture unless you climb make your way closer in mud.

Perfect spot for hikers and bikers of all levels. Wildlife is abundant! This is a great spot to see moose and other critters.

Beautiful hike to a lake on a well maintained trail. Very peaceful and serine. Easy access from cruise port. Ended up going all the way to Upper Reid Falls for a 5.5 our pack trip. Well worth it.

This is literally 45 degrees rock climbing lol but the view at the top is worth it! It took us 4 hours to get to the top and 2 hours to get down. It was the hardest hike I've ever done

Epic hike with my daughter on July 15, 2018. We made Summit and it was worth the steady and steep uphill trek. Once we hit the storm cabin we moved on to the epic summit where the views were heavenly. Definitely good to carry bear spray. We started at 10 am and it was very light traffic. By 4 pm when we were making our decent there were a lot of people. One of the best hikes ever. Layers are recommended as we went from warm woods to cold snowy mountain sides. Suggestion-
Make it to the summit!!!

Fun hike. We made it to the first bench and then home on a work night. It is very apparent that you gain elevation. The mosquitos, black flies and no-see-ums were annoying so definitely wear bug spray

Easy hike with two high-reward destinations closely accessible. The hand trolley is awesome, and the river gorge is impressive and beautiful. Access both from the road on one side or Alyeska Resort.

Unparalleled views and scenery seem too easily accessed for the quick, flat hike. Get up close to ice and snow formations, a twisting river, and Byron Glacier, and look back at Portage Valley and Lake if you climb a little higher. Bring bug spray.

Well-maintained trail and great views of the mountains and river are worth the walk. Comfortable viewing platform highlights dozens of salmon and high potential for bear and bald eagle sightings. Small parking lot (with bathroom) but lots of people on trails. Bring bug spray.

absolutely beautiful hike. summit was cold, so bring appropriate wind breaker for your incredible summit photos. highly recommend, there is no othing else this beautiful and/or accessable from right outside Anchorage! Plus, if you go early, wildlife will be out. saw a massive grizzly and bull moose as you cross the first Bluff!

First over night backpacking trip with Girls Who Hike Ak! It was a great hike. Awesome views, not horrible weather. Started at Primerose.

Amazing hike. Don’t stop at the hand trolly keep going. The forest is beautiful and the trail is well maintained.

Good trail little over grown. We didn’t make it all the way because it was to thick and had just rained so we turned around at mile 3. The trail is beautiful and I would recommend this trail.

So hard but worth! Definitely recommend.

Amazing trail. Intense boulders but worth it!

Really nice hike to get the dogs out on and beautiful scenery. Hand tram was fun and a definite good workout for the shoulders and back.

So intense and so beautiful!!!!! What a workout!!!

This was a steep hike, but definitely worth the cardio workout! The rock formations and views from the top were unbelievable! There is some opportunity to do some rock scaling to truly take in the scenery from the pinnacle. Definitely recommend bringing bug spray for the hike on the way down (at least during the summer).

This is a simple hike/ walk in the forest with a fun tram to check out!
Bring bear spray just Incase AND bug spray

Local favorite for a reason! If you are not physically active daily then it's a tough hike but the trail is very clear, well maintained, a d heavily trafficked so an excellent trail to get in better shape. If you are questioning whether or not to try for the summit see how you do in the first mile up Perseverance. If that section is difficult, once you turn on to Mt Juneau it gets much harder. You can always enjoy a much easier and still very beautiful hike to Gold Creek. That being said, the summit is very rewarding and worth planning on hanging out for an hour or more. also worth hiking further down the ridge. I only go on Sunny days as the trail can be muddy and slick when rainy and it's a narrow trail. Would not recommend for people with heights issues! Mt Roberts Trail is less exposed and does not have the dramatic drops so probably much easier to start with and an easier hike up.

Very well maintained trail. The views are pretty nice.

Easy hike with great views! High traffic in July with people and dogs. Not too much of a line at the hand tram but worth the wait. Lots of fun!
